Title: Are Hotdog Buns Still Forbidden?
Post by: Hollis Increase on April 08, 2012, 10:48:05 PM
Traditionally, keeping Discordian meant observing the dietary commandments of The Principia Discordia.  Specifically no hotdog buns.  Is this dietary rule still practised?

Did you miss the part where a Discordian is forbidden to believe everything he reads?

I'm not exactly what one would call an orthodoxed Discordian. You can't eat a delishus bacon-wrapped Crif Dog without a bun and I feel it's much more important to partake of a couple those with reckless abandon.

I practice this religiously.  Though, as it turns out, hotdog buns become vastly unnecessary when one has chosen to not consume hot dogs.  Granted hotdog buns do make great vessels for a great many foods....

Principia scholars suggest that the ban from hot dog buns arises not out of scorn for dietary restrictions of other religions but true distaste for the state of hot dog consumption in society on the part of Mal2.  An ongoing debate surrounds that line, one of the many contradictory and vague Discordian tenets.  It is theorized that one side notes a lack of creativity in the time the work was written when it comes to hot dogs as a food, their dressing limited to classic mustard, relish, and ketchup.  The hot dog bun is generally an enriched white flour good that adds little flavor or creative capability to the act of eating a hot dog.  Mal2 was far ahead of his time in noting that a sturdier bun, such as that used to contain sub sandwiches, or even grinders or hoagies, allowed for greater addition of toppings for the classic hot dog.

Some go so far as to believe Mal2 was actually an adherent to the revolutionary hot dog movement of his time, a rather unknown collective made up of hot dog enthusiasts ranging from the most well known chefs to street corner vendors looking for the next step.  Julia Child was also believed to be a part of this.  If that's the case, it's actually amazing the impact that he had on the world of hot dogs.  While the classic hot dog is still our cultural archetype for the food, many a specialty store are serving them on sturdier buns with toppings unfathomable in his day.  I've even read of places which split the dog in half and then grill the inside, which is mind boggling even for my modern standards of hot dogs.

Still, a fervent debate rages over whether or not Mal2 was indeed making a commentary on the state of food in the nation, a timely remark well before such thinking became prevalent and necessary for our continued survival.  Historically flour was eaten by peasants and common people in its whole grain form, healthier but less decadent than the white flour we see so often today.  White flour was expensive and only affordable by nobility and royalty.  With the advent of new techniques white flour became the standard in bread making, thus robbing many a people of the nutrition found in its whole wheat counterpart.  "Enriching" white flour with vitamins to make it healthier has done little to mimic the benefits of naturally occurring wheat flour nutrients.  Mal2, being the prescient mind he was, saw this as the conspiracy of depriving the masses of much vitamins for healthy minds on the part of those in power seeking to more easily manipulate them.  Rather than complicate his statement with the proclamation to not eat any white flour based products or to consume only whole wheat, he decided in his wisdom to disavow only a part, to offer only a hint of what more lie beneath the surface - much like the Principia Discordia itself.

Yet others think it's total bullshit.

I sont often eat hot dogs in buns because hot dog buns come in an eight pack while hot dogs come in a twelve. Im not going to eat enough hot dogs in buns before the expiration date to make that even out for one purchase.

Not eating hot dogs means no buns.

I used to eat them...I liked chili dogs. But the hot dog buns held together about as good as a wet paper sack so I started using sub rolls.

They're pretty good actually.  I rarely eat hot dogs because as a general rule I think they are fairly disgusting.  However, I can deal with a turkey dog.  You have to get a decent brand though, otherwise they can be pretty horrid.

I observe the prohibition in general, but cave in to temptation every time I get an opportunity to eat a hot dog, so I can feel guilty about it afterwards.  People who were raised Catholic need the guilt in order to metabolize anything trickier than a simple sugar.

Mac & Cheese (Kraft Dinner? What?) and Hot dogs is like a staple food for anyone under the age of 8 here in the US. I'm kind of a nutrition weirdo and I even feed it to MY kid. Since the age of four, Lex has been able to say "Ha-gah" and all the sudden, POOF! Awayyyy go those well-balanced, local-grown ingredients into the fridge and out comes a stick of butter, 1/4 cup of milk, a package of Hebrew National Beef dogs and a box containing elbow pasta and a pack of what can only be described as dehydrated glowstick goo. This box will serve as both a maraca and object of wonderment for approximately 6 minutes until the water boils.

Me too. I'm the healthy-eatinest chick around town; I'm all about whole foods from scratch. I make my own salmon jerky and whole-grain bread. But damned if there isn't always a box of mac & cheese (OK, so it's usually Annie's Organic) and a pack of nasty cheap processed armits and anus in the house. LO called them "ga gogs" for years. "Can I have a ga gog?" "Sure honey. Warm or cold?" (because there's nothing like a refreshing, ice-cold hot dog on a summer day. My mom wouldn't let me eat them cold because back then there was still a possibility that something might still be alive in them. Not anymore!)

Quote from: navkat on April 25, 2012, 12:28:02 PMout comes a stick of butter, 1/4 cup of milk, a package of Hebrew National Beef dogs and a box containing elbow pasta and a pack of what can only be described as dehydrated glowstick goo. This box will serve as both a maraca and object of wonderment for approximately 6 minutes until the water boils.

And then you sneeze on it?

ALso that pasta did not have elbows. Not even armpits.

Hot dogs and mac & cheese are disgusting. They also taste awesome. I don't have them together though. At least not anymore.

This however, I have always considered an abomination before the Lord:

But all the gristle is thoroughly processed so what you're left with is a vaguely meat-tasting, formed blob of cornstarch-and-gristle-goo that has a peculiar "bite."

I would never feed these to a CHILD but I'm reasonably certain that if I don't eat em too often, soylent mystery animal(s) can't hurt me any more than a wild night of drinkin and druggin.

I have a peculiar way of preparing ramen noodles:
1. cook noodles, setting flavour packette aside
2. drain almost all the water out of noodles and dump them in a large eating bowl.
3. add flavor packet and a couple tablespoons of sour cream. Stir. Eat.

I've always had a weird aversion to them. I'll eat hot dogs sometimes even though I know they're all by-producty, but corn dogs somehow always seemed....even more fake (or something) than regular hot dogs. I don't know. My boyfriend looked at me like I had five heads when I told him I'd never had one

Traditionally, keeping Discordian meant observing the dietary commandments of The Principia Discordia.  Specifically no hotdog buns.  Is this dietary rule still practised?

Did you miss the part where a Discordian is forbidden to believe everything he reads?

Also, there's another part of the book that says that they're mandatory*

*As part of a fully garnished hotdog every friday. Perferably this should be increased to multiple fully garnished hotdogs on fridays during lent. You should also eat as many hotdog buns as possible during passover, a bacon double cheeseburger on yom-kippur, and as much black pudding** as you can eat for lunch (preferably at high noon) every day during ramadan. These last four rules aren't in the book, but they're just common sense.

I practice this religiously.  Though, as it turns out, hotdog buns become vastly unnecessary when one has chosen to not consume hot dogs.  Granted hotdog buns do make great vessels for a great many foods....
Well if one is to embrace orthodox Erisian piety woke heartedly, the eating of a bun-clad wiener on Friday cannot be overlooked. Whether one eats buns on other days is rarely noticed. To eat only hot dog buns would be, IMO, a transcendent act of heterodox devotion to Our Lady Of Discord. There is no harm in eating oblong buns not specifically made - yet nonetheless suitable enough - to wrap around your repurposed pigs lips, eyelids and etc. Doing so conspicuously of course may come across as overly self important.

The only people who didn't eat the buns were those glutun free freaks. Though it is possible that they are just using that as cover.

Around 200 hot dog buns sold a day. But those could just be Americans and not discordians. No one really mentioned it, but the guy who tipped me with a shoe probably was one.

Oddly enough the defac here serves hot-dogs every Friday. And half price dogs are on Friday.

plus if you go to any fast food place or street food carts. bring a loaf of bread with you just incase you get a hotdog, then you can properly throw the hotdog bun towards any unsuspecting customer and wrap the hotdog with a slice of bread.

warning: this may cause chaos so wear protection.

but if you want to be cool about it, carefully take the hotdog bun away from the hotdog, place the hotdog bun gently inbetween a nearby car's windshield wiper. surround the hotdog with your convieniately prepared bread, eat the hotdog while waiting for the car's owner. make it a race to see if you can finish the hotdog before the driver returns. if successful. :D then stand near the door with arms crossed and a Beethoven angry expression on your face for how ever long it takes them to get to their car. Ask them (in exact words... no variations.) "Did you see Eris today?"

This can be asked before or after they notice the hotdog bun inbetween their windshield wiper...
if done before, simply wait for them to notice the said hotdog bun and state in a pleasant japanese animation moe school girl tone, "That's a sign from Eris." inquire them to eat the hotdog bun.

if done after, purposefully state the above statement of five words. this will provide the next option. State in a very monotonous and unentuesiastic tone, "She left you a present."

now if they do not believe this. aptly perform the turkey curse, then immediately run away. i suggest you wear some really powerful light up shoes this way if they happen to look at your feet they will end up blind and decide it was probably a bad idea to chase you.

:D and this is how you can avoid eating a hotdog bun. :D

I observe the prohibition in general, but cave in to temptation every time I get an opportunity to eat a hot dog, so I can feel guilty about it afterwards.  People who were raised Catholic need the guilt in order to metabolize anything trickier than a simple sugar.

As a former Catholic I can verify such statements. However, I feel the need to add that all things do require a certain amount of balance in order to be satiated. While I typically avoid such feelings, upon certain occasions where I wish to be complacent, I will eat a microwaved hotdog on Friday. Just the frank, perhaps with mustard but never a bun.
