Thank you, Payne.

Right yeah the speed of light is a constant regardless, but it would appear to reach the individual traveling towards it before it would the individual traveling away from it when observed by someone in relative motion. Though only at speeds beyond reason for the example and the difference in time would be undetectable to the naked eye, but even still a consequence of light speed involves such non-simultaneous events. Or so I think!

damn yuo and yuor prudish work environments!

that is one thing i seriously don't understand, but i'll write it up to some american grayness or something. if on the one hand you are allowed to surf the web, read forums and even view rather disturbing pictures, but as soon as there's a naked nipple visible you run the risk of getting fired over it?

i mean, it's okay i don't want people getting fired, so i don't mind playing along with the rules, but i seriously don't understand how "ms Thelema" is not ok (cause she's nekkid under all those tattoos) where some of the utter filth posted in other threads goes right past the eyes of your boss "ohh some huge deformed camel toe woman, that's okay, regular work stuff, that" ? and that 777-guy saying "testicles" ? and some of those deformed baby pictures?
Title: Re: 777

Well, let's put it this way:

Most of us at work aren't supposed to be on the internet in the first place.  I know, we're such rule-breakers!

Anyway, if a manager was to come along and see Mooseknuckle, we'd get in trouble, and maybe fired for violating company policy.

However, if they were to come along and see an exposed breast, or anything blatantly sexual, we would immediately be fired for violating the sexual harassment policy.
Title: Re: 777
Post by: AFK on June 06, 2007, 03:53:48 PM
I don't think it's as much as we're "allowed" to do it, as our bosses don't really know what we're doing.  At least in my case.  But if my boss were to pop in and surprise me, I would rather them see some texts then some tits.

yeah what LMNO said.

ooookay.

how is this sexual harassment? who is it harassing?

or is "sexual harassment policy" sort of the catch-all name for .. no what is it?

i thought sexual harassment policy meant something like that if Suu would be your collegue and she would ask you to stop making those lewd remarks (yea, if hypothetically she'd get sick of the attention or something ) you oughta stop doing it -- or else get fired (or sanctioned)

but, apart from that, well if i understand correctly what you're saying, for your average boss nipples would be per default more worse than, say, a motorcycle-crash.jpg -- still think that's kind of weird, but i'll strike it up to culture or something.

heh what i sometimes did when i was working in an office was to turn off the stylesheet (opera shift-G, firefox view>page style>no style) and images (opera shift-I, firefox somewhere in the preferences) and it would look just like i was reading some boring long ass IT-related website comparing one sort of software whatchamacallit to the other. cause IMO getting caught with either kinds of images on the screen would be reason to, not get fired, but at least be considered "not working".
also writing the replies in Word (or in my case, my code-editor PSPad), makes it seem you're not browsing the net, plus doubles as you don't lose long replies there quickly :)

In the US, it's called a "hostile working environment".

That is, while a car crash jpg would be uncomfortable, titsgalore.com would be sexist, which would make the company vulnerable to a lawsuit.

It's all about the money.

it would be considered "sexual harrassment" because you are potentially exposing other employees to things they don't want to see and may be offended by.  It's the same idea as telling a sexually suggestive or "lewd" joke to an employee and them getting offended.  The co-worker doesn't expect to be subjected to that kind of material at their place of employment.

The sex being worse than violence thing is defo a throwback to xist morality bullshit.

Showing a tortured and dying fucker, with nails through his hands and feet is a pleasant and inspiring image for teh children but a nipple is so evil that even saying it out loud will corrupt their tiny minds for evar.

.. but surely, just like the creationist christian fundies against science, this is the exception rather than the rule right?

right? right?

cause just what Silly says, in general i would be much more offended by stories and/or pictures of torture/violence/etc than collegues discussing lewd jokes, sexual topics (moves/techniques), etc. because that's just natural. well maybe not when you have a meeting with an important client, but that's also not the time to start talking about severed limbs and shit.

are women on the workplace allowed to talk about their menstruation cycle by the way? just wondering. because that's some shit i sometimes seriously don't want to hear, but then again, i respect their freedom to be able to

an even more direct example is (not really related to workplace ethics), so far i managed to "dull" myself into being able to view goatse, tubgirl, meatspin, lemonparty etc with a neutral point of view, i could easily spend 30 mins photoshopping someone's face in goatse's ass without getting nauseous or anything. it's just people with a disgusting fetish.
on the other hand, there are pictures on rotten.com that show dead people with half of their heads blown off (the motorcycle.jpg and others), really gets me sick within a few seconds and i have no desire to "dull" myself from it either. there was this one time when i had this great idea for a photoshop collage of some lame joke involving a milka cow and a palestine teenage suicide bomber (dont ask--it's a really lame dutch word joke based on a commercial), so i went on googling for images of palestine teenage suicide bombers .. if you click to the journalist world press photo stuff .. yay real world severed bloody limbs all around! uglyness of war! poor little kids with shrapnel wounds but without family! very quickly i decided this joke was definitely in bad taste, even for me.

you would think so wouldn't you?  But when you get down to it I think it's like LMNO says, about money.  It's a vehicle for someone with a grudge against a company, or someone in a company, to act.  I think there probably are some adults out there, for whatever reason, truly are offended by "sexual" imagery, but I think these same people would probably be uptight by violence as well.  But the sexual harrasment has become a sort of slam-dunk thing legally.  Companies are real hard-core about making sure their employees are trained on sexual harassment, because if they are not it can become ammunition against the company.

I see it all as just a pictorial representation of stuff that atoms and molecules can do when subjected to specific circumstances.

This level of detachment may sound callous but the alternative is much worse imo - if you are affected by any kind of image then you are liable to be manipulated by such means. Led by the nose. Terrified with images of bad or tantalised by images of good.

in the states at least,
people aren't nice and cautious because they're good people
it's out of fear of being sued.

McDonalds doesn't put warnings about the heat of their coffee because they're worried about you getting burned - they're worried about you suing them.

Though torture pics may seem morally worse than a nipple,
legally the nipple is sexual harassment
and the torture pics are just distasteful

yeah, it doesn't really make logical sense, but these rules arose from bad situations. I'm sure there were workplaces where women were intimidated by nude calendars, sexist jokes, leering, etc. So now we all lose a little bit of freedom to prevent the really extreme circumstances.

Trying to legislate about shit like that tends to lead to utter overkill. Takes away your rights a wafer thin slice at a time.

Comedy took a major stand against 'political correct' for the simple reason that there is no joke, either in existence or theoretically possible, that wont offend some whining fucking idiot.

Judges shouldn't be so fucking lazy - treat shit on a case by case basis like they're paid so much to do.

"He tried to rape me in the stationary cupboard" vs "He had a topless chick as a desktop background and I saw it and felt degraded"

Tits look nice. Looking at them cheers a lot of guys up. Get over it.

I know I'm not gonna convince you, but sexual harassment and the casusal degradation of women in the workplace is not only real, but can be devestating to the woman it's directed at.

I've seen it, tbh, but I'm damned if I'll accept that having a nude calendar on the wall is degrading. It can be and, in a great many cases, it probably is but where do you draw the line? Is the Venus de Milo porn? How about a pre raphaelite print, complete with nipples or a David Bailey nude?

K so a playboy centerfold would defo be considered degrading to women, right?

Fuck that shit. I'd say it might be, would depend on who had it hanging on their office wall or who saw it.

Title: Re: 777

I think the idea is that it doesn't have to be hanging up at work.  People should be able to be into those kinds of things but perhaps the work place, where others may be subjected to it, isn't the proper place for display.  Another example, I love listening to loud, heavy metal music, but out of respect for my co-workers, I don't play it in my office because I know it could be annoying to them.  However, if they were to come visit me at home, it's a different arena.  I display what I want, I play what I want, etc., etc.  Visiting someone at their home is voluntary, going to work usually isn't.

Well, here's the question:

If you ran a company, and you knew you could get sued into bankruptcy for sexual harassment, where would you draw the line?

Notice I didn't ask what you think is acceptable, but rather, how much would you want to risk your business.

i admit i completely forgot about the sueing trigger-happieness over there.

certainly it's logical reasoning, but it almost sounds like you're defending it, maybe i'm reading it wrong though.

isn't this one of the things we ought to be fighting as discordians? cause for me, i'd rather not work at a company (or for the same matter run such a company) where sexual harassment means being robbed of your freedom of expression and comfort at a workplace.
in "public office buildings" (town councils, libraries, universities etc) here, there's posters up about sexual harassment ("intimidation" as it's called here). but all of them tell people to go to some "trust-person" if they have complaints, and the first step is always to try and work it out with the parties involved. (and yes, if that doesn't work, for example due to a skewed power relation, there will be sueing. but only then)
i like that approach much better. not having a taboo on these kinds of things also helps collegues appreciate eachother as human beings instead of "rabotniks". these are people you spend the larger part of your day with, they don't need to be your friends, but you also shouldn't need a legal system to manage yourself in yet another social setting.
also let it be known that i fully appreciate that cerain people can handle more than others, what is a simple "oh you guys" lewd joke to one, can indeed feel like harassment to another. same with the "an hero" jokes over here. the trick is to have mutual respect for eachother, instead of fear for another's lawyer. because, really, having the threat of being sued hanging over your head all the time, now that's harassment.

and RWHN, you speak about heavy metal music. do they have the radio on instead, or is it just the slight buzzing of fans and office noises? because that, imo, would be much worse, forcefully being subjected to listening to advertisements while i work! well either way, that's what headphones are for, imo.

No, I have my own radio in my office, so I can pretty much play what I want.  It's just that I'd rather not disturb my co-workers with my acquired taste.  But that's because I like my co-workers, it's not out of fear of being fired or anything.  Instead I play flamenco, irish music, and some other new agey stuff which I do enjoy.  My co-workers seem to like it too, they are always dropping by for no reason.

Very well done.  I was just re-thinking the seeming paradoxes of relativity earlier today and stumbled upon this thread.  Nice little synchronicity.  I know that there have been experiments that support relativity but was there one conducted similar to the one in your comic?  I would like to see a write up if anyone knows any good links/journals (I have access to journals online).

I believe maybe only "thought experiments" have gotten conducted in regards to the relativity of simultaneity.

Here's a 2 minute animated video which explains Einstein's train/lightning thought experiment, which served as the original basis for the comic.

Seems like it would be an easy experiment to carry out these days.  You could easily set up an "observer" (photoelectric censor) to be at stationary point that is equidistant between the instantaneous points at which the two "participants" (mirrors/sensors) would be when the light should reach them from a point stationary relative to the light source and two participants.  You could even have them moving in opposite directions at high speeds to increase the effect.

Title: New Edition of "WILHELM REICH IN HELL" by Robert Anton Wilson
Post by: Bobby Campbell on March 16, 2010, 05:13:51 AM
A couple copies of the new edition of RAW's "Wilhelm Reich in Hell" arrived at my house today, featuring artwork by yours truly.

Available from New Falcon Publications (http://newfalconbooks.net/oscom/product_info.php?cPath=35_47&products_id=100&osCsid=03d2d51b57668310151de82ce81cbb42) and Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Wilhelm-Reich-Robert-Anton-Wilson/dp/1561841080)

Generally speaking it's probably asking a bit much to expect to get to correspond w/ your very favorite writer. Exceedingly so to imagine blundering into their home, burning one, and watching a Frankenstein movie. But to then endeavor to sit down and actually participate in the work, even in such a small way, absolutely unfathomable!

The lasagna remains flying, as per request.

Very intoxicating artwork. I love the clashing colors, and I appreciate some of the psychedelic/religious motifs you use (like characters with 3 heads for instance). Your black and white drawings have very detailed textures that I enjoy. I wish I could draw as well as you.

You might want to consider changing permissions on your topic though. Anybody could just read, write, and execute!

Title: Re: 777
Post by: Triple Zero on July 20, 2010, 10:54:41 AM
Bobby, it's a Linux file permission geek joke, 777 is the unix file permission code for "world read/wriite/execute access". Often when shit doesn't work on Linux, it's to do with these permissions, and the easiest way to solve it is just to set the file's permissions to chmod 777, which allows everything. Of course it's also the least secure setting.

Hello J!

Cherry Island is a landfill where I often work in my job as a land surveyor. I'm outfitted there w/ the tools for to set fill limit grade stakes. By which the workers can determine how much more garbage a given area can house before reaching capacity.

The quote is from Terence Mckenna, re: his fractal spacetime model.

Have a Good'n!

Isn't that a 24" gauge & a common gavel?

You a travelin man?

From the west and traveling to the east, in search of light!

Actually I had never heard of any of that until I googled "24" gauge & common gavel" a minute ago. They're really an extendable prism pole and a sledge hammer, but I see what you mean!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Alright well maybe the results weren't that interesting, but it is kinda funny getting asked if you belong to a secret society!

My artwork in the new editions of "THE EARTH WILL SHAKE" & "THE WIDOW'S SON" will probably make it seem even more like I am a mason, at least, but nah!

I'm NWO Wolfpac 4 Life!

Thanks, Liam!

That's an over the top cross hatch & pointillist drawing from the days before carpal tunnel calmed me down a bit. Glad you enjoy it!

I live in Philadelphia so on a normal day I probably walk over at least 6 Toynbee tiles a day!  I could see dropping some linoleum in the asphalt some day, though wheat paste currently has peaked my curiosity in street art.

Peace!
