ITEM! The Yankee & Cowboy War
Conspiracies from Dallas to Watergate and Beyond
by Carl Oglesby

Available as a PDF from Archive.org!

An oft cited fav of RAW's, which reads almost like an Illuminatus! appendix, describes a secret history of conflict between Northeastern and Southwestern power elites.

It plays almost like a "previously in the History of the United States" recap / recontextualization of our contemporary political strife. There are so many plot lines & trends that Oglesby identifies back in 1976 that we have now seen come to actual fruition, that there is a slightly eerie quality to his more paranoid ruminations. (Defactualization -> TechnoFascism)

Oglesby comes across as arguing in good faith about the cracks in the official stories of United States history, though perhaps with a pronounced grudge against the establishment, which maybe tints his perception and pushes him towards favoring any explanation other than those officially provided by the government.

Given the content of his investigative reports, this preference is perfectly understandable, admirable even, but with current events demonstrating the logical conclusion of oppositional defiance as an epistemological strategy, it's hard not to second guess his methodology.

Also, I find engaging with this type of material interesting, but must admit that I lack the scholarship to do so meaningfully.

One of the most compelling parts of the book were lengthy transcripts of conversations between Jack Ruby and Justice Roberts during the Warren Commission. From his own words, Jack Ruby seemed to be insinuating that he was ensnared in a vast web of conspiracy, for which Oglesby provides compelling and convincing contextual support, But! I don't really have any basis to critically analyze Oglesby's narrative. It might as well be fan fiction for all I actually know.

Though I do now have a new fav JFK theory! Oglesby suggests that some of the funny business that arrises within the investigation stems from Justice Roberts assuming that Russia was the real culprit behind the assassination of JFK, and that if that were to be discovered, a nuclear world war would be the inevitable result. So given the choice between the truth ending the world, and a lie preserving it, he chose the lie of the lone gunman. Ignoring any other possibilities, just to be on the safe side.

As history, I would assume this is probably very suspect, but as a story, it's a pretty good one!

I'm particularly interested in the alt political dichotomy Oglesby outlines:
Old Money Vs. New Money
East Coast Monopolist Vs. Western Tycoon Entrepreneur

Those specific lines have probably blurred a bit, but I can def dig the general idea of political divisions amongst the ruling class having much less to do with ideology, and way more to do with conflicting business interests.

Maybe!

Literate Chaotic / Awesome Comics Supreme!
« on: June 24, 2021, 07:26:02 pm »
I absolutely can not believe how unfathomably GOOD & FUN Alan Moore's Supreme comics are!

I knew AM went to work for Rob Liefeld's Awesome Comics for a while in the early 90's, but kind of assumed it was a half-assed, phoned in gimmick, like when Moore, Gaiman, and Morrison wrote for Todd McFarlane. (I recently tried to read GM's issues of SPAWN, and no thank you, please!)

But this is the real deal! He plays with the genuine 90's Image aesthetic as a framing device for a Mort Weisinger style Superman pastiche. It's a truly wild coincidentia oppositorum.  And to think that Liefeld was paying Moore 10K per script is a wonderful poetic justice!

I guess AM & RL eventually had a falling out, and Moore rebooted his Supreme ideas as Tom Strong, Promethea, et al, with Jim Lee/WildStorm instead, creating the truly wonderful America's Best Comics imprint.

ABC is a way more polished & prestigious version of what Moore did with Liefeld, and ultimately those comics are maybe the best I've ever read, but there's something super special about these down & dirty Awesome Comics!

I found this cool blog dedicated to this weird corner of comics history: http://forgottenawesome.blogspot.com/

Between Supreme & Tom Strong it's kind of impossible to reconcile the popular conception of Moore as this cranky neophobe what hates superheroes.
AM writes the most joyous & imaginative sci-fi vision of super humanity I've ever seen.  :fnord: :fnord: :fnord:

WHAT THE WHAT?
A Skeleton Key to LUX NATURA

When I was 23, being already an insufferable such & such, I scrawled 3 sevens and an inscrutable ideogram on the back of my jean jacket. There was no because, but there were FAQs!

I wd legit get stopped on the street:
“What does that symbol mean?”
But of course IDK what it means!

I was working at Baker Jeep Eagle at the time, primarily filing service reports, trying to decipher my brother’s handwritten alphanumeric VIN codes, and came upon this alien hieroglyphic on the paperwork for an oil change on a ’95 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Theoretically it’s supposed to be a letter or number, but which one is a mystery I was entirely unable to solve. So whatever all that means is what the symbol means I suppose!

This comic was originally done as an “Illumination Ritual” assignment, while I was studying Chaos Magick with Peter J. Carroll back in like 2006. My thought being, and remaining, that magick is best used within the realm of art/fiction  :fnord: :fnord: :fnord:

damn that hits hard, important to tell the all too real situations too

Thanks for reading, Faust!

An earlier version of this still had the real swears in it, rather than this $#!+, and one of those lines in particular was too much for me.

It was also originally about Ms. Pac-Man. The story popped into my head fully formed in the Spring of 2002. I got out of bed at 2 AM to write it all down.
It's been through several iterations over the last almost 20 years, but I think this one did the trick  :fnord: :fnord: :fnord:
