Fuck Discordianism.

Dead serious.
I'm out.
I'm tired of this really real bullshit.

My new religion is "Broke Pinkgenius."
I wanna be a Subgenius, but I don't have 30 dollars.

I'm the only motherfucker in the religion, so I know more about it than every single one of you shit-heads.

At one point, as a Discordian pope, I could do that. I could excommunicate everyone and make it my own religion. Somehow though, the Really Reals, and Pinealists, and Art Majors, took that away from me.

Eat my shit.
I am God.

now THAT is the :potd:

Quote from: Ratatosk on July 20, 2007, 12:44:18 AMKaienne,

Don't worry, some of the old farts around here get grumpy when they haven't had a fnordling to chew on for awhile.

hey

i dunno about the others, but i only flame when faced with someone who seems oblivious to any sort of regular critique.

does that make me a grumpy old fart whose posts you advise people not to worry about?

Dunno... why do you feel the need to flame someone who is oblivious to your critique? Does your opinion seem that important to you? More interestingly, why should your critique be considered useful by someone else? Hell, you're a pseudonym on a Discordian message board, why would anyone consider a critique from such a source to be useful?

Do you believe that Kaienne is wrong? Do you believe that you have the true information to correct him/her/it? So what if she/he/it (still haven't quite figured it out) has only started to scratch the surface of ideas many of us have already prodded? When I first became a Discordian, I was excited about pineal glands and 42 and 23 and 5, then I learned (through my own research, not through the lame flames of other Discordians) what seems to be the key behind some of those ideas.

Who the hell cares if Kaienne thinks that (what is the contraction for She/He/It...) she-he-it will write a book called 42 and it will contain THE secrets of Life? Does that make your life less interesting for you (if so, I wonder who really has the problem)? Good Flames rarely improve the behavior of anyone, they rarely see a different concept or have their perceptions modified by it, and honestly, what's been posted here, seems to me, pathetic excuses for "flames" .  I mean the lack of creativity, the the repetitious manner of the content... its enough to make the baby Eris cry a little bit.

Sometimes flames can be appropriate. I think the thread "BIP - Just Call Me Nigger To My Face" fits the bill quite nicely. The idiot tried to force his lame ideas on us, and he got what he deserved. Kaienne just posted a dumb idea that many of us have heard before (along with the dumb "Ideal Discordian" and "DMT is IN YOU"! stuff). However, that's the same sort of thing  many Discordians have gone through... to flame someone for being at the beginning of the path seems rather pathetic to me.

So many here seem to have an aversion to the memes of Discordianism. Not just adverse, but downright hostile. I love the trappings of classic Discordianism. They're tribal memes and I'm proud to be part of that tribe of philosophers and madmen. That doesn't mean that I MUST use them, or that I think they hold the secrets to the universe (in a specific sense), but I sure as hell don't mind the kids in the tribe getting excited. I feel no more animosity toward Kaienne, than I do toward the little kid that thinks Santa is real. They'll both learn in their own time.

Since I started hanging out here, I've noticed this tendency for flamefests to appear whenever some poor n00b hits one of the old Standards. I have to wonder how much people may see themselves and if self-loathing might be behind such a reaction.

So yes, flames about how lame someone is for using the Discordian tribal memes, seems to me an indicator that someone has grown old and crotchety as a Discordian. An almost Scrooge or Grinch-like reaction to the wonder and innocence of the youth of our Tribe... or not, your mileage may vary and past performance is not indicative of future results. This post is Void where prohibited.

Or Kill Me / Re: e-prime sucks and so do you.

Yeah i mean i'm not saying i agree with it, just from what i've read of korzybski and e-prime and general semantics, it seems like that was his goal. I agree with you, i only use e-prime in person to person discussion...

Okay, i can agree with you on that point. I just didn't agree with the example you used because it was taking things to an extreme. I just find E-Prime to be a helpful way for me to remind myself that "the map is not the territory". As a side note, it's funny that that Korzybski said that, and that RAW liked that quote so much, even though it's obviously not spoke in e-prime...

I think Korzybski wanted E-prime to be used in science because it could serve as a reminder that all the results one got from scientific research were based on the tools and equipment and models used to gain the results, and i don't believe he was too worried about people appearing unsure in their conclusions because he WANTED people to be unsure, to doubt their models, to constantly question their reality grids, etc.

It should not read like, "It seems as though 5 individuals may have possibly been randomly chosen to recieve treatment, which from my subjective opinion may have been matched with control individuals with what looked like to me to be about the same weight and conditions", or " From what was subjectively assumed, 42.3% looked like they grew over half an inch over 3 days, from my reconing."

from what i understand of e-prime, it wasn't meant to be taken to that extreme. If you pick 5 people for an experiment, for all intents and purposes you have to assume that it's an objective truth. You're stretching its use.  At its core, e-prime is english without the word 'to be'

Quote
5 individuals were randomly chosen to recieve treatment, matched with 5 control individuals with weight and condition within one unit of each other

The e-prime equivalent of that could be "We randomly selected 5 individuals to recieve treatment, and matched them with 5 control individuals with measured weight and condition within one unit of each other" or something to that effect.

I don't know much about the etiquitte of writing scientific papers, although i remember my physics teacher in high school telling me to refrain from saying "we did this... we did that" in lab reports. not sure if this holds true as a general rule of thumb in the real scientific community as well, but i'm sure if it does there is another acceptable translation of that sentence into e-prime that would work.

Either way, i speak in e-prime when i know i'm talking about a subjective topic... Music, Books, TV, personal interests, opinions, talking about another person's mood, etc. I don't do it consciously, it just seems to have developed as a habit over the past few years. I don't use it to say "I'm going to the store" because that would be ridiculous.

i'm assuming all the content is the same so i didn't read it, just skimmed through it for the meme-bombs and the new layout, which i think is significantly better. it's a lot more appealing than the last version.

i saw it and i couldn't stand it. It just seemed like a lot of weird product placement and stupid jokes. It had a good concept but i think it was taken to too much of an extreme.

that'd be nice, i read part of it but lost it due to my computer getting a bad case of the HIV, and i haven't been able to find it since.

In many ways, I have the same feelings for the Principia as I do Illuminatus!.

Both created long-lasting bubbles in my pineal gland which has caused infinite merry spirals and subspirals in my life.

But in rereading Illuminatus, I can't help but feel it's a little outdated. The details of the revolution that Wilson talked about involved things like white men sleeping with black women. His characters thought that was pretty kinky. Hippies learning to sympathize with cops. etc.

I grew up with parents who grew up in the 60s (though were not hippies). Peace love and understanding were in the background of my childhood, so Wilson & Shea's revolution doesn't seem that shocking to me as it might have on their original audience.

Then the Principia -- same thing. I feel like the core "religion disguised as a joke / joke disguised as a religion" was probably very fresh in the 60s, but we're living in the era of subgenii, pastafarians, last tuesdayists, cthulhu cults, and all sorts of other malarky. If Discordia is going to bloom in the coming decades, it needs a fresh coat of paint.

Are we the ones who will give it that? It would be kind of egotistical to think so, and probably not. But there are some memetic masterminds here, and I feel that the snowball which becomes an avalanche could very well be thrown here on this forum.

So whether we "rewrite the PD" or masturbate about the black iron prison or just post retarded MS Paint pictures, I think this is the place to be.

okay i jumped into this thread late but feel the need to applaud this post for being more full of win than anything i've read this week.

interestingly enough, i just read the stranger last week based on the recommendation of a random drunk i met at the beach. it was a fantastic read and i just got some more camus today... The Myth of Sisyphus and The Fall. i started reading through The Myth of Sisyphus but i was half falling asleep and didn't reallize that i went about 30 pages reading with absolutely no comprehension of what he was saying, i'm having a hard time getting through it for some reason.

Sorry, man.  I really wish I could get in the cave with you and beat on a hollow log to keep the evil spirits away, but it's just not my bag, ya know?

wouldn't you say there's a difference between "beating on a hollow log to keep the evil spirits away" and  using "a collection of arbitrary symbols overlaid upon a theoretical structure & employed for purposes of interpretation with regards to the future or for gaining alternative perspective/insight in connection with a present situation" ?  no madjuickalness required there.

Techmology and Scientism / Re: virtual reality universes

i did some more reading about it and talking to a friend that played it and evidently 99% of the game is sex-starved supernerds paying for virtual lapdances.

then again i suppose that's how the internet can appear sometimes. i'm sure there's some decent stuff on there if you know where to look.  seems kinda goofy though.
