I wasn't aware of that.

Either way, there's a public outrage over it on the Facebook.

Me personally, I think its imperialistic as fuck, but on my hierarchization of problems it ranks so low that i find it hilarious  :lulz:

Why not? America does it to everything. Let's take a solemn day to honor your ancestors and make it commercial. Halloween isn't Halloween enough because we removed all of the cool shit. We need sugar skulls. And of course, tequila, a liquid we can drink any day of the year. No, we killed the richness that was European Halloween, and then Santa steamrolled over it on his way to April. It got bland, throw some salsa on it. Make it a cartoon to explain why we really celebrate Dia de los muertos instead of the money bonanza that it's becoming. It will be in regular rotation, along with Hallmark commercials and "only 55 shopping days left!" commercials.

Sometimes you have to take what you can get, ya know?  Winning that battle was amazing, given the disparate forces.  Losing the war doesn't diminish that, because Mexico had no chance at all in that conflict.  Or even in that battle, which is why it's still studied to this day.

America's culture is appropriating other cultures for the purpose of selling shit.  It's tradition.

Also, I think Mexico has somewhat bigger problems that cultural appropriation, like you say Johnny.  I don't know if it's quite right to use #firstworldproblems for such a viewpoint, but perhaps #MEDC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEDC)problems would fit?

I started seeing art about TEN MINUTES after I saw the link.

Yeah, it was just Disney attention whoring again, that's why the art and the tweets and shit "worked".

But anything that makes somebody, somewhere hate Disney just a little more might be a good thing.

You know how the Romans would parade the gods of conquered territories through the streets for victory celebrations, along with all the other booty?

In America, we took the Spirit of Victory/Victoria/Nike herself, reduced it to an abstract swoosh, and pasted it all over our shoes. She's been paraded through the streets and trampled underfoot for decades now.*

America eats entire pantheons. Your cute little "culture" will be happier selling dolls and cruise lines.

*It occurs to me that we've been at war continuously since then, and it's hard to say that we actually won any of them. I really hope there's no connection.

There's also this thing about the State's ideology which is very idiosyncratic:

Our national flag is an allusion to the founding of Tenochtitlan empire, which had a bunch of proto-Aztecs wandering around for years, because there was a prophecy that it should be build wherever there was a brown eagle eating a snake on top of a nopal...

Now, contrast having a founding state-sponsored mythology with the current political practices of killing dissident indigenas that want to live without state interferece... along with the fact that Mexicans are more Spaniard garbage than Aztec (ala England and Australia, or England and USA for that matter).

So, Im on the fence on all of this since: is it worse to cling to traditions that only bolster primitive-nationalism and state mythology regarding the unity of all mexicans? or is it worse for future generations to be indoctrinated by a Disney movie with anglicized characters?

Scylla or Charybdis? Might as well burn down the ship.

Mexico was full of Natives other than Aztecs. I wouldn't say they're predominantly Spaniard.

I'll have to look into that, because yeah, we're called "Mestizo", and I think that not most of the indigenous population was murdered like the USA, but rather there was co-mingling between natives and Spaniards.

EDIT:

QuoteA study by the National Institute of Genomic Medicine, Mexico reported that Mestizo Mexicans are 58.96% European, 35.05% "Asian" (Amerindian), and 5.03% African. Sonora shows the highest European contribution (70.63%) and Guerrero the lowest (51.98%) where we also observe the highest Asian contribution (37.17%). African contribution ranges from 2.8% in Sonora to 11.13% in Veracruz. 80% of the Mexican population was classed as mestizo (defined as "being racially mixed in some degree").[209]

In May 2009, Mexico's National Institute of Genomic Medicine issued a report on a genomic study of 300 mestizos from the states of Guerrero, Sonora, Veracruz, Yucatán, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato. The study found that the Mestizo population of these Mexican states were on average 55% of indigenous ancestry followed by 41.8% of European, 1.8% of African, and 1.2% of East Asian ancestry. The study also noted that whereas Mestizo individuals from the southern state of Guerrero showed on average 66% of indigenous ancestry, those from the northern state of Sonora displayed about 61.6% European ancestry. The study found that there was an increase in indigenous ancestry as one traveled towards to the Southern states in Mexico, while the indigenous ancestry declined as one traveled to the Northern states in the country, such as Sonora.[210]

I guess this is a start.

You do realise this is viral marketing 101, right? Disney have no interest in copyrighting or trademarking anything other than Mickey's ears which, imo, they're entitled to. They want people outraged that they would consider copyrighting things because if people are outraged they talk about the film. Then it'll come out Disney were never intending to copyright anything and what had in fact happened was that someone in the press department "got the wrong end of the stick" and the film gets another free mention in the press and social media.

Personally I'm all for it - less environmental impact than a poster campaign.
