Title: ITT: You give me terrible ideas for waffles
Post by: Q. G. Pennyworth on April 30, 2013, 04:14:29 AM
Tomorrow waffle night will be upon me again. Previous waffle nights have featured such fare as:

     * Waffled chicken patties (cooked chicken + breadcrumbs + egg)
     * Waffled black bean burgers (black bean burger recipe, waffled)
     * Waffled hash browns
     * Womlettes
     * Waffled burgers (not interested in doing that again, too messy)
     * Waffle biscuits
     * Radish waffle (smells terrible cooking)
     * Avocado and sundried tomato waffle

So, what horrors should I unleash this time? No fish, no shellfish, and nothing crazy expensive, please.

Another veggie burger recipe - generally sauteed in olive oil but I'm curious if it waffles, so if you do it let me know what happens:

2 tablespoons ground pecans or cashews (or both)
3/4 cups seasoned (or plain) bread crumbs
1/2 small onion (minced)
1 clove garlic (minced)
½ red or orange sweet bell pepper
1/4 cup minced mushrooms
1 or 2 hot chilis
hoisin sauce to taste
½ cup cooked rice (white, brown, wild, whatever you like)
salt & black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons potato flakes or 1 egg to bind

Pizza waffle. Either use the waffle as the base for a pizza or mix the pre-cooked meat into the batter and top with sauce and cheese.

Okay, preliminary plan for tonight:
     - Regular waffles with breakfast sausage or bacon (for boring people)
     - Roasted pepper waffles topped with grilled peppers, onions, and sausage
     - Pizza waffles: tomato paste, parmesan cheese, and chopped pepperoni chunks in batter, topped with melted italian cheese blend
     - Falafelwaffles: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/My-Favorite-Falafel-231755
     - Fruit and nut waffles: dried mixed fruit with chopped walnuts, topped with apricot jam

Melt jolly ranchers, use as syrup.

Coat in unused coffee grounds and A-1 sauce, constrain with toothpicks and string, boil for 2 hours.

When they came out of the fridge it was just a solid, gelatinous mass with small orange bits crying out for freedom or death.

Masa preparada for tamales. If the store carries frozen pig heads, they probably carry that. It's not frozen though, just refreigerated.

I imagine pureeing a fruit jelly with a matching fruit liquor and lots of sugar might work.

Quinoa is actually delicious and I like it a lot. I don't buy it anymore though, because eight bucks a pound for GRAIN is stupid. I've been cooking with millet and teff instead, I don't like either of them quite as much but they're good.

Nine of the waffle night attendees did not know that waffle night is not for normal waffles. Needless to say, their tears were delicious.

I was trying to come with something hideous, then I came up with something AMAZING.

Vindaloo waffles.

Hold on... I can see that.

Which leads me to kimchee chicken waffles with schiracca.

Just stopped by the store, no plain quinoa so I guess I'm cooking up the instant garlic stuff and using that. Maybe a couple cloves of garlic mixed in, because too much is not a thing.

Also on the menu: honey apricot walnut waffles.

There's such a thing as instant garlic quinoa?

I love these recent "more exotic" waffle suggestions. I think you need to do it. For your guests.

I think you should use whiskey instead of water or milk to make the waffle batter. Waffles that get you drunk.
The alcohol would cook off.
...Would suggest creation of an alcoholic syrup blend for the sweet waffles.

I imagine pureeing a fruit jelly with a matching fruit liquor and lots of sugar might work.

No it wouldn't. Waffle irons don't get hot enough for long enough. Alcohol is harder to cook off than people think it is.
Really?
...Alcohol isn't my fave anyway.
...Something I've been meaning to figure out how to make are chocolate rum balls, and those do, in fact, get you drunk.

Sure it's been done before, but it occurred to me that waffles + syrup + ice cream + blender = awesome waffle milkshake. Maybe blend separate so that the waffles aren't liquified, just waffle chunks. Garnish with slice of waffle.

I've had waffles on the brain for a while.

Blueberry and Blue Waffles
Gotta think about ratios, might use this as a topper: http://www.food.com/recipe/blueberry-blue-cheese-dip-130573

The Green Stuff
Spinach is a must, maybe kale and mustard greens? Top it with herby butter

The "A" Waffle
Avocado, asparagus, artichoke, topped with arugula

The Bee's Knees
Honeycomb, brie and chopped walnut, garnish with edible flowers of some kind

The Fat American
Jalapeno, bacon, cheddar, top with onion strings and ranch or bbq

The "B" Waffle
Brussels sprouts, bacon, and butternut squash. Pre-cook em' in a pan with a little oil and pepper, puree some for inside the waffle and top with the remaining chunks.

Entirely Too Herby
Fresh basil, rosemary, thyme, sage, chives, and whatever else you can get your hands on. Top with herby butter.

The New England Fall
Chopped pieces of maple candy, small pre-cooked apple pieces, top with apple butter and real maple syrup. (maybe leave out the apple chunks?)

Food Trend Bingo
Five trendy food items chosen at random (based on availability). Items may include: greek yogurt, kale, pomegranate, goji berries, acai berries, quinoa, chia seeds, wheat grass, coconut oil, etc.
