The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to overturn the ban on openly gay and lesbian soldiers serving in the U.S. military, passing legislation repealing the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

The bill -- a so-called "standalone" measure not tied to any other legislative items -- passed 250 to 175 in a virtual party-line vote. It now advances to the Senate.

A Virginia federal judge on Monday found a key part of President Barack Obama's sweeping health care reform law unconstitutional -- setting the stage for a protracted legal struggle likely to wind up in the Supreme Court.

U.S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson struck down the "individual mandate" requiring most Americans to purchase health insurance by 2014. The Justice Department is expected to challenge the judge's findings in a federal appeals court.

Hudson's opinion contradicts other court rulings finding the mandate constitutionally permissible.

"An individual's personal decision to purchase -- or decline purchase -- (of) health insurance from a private provider is beyond the historical reach" of the U.S. Constitution," Hudson wrote. "No specifically constitutional authority exists to mandate the purchase of health insurance."

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Kansas-based Church - monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center - is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.

The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.

Don Meredith, an all-pro quarterback who made his greatest impact on the game after he finished playing, died Sunday at a Santa Fe, New Mexico, hospital, according to a spokesman. Meredith, above at center, was 72.

The spokesman was unable to confirm the cause of death.

Meredith, nicknamed "Dandy Don," was part of the original Monday Night Football broadcast team when the program debuted on ABC in 1970.

The father of a 9-year-old Cub Scout said Tuesday he has been forced out of a leadership role with the organization and ordered not to wear its uniform because of his sexual orientation. Jon Langbert of Dallas, Texas, who is openly gay, told HLN's "Prime News" that he had been wearing the shirt the Scouts gave him last year with pride. The shirt identified him as a member of the leadership team that was selling popcorn for a Scout fundraiser.
But that all changed last week. "Everything was running along smoothly until some of the dads complained," he said. When the complaints rose to a higher level of the Scout leadership, he was asked to stop wearing the shirt and give up his leadership role, he said.

Earlier studies have found that while more time spent in front of a screen led to lower well-being, physical activity improved one's state of mind. That led researchers to believe that upping physical activity levels could counteract the negative impact of watching TV or playing on the computer.

Terri and I are sitting here listening to some treasures that were recently given to us. Old albums. These names will mean nothing to some of you. Flatt and Scruggs, Ernest Tubbs, Eddie Arnold, well, you get the idea.

I call it listening because with albums you can't just sit and hear, it requires participation. One has to change the albums, gently push the arm when it sticks and make sure the albums are clean.

The sound isn't the perfectly clear sound of today, but I don't think it's meant to be. When you listen to this music you read the album cover and talk about the songs.

I think this is the way music is supposed to be listened to. We have lost so much with 32 CD changers, perfectly engineered sounds and generic music. Hell, I guess I should add MP3 players as well.

This music grew up in rough dives under bridges. Honkytonks that would make Doks meetrack look tame. The kind of music for me, that tells stories of hard living and hard loving.

I am listening to old albums, and listening is a verb.

It's not enough that a national survey released Tuesday found atheists were the highest-scoring group on basic religious knowledge — now members of Metro State Atheists are being regular goody-two-shoes.

The group began a three-day campus food drive Tuesday dubbed "Food for Freethought."

The atheists take in nonperishable food items or cash donations from fellow students or other passers-by. In return, they hand out free books.

These are books that have been banned, censored or at least roundly criticized, said group co-founder Joel Guttormson.

Freedoms
We have freedoms, guaranteed to us. I hope every citizen fully understands and exercises these rights.
If you choose to surrender these rights you are quite literally pissing in the blood of every person who sacrificed, suffered or died earning them.


In the less than humble opinion of the author, this includes the Patriot Act, and every other action tolerated by Americans to make them feel safer. This country wasn't founded on the principle of safety but instead on the principle of freedom.



Filters

Having said this, I also think some filters should be considered. Just one example is the Westboro Baptist Church. A simple filter should be used instead of protesting a soldiers funeral and adding more pain to a grieving family.

With great freedom comes great responsibility. What have we done with our common sense? When did it become a daily part of our lives to be hurtful?


Fools

We will always be blessed with plenty of fools. Fools who either waive their rights or abuse them. They are easy to spot. They will be standing in front of a camera screeching idiocy.

Let's assume most of us have an opinion as to whether or not ghosts exist. In my experience those who have some type of encounter with whatever this is usually believe, and those who have had no experience do not. This is only a rule of reference and not a hard fact.

Before starting this thread I researched rituals of death. So many of these rituals, especially in the past, were designed to prevent the spirit of the recently deceased from remaining. Some of this was from fear, some from religious beliefs, and some from a desire to help the spirit move on.

What I have not found yet is why are there so many rituals designed to keep the spirit away? Many myths, if followed back far enough can be found to be based on a truth. Could this be the case in some of these death rituals?

Obviously I am in the believers camp here, so I will operate from this perspective, but will also look for alternatives.

We always assume when collecting evidence of ghosts, hauntings and paranormal experiences that they are visiting our existence, that we are the ones who can help them move on or whatever.  Why? Oh, I know the answer, the question was designed to provoke thought.

What if it is us who are stepping onto their territory? I know, crazy. Humor me.

I am going to start from a completely neutral position. I am not going to automatically jump to the conclusion that whatever this is was ever human. Which will prompt the question of what is it then. I don't know.

But it should be fun to try to find out.

I am running. Something is after me, and I don't know what it is, but I do know if I stop I am doomed. So I run.
Sometimes I feel like I am gaining, and other times this thing feels right on my heels.

I have been running for a very long time. The shadows are getting deeper, the open spaces wider. In the forest the trees are getting closer together, any closer and I may not be able to squeeze between them.

I keep running. I am growing tired, but there is no slowing down. I am thirsty, but there is no drink. I am running.

I have been running so long now I can't remember why I was ever running, but something won't let me stop, so I keep running.

I am so very tired, my run is now a shuffling, stumbling walk, but i don't dare stop. My vision is hazy, my throat is burning from thirst. I know I am going to lose this race and I am afraid.

Finally I fall from exhaustion. I hear my pursuer coming closer, I try to crawl, but my body is spent, so I must lay still.

I can see it's shadow now. I know I must roll over and face this thing. It takes more effort than I thought I could manage, but I am on my back to face this thing.

Finally I see a shape, it is coming.

There it is. Now I can see what I was so terrified of. I start laughing, then I am screaming.

With now more interest than fear I watch as it leans over me and smiles. The smile is not terrible.

It is mine.

See, wisdom comes from living. The harder you live, hopefully the more wisdom you gain. It don't always happen that way, but a lot of the time it does.

Now, I'm not talking about how smart you are, or how much education you have, just about the hard earned wisdom that only life can teach. There ain't no books and there ain't no classroom that can teach that.

CHILTON, Wis. – A prominent Wisconsin district attorney sent repeated text messages trying to spark an affair with a domestic abuse victim while he was prosecuting her ex-boyfriend, a police report shows.

The 26-year-old woman complained last year to police after receiving 30 texts from Calumet County District Attorney Kenneth Kratz in three days, according to the report obtained by The Associated Press.

"Are you the kind of girl that likes secret contact with an older married elected DA ... the riskier the better?" Kratz, 50, wrote in a message to Stephanie Van Groll in October 2009. In another, he wrote: "I would not expect you to be the other woman. I would want you to be so hot and treat me so well that you'd be THE woman! R U that good?"

But a major primary upset at the hands of a tea party insurgent on Tuesday may have put the Senate GOP's dreams of a majority at serious risk.

In the biggest electoral surprise of the night, conservative activist Christine O'Donnell defeated longtime GOP Rep. Mike Castle in Delaware's Republican Senate primary. Castle, a moderate who once served as the state's governor, had been so favored to win in November that his decision to run had reportedly influenced Democrat Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, to abandon plans to seek his father's old seat.

Dear Mr. President,

I am an American. You promised me I could once again hold my head high and be proud. That I could once again be a part of my government. You have lied, not that I am terribly surprised, but I did want to point this out to you.

I no longer even feel a part of my country, I haven't for decades. Why are we as Americans being suspected, spied on, treated as if we have no rights?

What have we done? Are you using the excuse of the few that are guilty to put your thumb on the rest of us?
Why is the government still so shrouded in secrecy that we have no idea what you are doing?

Need I remind you that you, all of you, work for us? Remember the "We the People" thing? I want my government back.

I don't want to see squabbling over unemployment benefits while tens of billions are rubber stamped for unrighteous wars.

I am sick of seeing school funding and other domestic funding cut to support defense contracts and wars.
When will the focus return to our homeland? Never?

Yes, you inherited some bad things. Isn't it time to move on now?

Perhaps we need to eliminate professional politicians so the average American (remember us) has an actual voice. In fact, I think one term rules for every office should be in place.

I also think the Patriot Act (which strips Americans of rights and is anything but patriotic) should be repealed. Trim Top Secret America back to a manageable size. Eliminate excess spending by not spying on the citizens of this country.

I want my country back. None of you are any kind of royalty. You work for me. Now get to work.

In closing, this has been said far more eloquently than I ever could, so I will end with a few words from Patrick Henry.

An unknown preacher in Florida decides to burn some religious books. His church is a tin building and has 50 members.

A church in Memphis has had a sign up for over a year welcoming the new mosque.



Who gets the coverage? One is filled with hate in spite of what words come out of his mouth. The other practices christianity by welcoming people.

Well, you know the story. The media has turned the Qur'an burning into an international incident. Without this kind of irresponsible reporting no one would have ever heard of this guy. Why did the media do this? Because hate, sex and death sells.

Love and acceptance doesn't.

I am all for freedom of speech. I am also for responsibility and common sense. Take as an example a Westboro Church protest. How much do we hear about the person being buried? What do we hear? What do we see? Just fools shouting and carrying signs about how god hates fags.

In all of the shouting about ground zero has anyone in the media ever talked to the imam from the other mosque that is close?

Journalists, at least these kind of journalists, have just joined pedophiles as the people I most hate.

I know many claim Yoko was the disruptive cause that caused the band to break up, but I wonder.

I wonder how much it had to do with the industry itself. They forever shaped music, and the direction it took. I expect there was tremendous never ending pressure for them to do things differently.
They reached the pinnacle by doing things their way. How long could it have continued without them turning into something like The Rolling Stones or The Grateful Dead, touring for 30 years after their last hit.

-Raised Taxes
-Negotiated with the "Evil Empire" without Pre-conditions
-Made a Decision to "Cut and Run" From Lebanon After Our Troops Were Attacked

Cenk wrapped up his post this way.

    The bottom line is that, no matter what the reason, Obama seems to be in some important ways significantly to the right of Reagan on the political spectrum. If Reagan ordered the execution of US citizens abroad, he might have been impeached. If Obama tried to give undocumented immigrants blanket amnesty the way Reagan did, he might be impeached.
