nobleprice of literature 1946
s0me g00d b00ks he wr0te:
- steppenwolf [the life of buddha]
- the glaspearlgame [(c)1943 'science fiction-like' story
... deals with a special game in past, present and future!]
phantom pope (feedMYback)
ooops!
sidhartha - is about life of buddha
steppenwolf - hmm... m0re practical simulation
btw: hesse is not exactly what you guys would expect as CHAOTIC literature!?
but no doubt, it's a clever alternative to learn how all things are related in same way.
anyway - i still prefer his genius glaspearlgame
phantom pope (readYOURweed)
Good books, this one also is a favourite.
Demian (pub. 1919)
about youth, growth and Abraxas.
Man, when I was younger I started looking through my dad's old college texts and read Steppenwolf and Siddhartha. I've recently re-read Siddhartha but haven't gotten around to Steppenwolf...really loved both, though. Simple and intense.

*EATITTY WUMP*
hesse was a good writer. the glass bead game was his lifes work, and my favorite, i keep giving all my hesse books away though, i have to buy them all again.
For a nicely cynical view of Herman Hesse's writings and his popularity, I recommend "Why They Read Hesse" an essay by Kurt Vonnegut (found in the Wampeters, Foma, and Granfaloons book.
(does it count as a zombie thread if it's still on the front page?)
i'm 25 now.. first read siddhartha at 23. i promised my 40 year old cousin i'd read it ever ten years hence.. i imagine it will be a brand new experience each subsequent time.
