It seems that the "questioning your authority" is more like a thing, but used as an offensive tactic.

In a way, he's asking for an Appeal to Authority.  The counter to this is a version of "even if the biggest idiot says the sun is shining, that doesn't make it dark out."

I actually tried that. Not that exact example, but the same premise. He either didn't get it, or refused to get it. At what point (if ever), after all reasonable attempts are made, is it okay to just punch him in the face?

Got into a huge argument with my original bass player about the dangers of advertising, especially in regards to kids. He refuted my claim that advertising (or, as it is in America, blatant psychological manipulation and abuse) can be harmful by falling into a straw man argument, in which he called into question my authority on the subject (because I am not an authority, all my arguments are invalid). Not only did he continue to defend immoral and outright dangerous advertising techniques (despite the fact that he has a young daughter, the most susceptible target of said ad practices), he also was incapable of understanding that calling my character into question was not a logically viable means of argument, leading to invalid counterpoints in regards to my original premises.

I have just printed up a packet for him, including guidlines to a logically cogent method of argumentation, as well as a definition of "fallacy" and a description of a straw man fallacy in particular, as well as a few articles from science weekly that help illustrate my position, but not as well as I would like. Does anyone have links to good, preferably pier-reviewed, articles that can help bolster my argument?

How do I get my life back on track?

Doesn't matter, as life is intrinsically meaningless. Furthermore, the concept of "on track" is entirely subjective, leaving the only person that can truthfully answer this question for you is you. Instead, I suggest the following distractions: A good book, An obsessive hobby, tasty food, Recreational drugs and/or Sex (meaningless sex, of course).

Lack of foresight combined with bad decision making skills. That, and your actual odds of meeting any human being that isn't a complete cheesdick are astronomically against you, let alone one that you actually want to get freeky-deeky with.

I have to be honest.

I was going to come here and post some stuff, maybe something funny or light-hearted, to sort of put up the image that everything is just peachy.

But, frankly, it's not.

I absolutely hate things in my life at the moment, and there's no sense in trying to act like everything is ok. I have not been posting lately because I have been feeling a bit off, and I don't want to drag anybody down with my (currently) piss-poor attitude. Though, there are many of you whom I consider good friends, and I feel like I owe it to those in particular to let them know that I'm alive and I imagine that I will continue to be so for some time. Sometimes I forget that there are people that like hearing from me every once in a while.

No, I don't want to talk about it, and I don't want advice. Some puzzles have no solution, and some situations call forth no advice, aside from a slight shrug and a "I don't know what to tell ya, man..." My issues at the moment appear to be fractal in nature, at all levels of magnification, things are equally as fucked. I see no immediate fix, as the whole world seems vastly fucked, and nobody seems to have the gumption or know-how to do a good god-damned bit about it, and if you so much as even try to do something positive and productive, there's a line of people waiting to "knock you off of your high horse" for being such an "arrogant show off" or some other such tripe. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Fuck it, I guess. Right?

Anyway, I will try to be around more, and I will try to motivate myself to contribute something other than a pathetic courtesy letter.
