Title: The PD.com soundtrack (working title)
Post by: Cain on March 09, 2008, 06:04:45 PM
I'm currently working on creating a compilation of tracks which I think either reflect and mirror the general ethos of this board, or that I think people here will like.

Of course, putting aside nonsense like the legality of uploading all these tracks for you to listen to, I have to say my music collection or knowledge is lacking in some areas, and so would appreciate any help in terms of recommendations or uploads of tracks you think should be included.  Dont worry about the number of tracks, this is likely to be a multi-part collection of songs anyway, so we can always create a new "album" if someone remembers some really good songs down the line.

So far, the list of songs I have goes a little like this:

Dans le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill
KMFDM - Dogma
subQtaneous - Transit of Venus
subQtaneous - Out of Control
PiKANTiK - SUiCiDE CHUMP
Brokedowns - Circular Reasoning
Electric Six - Danger! High Voltage
The Hellsing Theme Tune
KLF - 3am Eternal
KLF - What Time is Love?
MC Untzalot - No Vocoder
PiKANTiK - THE SACRED CHAO
QOTSA - No One Knows
Subhumans - Religious Wars
Alan Moore etc - This Vicious Cabaret
William Shatner - I Wanna Sex You Up
Tool - Hush
Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country
Guns N Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist
Biffy Clyro - Saturday Superhouse
Beautiful South - A Little Time

Cop Shoot Cop - Any day now
The Dandy Warhols - All the money or the simple life honey
Desert Sessions - Who Shit on the Cake
Desert Sessions - Sugar Rush
Desert Sessions - Punk Rock Caveman
Desert Sessions - Subcutaneous Phat
Devo - Some Things Never Change
Devo - Plain Truth
Devo - Gotta serve somebody (live)
Devo - Somewhere with DEVO
Devo - Smart Patrol/Mr DNA
Dire Straits - Heavy Fuel
Dire Straits - Industrial Disease
Raped by Food - Raped by Food
Earfatigue Productions - The Revolution
Ear Fatigue - Keep It
Electric Six - Dance Commander
Electric Six - Gay Bar
Electric Six - Slices of You
El-P feat Trent Reznor - Flyentology

KLF - Hey Hey We're Not the Monkees
KMFDM - Free Your Hate
Kyuss - Demon Cleaner
Kyuss - Hurricane
The Clash - Train in Vain (live)
Louis XIV - Louis XIV
Louis XIV - Finding out true love is blind
Louis XIV - God Killed the Queen
TISM - Greg!  The Stop Sign!
TISM - All homeboys are dickheads
Modest Mouse - The Good Times Are Killing Me
Modest Mouse - The View
Modest Mouse - Bukowski
Modest Mouse - Doin' the Cockroach
Muse - Feeling Good
NIN/Saul Williams - Guns by computer
NIN - The Beginning of the End
NIN - Meet Your Master
Jane's Addiction - Pigs in Zen
Jane's Addiction - Idiots rule
Oasis - The Importance of Being Idle
Outkast - Gasoline Dreams
Outkast - Southernplayalistic
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Pink Floyd - The happiest days of our lives/another brick in the wall
Pink Floyd - The Fletcher Memorial Home

That's as far as I have got, but I still have well over 3/4 of my collection left to go.  And of course, any of the above are up for debate as well.

So...suggestions?

The William Shatner track is a genius addition. I will fight anyone who disagrees.

ISoC: flying donkey honky tonk. The only RWHN track that doesn't leave me a physical wreck.

The Flaming Lips: Do you realise.

Uh. I might think of something else.

I think also "Dogs" by Pink Floyd, and "Trust Us" by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, but otherwise quite good.

Since you've already got four Modest Mouse songs, add "Heart Cooks Brain" and/or "One Chance" to the list.

Well, let me get the self-serving plugs out of the way:

The Illegitimate Son of Convention:  Memed and Bruised (words by Thurnez Isa)
The Illegitimate Son of Convention:  The Spark (can be found amongst the POEEcasts over at POEE)

With that out of the way:

Prong:  Beg to Differ
Prong:  Who's Fist Is This Anyway?
Prong:  Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck
Wrathchild America:  Surrounded By Idiots.
C.O.C.:  Painted Smiley Face (dedicated to the WOMPers)
Anthrax:  Belly of the Beast
Anthrax:  Anti-Social
Exodus:  Toxic Waltz

hell, just download a bunch of mid/late 80s Thrash metal and you're all set. .

I'd suggest "World Within the Margins" or "Episode 666" by In Flames. Lyrics for both read like something that could have come off this forum, if this forum were inhabited primarily by dreadlocked Swedes.

also, for the love of gawd, lose the Avenged Sevenfold. It'll only attract undesirables.

Its possibly the only song of theirs that didn't entirely suck, but I shall abide by the will of the forum.

Neatly however, that brings me onto a point I was going to raise, which is if anyone questions the reasons for including any particular track, they should speak up.  I'm very willing to drop questionable tracks.

Oh, I forgot:

Bad Brains: The Big Takeover
Bad Brains: Fearless Vampire Killers
Bad Brains: I

Why?

No one dared to show for that shower, when nobody turned out to be clean, was not even touched by the water, just another Nazi scheme.

Yeah, The Big Takeover yeah-ah-, My, big Takeover yeahh, yeahhh.

Walking around in total damnation, prepare yourself for the final quest. This world is doomed with a Jew segregration, still another Nazi threat!

Yeah, The Big Takeover yeah-ah-, My, the big Takeover yeahh-yeah-yeahhh.

You've gotta be right, you better take it.
If you don't act right, you'll never... make it!

So understand me when I say, there's no love for this U.S.A. This world is doomed with it's own segregation, Just another nazi test.

Yeah, The Big Takeover yeah-ah-, My Big Takeover yeahh,yeah-yeah.

and

The bourgeoisie had better watch out for me. All throughout this so called nation, we don't want your filthy money, we don't need your innocent bloodshed. We just wanna end your world. Well my minds made up. Yes, it's time for you to pay, better watch out for me. I'm a member of the F.V.K.

and

Not as much but with such intensity. I'd like to be what they would not want me to be. I like to cram their chivalry inside their guts. I'd like to leave it all behind with the rest of the nuts. I, I. Not as muich but with more feeling now. I'd like to forget about you and try to break it somehow. I'd like to push it aside until I can see some more. I'd like to leave you where I found you lyin on the floor. I, I. I guess it's too bad, I guess it's too bad. I guess it's too bad, I gues its too bad for you. It seems the truth always prevails on your face and in the end I see what's in it's place. So in the future you just may see, that's what you'll receive is what you gave me.

I nominate the entire Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry album.

But in particular the song "Part of the Machine"

Just another face in the crowd
wandering towards obscurity.
Driven by the dull desires
of a worn out routine.
Stagnant in the suffocating silence
of emotional exile,
a fugitive from freedom
surrenders to mediocrity.
A helpless voice
starting to sink.
You could make a choice
but you never learned to think
Weary and weakened
victims fall prey
to vague ideals
and passionless play.
Systematic spontaneity
in synchronized society.
Immersed in the cause
and the call of the day,
sacrificed inner needs
give way.
To shared individuality
in collective reality.
A spirit of belonging
satisfies your longing
but the truth is never seen.
False sense of freedom grows
but dependency shows
your part of the machine.
A hopeless choice,
searching for someone real.
You could find that voice
but you never learned to feel

Swoteness.

I seem to have mislaid the original folder where I had some more suggested mp3s in waiting....which means I'll have to copy them all over again...but I'll get onto creating something like a workable playlist for tonight.

Also another suggestion: artwork.  If you're still using Windows, like me, you've probably noticed if you associate the playlist with a new album, and put some artwork in the folder, this comes up as the artwork when you play it in Windows Media Player.  Probably does the same for similar programs too.

If no-one is interested, I'll have to farm out the contract to WOMP, and no-one wants that, do they?

Anyway, back to work on recreating the playlists.

I don't really consider "Art Fag" Genesis to be the same band as "Crap Pop" Genesis. Since "Land of Confusion" is clearly the latter, that was the incarnation I was referring to.

Any uploading site (mihd.net, megaupload etc) will be more than fine.

Has Groove Coverage-God Is A Girl been suggested?  It's been my stock "Discordian Patriotism" song for ages.

ETA: Also, Elfman, Danny - Soundtrack, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 013 - Loompa Land if you can get ahold of it.

Because Genesis sucks, of course.

All Genesis, or just the latter 3 members? I prefer Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett in the bunch myself.

I don't really consider "Art Fag" Genesis to be the same band as "Crap Pop" Genesis. Since "Land of Confusion" is clearly the latter, that was the incarnation I was referring to.

land of confusion is a cool song.

I was thinking that a good way of making this all work is how YTMND did their soundtracks.  Break it up into several volumes and then use Bit Torrent to spread it around.  Just a suggestion.
Title: Re: The PD.com soundtrack (working title)
Post by: Cain on March 12, 2008, 10:30:01 AM
That was pretty much the plan.

I was going to split it into CD sized volumes (for people who want to burn it) and then upload them to Megaupload, Mihd.net etc  I cant actually do torrents because of my provider blocking access, but once I've got them up, then someone else can do that.
Title: Re: The PD.com soundtrack (working title)
Post by: Triple Zero on March 12, 2008, 12:49:57 PM
Jimi Tenor - Year of Apocalypse
Mr Bungle - None of them knew they were Robots
Danny Elfman - Pee Wee's Big Adventure (cause Cram has that on repeat while he's trolling)
Kim & Buran - The Builders

actually, a separate soundtrack "Music for Trolls" might be fun. though i don't think everybody would appreciate the same zany bouncy type of music, perhaps for fuelling hate.

and cain, CD sized volumes? unless you're thinking of CDs of about 700MB of mp3s a piece, i think there's already more than 10 CDs worth in the list so far.

it would also be a good excuse to figure out how to create and distribute torrents.
Title: Re: The PD.com soundtrack (working title)
Post by: Cain on March 12, 2008, 12:53:19 PM
There is a lot, I agree.  I was looking at about 7 volumes, but I'll sort that out later.  I might get rid of some tracks by artists who are already prominently featured among the suggestions.

Right click.  There should be an option for creating an archive, either in .rar or .zip format.

If you don't have that option, its likely your work computers do not have WinRAR or similar programs, such as 7zip.

easiest way to do so is: put them all in your winamp playlist, set preferences>output to "nullsoft diskwriter plugin" (default plugin, comes with winamp) and press play. it'll write all the oggs to .WAV files in a directory you specify.

then you can convert those to mp3 with your favourite mp3 encoder (i use LAME + RazorLame GUI).

if you find a simple ogg2mp3 transcoder tool, i'd love to hear about it, because this is only slightly less cumbersome than it sounds.

Primus - "to defy the laws of tradition" in my opinion needs to be included

and, Primus - Hellbound 17 1/2 has, i think, pretty appropo lyrics:

"questions deserve answers,
answers deserve action.
what am i of the populi?
i am but a fraction.
is there a heaven? is there a hell?
is that a tuna melt i smell?

Apart from that, I think I've got every track I intend to finally put in the download.  Not every track that was suggested was included (I couldn't even find some) but I think at least one suggestion from every person who posted is in there.

So now, I'm going to organize the layout of the soundtrack.  Its going to be in several parts, naturally, made of Volumes and CDs.  Probably 3 CDs to a Volume.  Each will have its own artwork and will be coded so that they show up as that album name, making it easier to organize on your computer and iPods.

But now, I'm going to take a break...

Still organizing the tracks into a decent playlist.  I'm trying to have something like a semi-theme for each CD and, of course, with the amount of tracks there are, thats taking a while to organize.

Chances are I will have that done this weekend, however, and then it'll a matter of sorting out the artwork and uploads.

Not bad followed by emo is a logical impossibility.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to find it, but Crash Worship-Discordia is pretty cool.

Actually the band itself is worth looking into.

Has KMFDM-Megalomaniac been suggested?

Probably.  There are at least 6 KMFDM suggestions floating around though, so I don't think we need any more.

Upon reviewing some lyrics, I'm rescinding my suggestion.

Then again, I recall submitting entire albums, so...

Yeah, but if you listen to enough KFMDM they all start to sound like the same song anyways.  I usually don't put more than three on any mix I make.

I have an .mp3 of the live version of that song (the Stop Making Sense thing, thought it was better than the other one) if Cain wants it

Also (sound quality a bit bad):

The Youtube link should be fine.

Also, I am now formally requesting WOMP create a cover for the album "Sweet Merciful Fuck, Pterodactyls!"

hm, as i suspected, this is ridiculously easy:

http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-create-a-torrent/

sites like ThePirateBay and Torrent-Downloads have free "open trackers" you can use.

basically
- in uTorrent you click File > Create new Torrent and then select a directory of files you want to include in the torrent.
- then you copy one (or more) of the open trackers from that blog article into the right field.
- then it will build the torrent file for you, which you can save
- now start seeding this torrent file

apparently, if you use for example the Pirate Bay's open tracker, your torrent will NOT appear in the general listings and searches of this site, you are just using their tracker, which does the job of keeping track of everybody who is in the swarm, so that new peers can connect to them and start sharing.

- in order for other people to start downloading (and sharing) this torrent, you need to send them the torrent file. so the only people that have access to this data are the ones that have the torrent file. (in order to appear on search listings, you need to specifically upload the torrent to piratebay or mininova etc)

I have just tried this out with an extended pack of my ableton mixes, made a torrent, and sent it out to some friends. It took a few minutes before anything happened, but now the swarm is transferring and tossing pieces around happily :)
Only thing is that probably for a next torrent i'd better include more than one open tracker (just used the piratebay one now), for more redundancy, cause if this tracker is offline, the swarm stagnates.

Secret Chiefs 3 - Ship of Fools

This is a fun off-kilter instrumental that really gets across the feeling of being in an out-of-control vessel of some sort.  Good stuff, as is most anything by Secret Chiefs 3.

Edit to add a youtube link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CELK2CC2eFM

And listening to that youtube link, I actually like the version they're playing there MORE than the version that's on the CD I have.  More echo and reverb or something, I think.  That or they were using more drugs on stage than in the recording studio, and the playing is more off-kilter because of it.
