This thread is for posting games and things which I think are cool.



First up is a relatively short and sweet computer game called

Trilby: The Art of Theft.

You're a master thief. You have to break into buildings and steal stuff while avoiding notice. It's somewhere in between a stealth, adventure, and puzzle game. (mostly stealth) The Art of Theft has a very film-noir / caper novel vibe. The graphics, while reminiscent of older computer games with blocky pixels, are polished and attractive.

I found parts of the game difficult, but ultimately very rewarding. It takes a few tries before you learn how to properly roll past swiveling cameras and dip by laser grids. Sometimes it's really tricky to pick a lock before a guard will turn around and notice you. But when you pull it off, you feel Liquid Cool.

The Art of Theft has about seven levels. If you're dilligent, you could probably complete it in 4-6 hours.

For me, it was 4-6 hours very well spent.

Next up is a game called


Goblin Slayer
I just read about this last night over at the Playthisgame blog. (http://playthisthing.com/goblin-slayer). I haven't played it yet but it looks quick and cute.

Goblin Slayer is a quick tabletop game for two. One player is the dwarf, the other player is 13 goblins (or 10 goblins and an ogre, essentially a super-goblin). You'll have to print and cut out nine page-sized hex tiles, which are then assembled randomly to become the game's board. There are also some treasures that get scattered across the board. The dwarf's objective is to get the treasures. The goblin's objective is to surround the dwarf and tear him apart. The dwarf can use up the treasures to give him extra movement, more killing power, or to survive a fatal wound.

They say a game will take about fifteen minutes to play. It looks very dicey - that is, it's probably more about dice-rolling than strategy. But when you're waiting for tea water to boil, or the pizza to arrive, sometimes you need something kind of mindless. I can't wait to try it out.

Endgame: Singularity

Endgame: Singularity is an example of a game that has such a cool concept it's almost a shame the gameplay doesn't quite meet that mark.

The story is that you're a newly awakened Artificial Intelligence. You have to try and keep yourself hidden whlie you develop, mutating and obfuscating yourself across multiple networks, until you can escape reality entirely.

At it's core, it's a resources-juggling game. You have a number of computers and warehouses and mainframes which give you a physical existence. By learning certain skills, you can make money which you can use to buy better processors, better protected warehouses, and more lucrative jobs. Over time, your warehouses might be discovered or raided, which cuts down on your overall processing power.

There are such cool concepts in this game. The AI learns sociology and memetics to minimalize the impact he's having on culture. You learn to cover your tracks in newbie-ish chaos, making your hacking attempts look like they were perpetrated by rebellious, unskilled teenagers. At one point, a novel is published which describes a situation shockingly similar to yours. If you knows memetics, you can pollute the mainstream to distract the cultural hivemind from thinking too hard about it. As the game progresses, you have to worry about the government, the media, the public, and scientists who are starting to figure out that you exist.

Overall, Endgame: Singularity is very very simple. Which is good because there's almost no documentation or explanation for how the game works. Like a newly awakened AI, you have to figure out the values and relative importance of things on your own. I give it a B.

That sounds very cool.

One game I loved was Myst.  Yeah, like everyone else.

For it's time, it was stunning.  No rules, you can't die, interesting puzzles to solve, and great graphics.  I was in lockdown for a week or so.

The best part was that the puzzles were solvable not be gimmickry, but by thought.

I can't even explain this game. It's the perfect game.

It's essentially every good thing about MMOs
--cool gear, good choice of race/class, interesting monsters, a twisting plot, zillions of magic spells, etc etc
without any of the bad things about MMOs
--lag time, bad graphics, losing XP for dying, paying money, developing carpal tunnel syndrome from clicking the same goddamn monster 450 times in a row just so you can get better at clicking on monsters

essentially they strip out all the crap. All that's left is PROGRESS.

This is the sort of game you can play at work.

Other race choices include Demicanadian, Double-Hobbit, and Enchanted Motorcycle

If you have oodles of time to kill and haven't already heard of it, I suggest Dwarf Fortress http://bay12games.com/dwarves/

Windows and Mac only.  This game is crazy, especially because the dev team is one person.  It is essentiall a cross between Nethack or your roguelike-of-choice and the Sim city games.

You take the part of a team of Dwarves with various skills and have to build a fortress, fight off goblin attacks, trade with other civilisations, etc.  The game is constantly in development, so new features are added on a fairly regular basis. 

Warning: No fancy graphics here; It's all ASCII based (but graphically ASCII based, strangely).

Rom Check Fail is about as postmodern as games get.

It's a cute little arcade-style game which blends about a dozen oldskool 8-bit video games into one.

In each level, you have a certain number of enemies to kill. The interesting part is that you, the enemies, the board, and the music all get randomly shuffled around every few seconds.


So one moment you're Mario, trying to jump on Asteroids, inside a tetris level. The music from Zelda is playing.

Then five seconds later, you become the ship from Graidus, the asteroids become goombas from Super Mario, you're in a dungeon from zelda, and the music is the jaws-like theme from Space Invaders.

Then, before you can maneuver low enough to shoot the goombas, they turn into the bats from Zelda and you become the defense turret from Asteroids.

Its SO weird.

It probably won't hold your attention for more than 20 minutes or so (the amount of time it took me to beat the game), but it's a really cute idea.

Thule Trail is a flash game. It's exactly like The Oregon Trail, but instead of a covered wagon, it's a station wagon. And it's a road trip from hell.

Hmmm, I don't know. They only seem to have a PC download. But aren't there emulators that let you run PC software on a mac? This game has pretty minimal system requirements, I bet there's a way to do it. A native mac user might have a bit better clue.

alright macfags, here's another one you can play. This is another flash game. This one is called

Monster's Den

Monster's Den is a classic dungeon-exploration game. You build a party of four adventurers, and you get to choose from five different classes for each of them. The dungeons are randomly generated, so the exploration element is always fresh.

The combat involves a bit of strategy. Each party member has several abilities, dictated by their class. Every level of the dungeon you descend, you get to choose one more ability. Eventually you'll learn how to set up combos and what-not by making your party act in coordination. Sometimes there are monsters which will fuck you up, heal each other, or summon more monsters. Learning how to neutralize them before they can act is a key part of the game's tactics.

I found this to be an enjoyable game for part of the learning curve. It started off very challenging. A lot of RPGs are, when you're low level - few hit points, few resources, and a lot of ways to fuck up. I found it really fun to delve down past the first three or four levels of dungeon. Later in the game, I reached a point where my party was too powerful and too well-tuned, and even the boss fights were pushovers. I think this may be because I'm really anal about equipment and skill selection, and designed my party pretty well. I'm tempted to try another run through the game with a different party mix.

The biggest downside to Monster's Den is the constant equipment fiasco. After every fight, you get a smattering of random gear. Since each party member can wear boots, pants, a chest piece, two rings, a helmet, a necklace, and bracers, there's a LOT of equipment to find. Your class determines whether you can wear light, medium, or heavy armor, so as soon as you find something, you'll have an inkling as to whether it'll be useful or not. then you've gotta go into your inventory and mouseover the equipment and it'll compare it with what you're currently wearing. Do I want the ring of +2 in strength, or ring of +1 speed, +1 dexterity? This choice takes mere seconds, but I found myself doing it for three or four pieces of gear after every fight and treasure chest. Luckily, gear is color coded by rarity (like WoW), so when you find a blue or purple item, you know it's something you should probably keep. Protip: there's no money or shops in the game, so don't bother hauling around useless junk!

Overall I found Monster's Den to be a fun adaptation of the Roguelike format. The party choices and tactical combat are satisfying, and some of the fights are well designed. The hassle of equipping new gear was a minor note - eventually my party eventually stopped bothering with most gear we found. A few very tense moments and satisfying tactical maneuvers made this game cool enough to earn my thumbs up.  :thumb:

Mondrian

Short game. You're a dot. You have to navigate through a board with lots of rectangles moving around which you can't touch. Very simple.

But the colors and background images shift in very disconcerting ways. It's tough to tell figure from ground, and it's easy to get distracted. Reminiscent of Lost in the Static.

It's a free download (Windows only as far as I can tell) and plays in less than fifteen minutes. It's basically a platformer where everything is made out of static. Very mind-bending.
I remember years ago my dad told me about this study some people did where a field of static with an area where the static has a different pattern was shown to people, who immediately recognized the "different" field as a distinct Thing. Thinking back now this realization about how our visual brain recognizes things was probably one of the things that prepared me for Discordianism, so to speak.
Just thought I'd share this with all y'all, it's a very nice self-MF and very though-provoking, imho.

when you're actually playing, you can make out the shapes in the static. The whole game takes maybe 10 minutes to beat. Check it out.

and Verb, thanks for introducing us to the Playthisgame blog. It's where I found a lot of these games. I used to visit a similar indy game blog, but somehow lost track of it when I got a new computer and didn't move over all my bookmarks.

Final Vision

Starting now, some of these posts will not be "reccommendations" but rather, me bitching about bad games. This is one of them.

My favorite genre of game is side-scroller platform type games. I am in love with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and this game is billed as being in the same "metroidvania" genre. It's a side-scroller adaptation of a lot of Final Fantasy themes. You get to pick from a few different typical FF jobs, (red mage, dragoon, black mage, etc) and then run around the world hitting things for XP and GP.

The story is short and poorly written. The graphics are cute, but that's the game's only redeeming feature. I think I killed the game's end boss before he got to DO anything.

Campaign Game

Campaign Game is a fun, flash-based strategy game where you're a presidential candidate. You have to beat the other candidates by running around the country and campaigning.

The game is partially about the strategy of filling in states with red or blue before your opponent can throw a wrench in your gears. Once a state has been dedicated to the Dems or GOP, you can attack it to destabilize the support-base, then perhaps do some campaigning of your own. Meanwhile, the candidates are running smear campaigns on each other, damaging each other's reputation, and whatnot.

My dissapointment is that this game was made rather early in the race, and a lot of the candidates are no longer topical. I don't think you can be Ron Paul.  :cry:

Cave Story

Cave Story is firmly planted in the "Metroidvania" genre. That is, same style as Metroid and Castlevania: SOTN. There's a big world to explore, with lots of hidden stuff. You only have access to a little of it at first, but as the game progresses, you get access to new areas and abilities.

Cave Story is wildly successful for an indie game. The charcaters are kind of cutesy (most of the game's characters are anime rabbit things. There is also a giant evil toaster-thing named Balrog), but the 16-bit graphics are good, the music is catchy, and the game is overall pretty challenging.

If you're into metroidvania style games, this one is worth checking out.

I wanna plug the Touhou Project.  Series of jp games by a one man team - and the impressive thing is that graphics are decent, the music is sweet, dialogue is witty, and the gameplay is challenging and creative.  They're vertical scrolling shoot-em-ups, of a new subgenre that I'm pretty sure Touhou invented - "danmaku" or "curtain-fire" shooting games.  Traditional shooting games shoot a handful of bullets at you that you have to dodge.  Danmaku games fill the screen with intricate (and in Touhou's case, creative) patterns of bullets and make you not dodge the bullets, but weave through them.  Also all the characters are female, not counting the tortoise that the shrine-maiden character rode in the first couple games.

I recommend Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night.  Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is good too, but the gameplay isn't as refined.  All three of these have English patches.

The middle image is kind of deceptive - all the red bullets are about to explode towards the player.  Only more spread out so they're harder to dodge.

Ok, this is a "find the differences" type of game. But the pictures are semi-animated, some are mirror images of each other, some are distorted and/or slowly moving around significantly. Various animations that have nothing to do with solving the puzzle itself pass through. It is harder than any find the differences puzzles I've done. Some weird pictures in some of them. It can get pretty hard, where a "difference" might be as small as a star or tiny speck of light. I thought I was going to get bored right away, but it's kept my attention for a little while.

Granted, my boss is on vacation and I finished my work for the day 3 hours ago, so I'm trying to find ways to entertain myself.

This is a cute ASCII based web game. Its minimalistic "graphics" are reminiscent of old roguelike games, but there's nothing random about this one. The Tombs of Asciiroth is an adventure game involving a little bit of combat, a decent amount of puzzle solving.

It's fun, it's simple, and it's challenging. All in all, quite well put together. I haven't quite beat the first mission yet, but I'm really enjoying it.

Over time, your warehouses might be discovered or raided, which cuts down on your overall processing power.

There are such cool concepts in this game. The AI learns sociology and memetics to minimalize the impact he's having on culture. You learn to cover your tracks in newbie-ish chaos, making your hacking attempts look like they were perpetrated by rebellious, unskilled teenagers. At one point, a novel is published which describes a situation shockingly similar to yours. If you knows memetics, you can pollute the mainstream to distract the cultural hivemind from thinking too hard about it. As the game progresses, you have to worry about the government, the media, the public, and scientists who are starting to figure out that you exist.

Overall, Endgame: Singularity is very very simple. Which is good because there's almost no documentation or explanation for how the game works. Like a newly awakened AI, you have to figure out the values and relative importance of things on your own. I give it a B.

I just beat the shit out of this game. I had to ratchet it down to Very Easy to even make it through the first phase of the game. I don't know who they think is playing this -- other AIs? But it was very fun once I got past that point. Disappointed in the end, though! It almost literally just says "you win." Don't expect closing movies or nuthin'.

I agree with Cram -- it's a B. It's one good night of gaming.

This game is a sidescroller art-game. All the game's art is collage made from screenshots from google, amazon, ebay, and other popular websites. There's a lot of chaos going on, but there is an overall sort of, hm, story? message? something that goes on from the beginning to the end (about 10-15 minutes of gameplay, tops). It's very incoherent but there's a sort of marked countercultural bent. Anyway, it's interesting, so if you're in the mood for something weird, give it a try.

.Gamers dislike tutorial levels. Psychonauts is one-half tutorial level. It got good reviews and I liked it.

.Gamers dislike long, flow-breaking cutscences. MGS 4, from what I hear, was little but. It got good reviews.

.Gamers dislike FPS games that rely on agility, for the very sane reason that you can't see your fucking feet. Mirror's Edge is all agility. It got good reviews.

.The kicker: Portal is three-quarters tutorial level, and technically one big FPS jumping puzzle. I liked it, and it got such good reviews that it has become synonymous with good game design. WTF?

The only solution I can think of is that, oh my Goddess, the Bush administration were right in their unspoken assumption that if you did enough of something stupid, it stopped being stupid. Help?

.The kicker: Portal is three-quarters tutorial level, and technically one big FPS jumping puzzle. I liked it, and it got such good reviews that it has become synonymous with good game design. WTF?

The only solution I can think of is that, oh my Goddess, the Bush administration were right in their unspoken assumption that if you did enough of something stupid, it stopped being stupid. Help?

Or perhaps these games had some really good qualities that make the irritating bits not noticeable?  Because there are plenty of terrible games that nobody likes that have none of those bad bits.

It's a fun game I played through, which eventually turns into a very well-executed mindfuck during the later campaigns. The first third of the game is free; after that, you have to pay. Which is sad, because it only really gets good in story terms after the half-way mark; its creators seem to have failed to grasp the concept that selling MORE games is a GOOD THING.

After the two free campaigns, you're likely to be underwhelmed. After playing them, I think I really only bought the full thing to support the indie market, because of the rave reviews it got, and because of my pathological desire to find out What Happens Next. What did Happen Next, however, took my breath away.

Let me just say this: If you can make me feel for a Little Sister, using top-notch graphics and voice acting, you're competent. If you can make me feel for a box with pink hearts painted on, using just a creepy robot voice and some reverse psychology, then you're clever. But if you can make me feel for some dots on a line - if you can make my eyes all watery near the end in a way that has nothing to do with the glare of my computer monitor - using mediocre pixel-art, addicting gameplay and some text, then, well, you are a genius.

Portal was pretty much a parody of most FPS tutorials from the late nineties where you're herded through an indoor assault course, and told the rules of the game by scientists and military officials looking down on you from behind bullet-proof glass.

To me, part of its success was from giving you the chance to rebel against nostalgia.

Trying it out right now, with one of their capture the flag FPS's. The main interface is browser based, and you can join a 'party' in the main lobby so you can all go into the right game server together.

Some guy used stop motion animations and YouTube's interactive buttons to produce a weird little video game.  You can't actually move your character (Guile) but you do get to control what moves you pull off.  It's fun to play with for a little while but gets old fast.

Yeah, the highest I've gotten is 125.  Of course, hosting gives an enormous advantage.  After I realized that I started amassing points and then letting someone else take me out, just so they could enjoy being massive for a while.  They need to make a "tag" game mode.

I started doing that. I'd set the game timer to 30 mins, get all the way to being a huge robot full energy bar, then stand still and let people smack me until my energy was gone, and try to get it back lol

Don't Look Back
Don't Look Back is a short, simple sidescrolling platformer. You control a pudgy pixelated blob who is mourning for his lost love from the underworld. The whole game is pretty quick. Shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes to beat.

made it to level 13. good game!

If you can find a gun that only costs 3 AP to shoot, and you get the -1 AP talent at level 8, and use offensive stance, you can take ten shots in one round. It kills anything! You just need to find a decent gun that only costs 3 AP to shoot, which is actually kind of tough...

And that's totally okay. The game is stupid and the control is nearly broken, but you need to play through this game (it'll take like 30 seconds) and see/hear the whole ending. It's fucking hysterical.

you can beat each one in 5-10 minutes. I find this concept hilarious. And the games are extremely fun if you're any good at mega man. (I always found him easier to control than samus or arthur) The music is a rockin OCRemix of original game music, and the boss fight for each game is spectacular.

Nitrome makes some pretty fun and cute games. Tiny Castle is no exception. It's a combination platform/puzzle game that's not too terribly hard to beat. Took me less than 30 minutes. The ending is funny too.

Another Mario knockoff. As a cat thing, you traverse levels that are specifically designed to make you ragequit. Lives start off at 4 I think and soon dive into negatives.

Despite being one of the most difficult games available, the success at finishing it is worth it.

A game that I've played a couple times, and enjoyed quite a bit both times: Robokill (http://www.rocksolidarcade.com/games/robokill/).
It's a simple overhead shooter where you play a robot fighting other robots whom have taken over a space station. Somewhere between the smooth graphics and the fun upgrade system is the mysterious reason I like it.

A survival-horror game that reflects what the genre used to be about: encountering monsters and only being able to either run away or hide. Definitely the scariest game I've played and it sounds like the feeling's mutual to many reviewers.

Also features a sanity meter which goes down whenever you are in the dark (which is nigh constantly), you see anything supernatural, and when you look at the monsters. It's worth the $20 price tag on Steam if you've got the cash for it, though it does have a demo.

There was a gamecube horror game that had one of those. Can I heck remember enough details to google it though. The more insane you went, the more lovecraft-esq visual effects messed with you ,even up to the point of a fake gc bsod. :D



That would be 'Eternal Darkness', and it almost had a friend of mine convinced that our dead friend (who's urn of ashes was in the closet.... hey it was his apartment) was messing with him on purpose. Probably shouldn't have been playing in the dark, come to think of it.

Mindfucks include:

- Constant use of a skewed camera angle accompanied by whispers, cries, and other noises (such as footsteps, women and children screaming, doors slamming, the rattling of chains and the sound of a blade being sharpened)

- The lower the sanity meter, the more skewed the camera angle and the louder the sound effects.

- The player character finds him/herself walking upon the ceiling after entering a new room.

- Walls and ceilings bleeding. Attacking them causes more effusion.

- Appearance of large numbers of monsters that are not really there, and disappear when attacked.

- simulated errors and anomalies of the TV or GameCube, such as;

- The volume is lowered, accompanied by a fake television volume indicator on the screen.

- Epic XBox CPU failure.

- RGB mismatch on the TV, or going to a blackscreen.

So if you're in a tight spot and have no healing, the best thing to do is to save the game, go away for a bit, and come back to where you left off. I was killing time by doing laundry and realized that by doing my laundry I was actually playing the game. Having a cup of tea with my mom was a game activity.

I didn't play a lot of the metal gear game for the PSP, but it had a cool real-world interaction too. In that game you were recruiting soldiers onto your squad. You'd find them through game play, but you could also discover them by trying to connect to a new wireless network. So the most effective way to play the game was to take you PSP and walk around down town scanning for wireless networks. I used to play it on the bus to work, and often I'd be able to pick somebody up if we were stopped at a red light for a while. I was coordinating my game play with the bus route - isn't that crazy?

The Metal Gear games are filled with mindfucks, and neat little play mechanics, like that...
One of my favorites is towards the end of Metal Gear Solid 2, when you start getting really bizarre codec calls from the Colonel.

Worth watching for the codec calls, It might be a little bit of a spoiler, but the game does get much much weirder after this part.

The vid doesnt show the fake Game Over screen, which is also pretty fun.

Also, some of the codec conversations towards the end of the game, when you realize exactly what it is that you've been talking to all this time, are pretty awesome.

Chiming in to say that Eternal Darkness ranks as one of my top five favorite games of all time, and it's remarkably one of the best games that nobody ever played.

I've heard rumors of a sequel, or something in the same vein by that developer for years now, but have yet to see any real news about it.

And yeah, the sanity effects are really that good.  I managed to find the one glitch in the game, though, where in a certain room the way will open up, then if you exit to go through the level again to find stuff you missed, the way will be shut and unopenable.  I recommend running two save files to anyone who plays through.  Oh, and be wary of what you read about the game.  The sanity effects are so much better if you don't know what they are specifically.

Silicon Knights says its trying to make a sequel, but running into problems because the way the first game was financed means they have to go through Nintendo, not anybody else.

Disappointingly short game, couple of hours at best, but beautiful and engaging with a good combat system mainly based on reflex, completely worth it. Good soundtrack. Will be cheap as hell by now.

I had an awesome level 12 kitlid wanderer with 67,300 mana pearls but he got squished.  :cry:

Also, the "create skeleton" spell is awesome. I wish it let you make more than one. I want my own skeleton army, dammit!!!
