Also sidestepping the major problem with any prequel, that being, "we've already SEEN what happens next," so there's no dramatic tension.

The fans would NEVER have tolerated the relationship between Spock and Uhura, for example, in a straight timeline.

One of my friends had a shitfit the moment that happened and had to be carefully coached into watching the rest of the movie.

The thing that annoyed me the most about the new movie was WHO THE FUCK GOES FROM ENSIGN TO CAPTAIN IN ONE GODDAMN FIELD PROMOTION OR WHATEVER THE FUCK

I always thought Uhura and Spock would be a good match, and, in an alternate timeline, thought it was awesome.

The promotion thing?  Yeah, well...  There wasn't anybody else on the ship to promote, they were ALL cadets.

They are calling for 2 - 5 inches of snow tomorrow. Dammit.

We actually had a good amount of rain this weekend, so half the banks are gone. It's going to rain more tomorrow and even more this weekend since it appears Aput remembered this is Rhode Island and we typically don't have weather below 40F in February...but it still freezes at night. Mmm, black ice.

Walking home last night on said black ice, after sampling Richter's newest batch of "dear god, my tonsils, my tonsils," was... interesting.

Lived in CT long enough to really, REALLY appreciate NOT living there any more.

I do miss the comic book store, though.

Lemme get this straight.  They sued to stop the distribution of one channel of free internet porn, in order to prop up their own business... thereby providing the address of said free porn to thousands of people who may never have heard of said free porn site.

I've heard of it being illegal to sell something that it's legal to give away, but this is the first time I've heard of anyone trying to make it illegal to give away something that it's legal to sell.

The Streisand effect FTW.

Which is why Rick Santorum will never be president.  (Google his name sometime.)

Oh, I've been a fan of Dirty Ricky for quite some time.

I'm still waiting for him to be caught with an underage rentboy, actually.

You do him an injustice.

It will be multiple rentboys, none of whom speak English, all doped to the gills on valium and booze.  Dirty Ricky will make a statement blaming the "liberal media" for setting him up.

Sure, if he wanted to do it RIGHT.  I suspect he can't even pull off an epic scandal.

Hush your mouth.  South Carolina's governor set the example.  Dirty Ricky will live up to it.

Is the Good Reverend says, so may it be.  I await his spectacular flameout with bated breath.

The most recent movie, however, was brilliant.  A prequel, set against a reasonable "okay...  time travel happened, we're now in an alternate reality, things are different, and anything goes" setting.  Worked for me.

I'm in Providence, and this sounds like a blast.  I've got couch and floor space for a couple-few people if needed (though no place to park cars for free).  This sounds like a blast.

Enterprise was the best series ever.

I blame the theme song for that one not taking off as well as it could have.  I couldn't connect that music with Star Trek, at all.

Fuck.

Just, fuck.

ETA:  I wish I had a more eloquent response to this, I really do.  It's not every day you read something that reaches in and rattles your soul.

Dammit, Roger.  Suu just read this story, sitting in my kitchen.

I now have to mop the floor, and my chair is a total loss.

Thanks.

DMing is an art form, you'll get the hang of it.  A good group of players helps a lot.

Just remember, when they fling a question at you about how the bloody fuck something works, and you have no clue, smile enigmatically, roll a couple dice behind a screen, and respond, "well, you've got no fucking idea, but there it is, what do you do with it?"
