Second life is crazy I hear, you can do all sorts of shit on it. Who wants to try and sell flamingos on it?

has anyone here done anything with second life? it's getting pretty popular, governments and politicians and major corporations are setting up offices in second life and holding press conferences and Q&A sessions and such.

I used to run a world known as 'kaoz' in honor of chaos magic in Dreamland Park years ago.  It was actually pretty dorky now that I look back on it.  I never signed up for second life, which may be good since I hear it got hacked somewhat recently.  I'll probly sign up once I get a new computer, and use it to ad my future art venue.  Maybe get in on the active worlds mall world too.  The comp I'm using now is so sucking bats.  I can barely even type on it,  let alone see the screen, but still usable.  I give it a couple weeks, which is just enough time to get a new vista.

it's on online virtual world where you create a character and do stuff. like a huge 3d chatroom but you can create your own content with 3d modelling and C/Java style scripting. you can buy/sell land, etc. you can covert real money to/from in game currency, there are people with businesses in game that end up turning real life profits.

people make all sorts of things from mini arcade style games to strip clubs to nascar style racing simulations in the game.

it's been getting more press lately, lots of people are starting to take it seriously. intel occasionally gives press releases inside of second life, i heard the swedish government opened up an office there, etc.

you can play it for free or pay $10 which nets you the privelage of owning property and gives you a weekly allowance of ingame cash.

lots of people think it'll be the new wave of the future or something, a world where people can come together and chat or do whatever. think there's any potential for some erisian evangelism or whatever you want to call it?

is there more immediate feedback for people than what they get in forums?

do strangers interact with one another on this thing?

is it like chatrooms?

yeah it's real time chat. you walk around in a 3d world so you could be sitting in a cafe type building in the game talking to the other people there, for example. You can just go wherever you want in the world and talk to whoever you find. There are tons of major cities and then also more remote areas and such.

Yep.  It\'s interactive.  Sometimes there'\s interactive talking too through the micrphone.  You'\re probly best seeing for yourself than seeing it explained, if your compunicator is fancy enough.  It is 100x better than the 2d internet.

yeah i think i'll download it and mess around with the free account thing they're offering now and see if it's worth investing time or effort into.

holy fuck

if/when this makes its way on to mobile devices...

well fuck

i kinda feel like a idiot for not knowing about this

i did some more reading about it and talking to a friend that played it and evidently 99% of the game is sex-starved supernerds paying for virtual lapdances.

then again i suppose that's how the internet can appear sometimes. i'm sure there's some decent stuff on there if you know where to look.  seems kinda goofy though.

This should be required reading for anyone considering wasting time/money on this game.

When the blog circuit started drooling all over SL several months ago I checked it out and was unimpressed.

Read up on the protest against the French "Front National" political party or the pranking of Anshe Chung.  These techniques could be adapted for HIMEOBS operations in SL.

I played it a year or two ago on a 3 day demo. Hoverboards rocked but it was no where near as good as quake 3, in terms of gameplay and chat.

i'm scared to go there, this regular internet is already taking way too much of my real life time.

i don't want to get a virtual life. i like this one, even as it sucks sometimes.

Something Awful.  Faust and Rabid Badger post over there, I infrequently read their front page stuff.  Never saw this before.

People have built and scripted ICBMs and Spacecraft within the game.  Of course, these cost realmoney.

When I first found SecondLife Safari, I was thinking something low-cost such as getting a bunch of free accounts and do some kind of flash mob in part of the game.
Title: Re: virtual reality universes
Post by: Triple Zero on February 04, 2007, 05:13:00 PM
if i'd get in there of course i'd had to learn the scripting language first.

also it's important to get at least two or three proprietary "browsers" for this thing as well. just to ensure future generations of "security consultants" (hackers) a good living.

what's an ICBM?
Title: Re: virtual reality universes

Inter Continental Ballistic Missile.

Basically, the nukes we were going to toast Moscow with.
Title: Re: virtual reality universes
Post by: LHX on February 04, 2007, 05:29:15 PM
what are the implications if you dont know the scripting language?
Title: Re: virtual reality universes
Post by: Cain on February 04, 2007, 05:35:22 PM
It wont work?

Or total annihalation as the code gains sentience and sets off real nukes in a carefully timed chain reaction that leaves 99.8% of the earth uninhabitable.

One or the other.
Title: Re: virtual reality universes
Post by: LHX on February 04, 2007, 05:37:16 PM
so you sign up, but if you dont know the scripting language, you cant do anything?
Title: Re: virtual reality universes
Post by: Cain on February 04, 2007, 05:38:30 PM
You can buy scripts.  For real money.

Which is why its so retarded.  People spend real money on this.

Post by: LHX on February 04, 2007, 05:54:46 PM
hmmmm

interesting

how likely is it that people start offering free packages for this thing like all those free web domains where you get your own site, but its got ads all over it and your domain name is just a subdirectory (like geocities.com/blahblahblah)?

im starting to understand

basically if you want to 'build' anything, you would literally have to build the script with the 3D animation in it?

it seems real submersive, but still seems more limited than day dreaming

the only difference i guess is that 2 people cant experience the same daydream at the same time

or something

for me? otherwise it's no fun! :-)

3D realtime chat, yes real nice, i'd rather use MSN or IRC ... unless i can get at the insides of the thing..

- can you make objects that seem different to different people?
- can you make an object that crashes somebody's client on encountering it?
- can you make the crash triggerable, for ex. if you "paint" this "flowerpot" "green", it will trigger the subroutine that overloads the client?
- can you hide some kind of "spying camera" in an object?
- can an object make a client access the internet? read/write?
- can you clone somebody else's objects?
- can you alter somebody's objects?
- if you can, can you write a virus?

this is all great fun, and these possibilities are very real in a massive online virtual reality application. currently i'm toying with the same kind of questions for internet browsers (which are almost the same thing as these 3D Client-applications, except that websites are not 3D and not exclusively intended for chatting), the answers to these questions for browsers are of course: yes yes yes yes yes yes yes and yes.

but srsly, i don't have time to get "into" this .. if it's any good, it will consume all my time, can't have that.
