Title: The Horrormirth Thread
Post by: Cramulus on March 31, 2008, 11:15:19 PM
(http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb163/wompcabal/horrormirthh.png)

A Google search reveals that we did, in fact, make this word up.

Now it's time to figure out what it means.

I take it to refer to an instance where you're so horrified that it's funny. It describes the STFUBAR state of modern living - a series of contradictions and paradoxes which are both surprising and predictable. Current events which are disgusting but amusing at the same time. It's the thin line between laughing and screaming.

ITT, list things which evoke horrormirth

My number one horrormirth moment this month was watching the "anti-corruption" governor of New York get busted for ... you guessed it: corruption. But not just that - you know how they found him? They peered into his bank transactions using the Patriot act

:rimshot:

There's this beautiful spot I pass on the way to work. An elegant bridge crosses over a beautiful brook. The beauty of this scene is compromised by a big green sign on the bridge which says "NO GRAFFITI". Nice job keeping thugs from scumming it up!

:rimshot:

My roommate is against music piracy. He buys all the music he owns, and has an extensive legal digital music collection. Upon downloading the latest version of iTunes, it installed DRM crap in every single one of his songs. Now he can't play them on his laptop. BUT AT LEAST HE ISN'T PIRATING THEM!

:rimshot:

Roger informs me that laughing/screaming was the original use of the  :lulz: icon.

one that just occurred to me:
(though this isn't really a good topic for Lollercaust)

on this forum we encourage people to come up with new ideas and to think for themselves.

but when people do, it's tl;dr  :lulz:

The way the media is creating the hype around the anti-islam movie by Geert Wilders, when the movie itself is consider bland and boring even by the radical Muslims. And even worse the government was/is taking this waaay too serious, apparently they even have made plans for evacuating all dutchies out of Islamic countries.

i know the media can work that way but for it to be so blatantly obvious makes me wanna scream.

YES.

Also,
sitting in my car in the school parking lot, eating lunch, idly looking at the cars parked in front of me--the lot slopes down to the perfect pervy voyeur height difference--and realizing that the people in the car directly across from me are fucking. Awkwardly. Then looking around at other surrounding cars to realize that everyone is watching the awful awkward car sex. Great!

Something I wrote a while back:

Laughing and Screaming

Now that we've briefly explored the Black Iron Prison, the Machine™, and the CoN (or at least, my own personal interpretations of these metaphors), we may be able to get a bit closer to the phrase recently brought into contention:  The "Laughing and/or Screaming" meme often used by some Discordians.

As in, "I'm laughing so hard, it sounds like I'm screaming," or perhaps, "I can't tell if I'm screaming or laughing."

As hard as it is to define humor, a few obvious principles are involved: The Unexpected, the Shifting Point of View, Taboo Breaking, Irony, Slapstick, etc.

Now, normally we walk around with our brains telling us that we Know What's Going On.  If we constantly questioned ourselves all the time, we would never be able to get anything done, we'd be unable to function.

Anyway, then we remember the BIP, and how that leads to The Machine™, and how that leads to the CoN, and we get the Shifting Point of View.  And we see that "civil" actions of control are actually monkey minds with guns, which gives us the Unexpected.  And we see the Irony of monkey morality being so incredibly immoral.  And we see the endless sado-masochistic Slapstick.

At the same time, these things make us recoil in horror.  And we see the monkey in ourselves, and our horror at our monkey mind, and the juxtaposition of all the above.

And we get the joke.  And we laugh.  And we scream.

No one ever said that humor had to be funny, after all.

After a company changed hands, the new owner fired all the existing employees.

"Pack up your desk, be gone by Friday. Here's one week severance pay."

On Friday, the employees filed out of the building with low heads and low spirits. The HR Manager stood by the back door, handing each one of them the contact info for the temp agency which the company would be using from now on.

By Tuesday, every single one of the employees (except two) were back at their desks...

with a two dollar pay cut and fewer benefits.

:lulz:

these are the dangers of modern living.

Watched a video on Judaism recently.  It covered Jerusalem, center of Jewishness and Unity and all that stuff, and showed a clip of the Wailing Wall, y'know, the one everybody prays at.

There is a barrier with the Orthodox Jews praying on one side and everybody else praying on the other side.  Have they no sense of irony?

another beaut.

today i saw a WWF poster saying Contribute to a white arctic(with a seal puppy on it awwww)

wich reminded me of the book white mars or, the mind set free by Roger Penrose and Brian Aldiss
in the introduction of wich is proposed to keep mars in it's natural state("White") just like is agreed for the antarctic in the Antarctic Treaty.
http://www.scar.org/treaty/at_text.html
Main purpose of the treaty: "in the interests of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord."
This was done because of what happened to the arctic.

anyhow my point was that it's already too late for a white arctic. The horrormirth bit is that this world wide nature protection organisation doesn't know what 'white' in such a context means.

I'm 99% certain the barrier is between males and females. I grew up in Jerusalem and lived there till recently, y'see. Orthodox Jews are very strict about separating the men from the women during prayer (and on a lot of other occasions as well). I haven't been to the Wailing Wall in years but iirc, they just separate men from women there, like in temple.

Religion!

The fact that, at a stage in our evolution where we can put men on the moon and transmit porn over the intenets, a world leader can invoke an imaginary invisible giant or an equally imaginary faith healing zombie to back up some hare brained excuse for violent military expansion - that's so fucking scary it makes me laugh every time.

That shit was appalling enough back in the primitive, pre technological society that it sprang from but, in this day and age, it's beyond appalling. So fucking far beyond appalling it has to be horrormirth.

George Dubya Bush himself might not be horrormirth.

The actual elections of 2000 and 2004; now those were mirthfully horrific. And the way I see it, the Dems just might snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for a third time in a row!

We should have a political sub forum, split threads into that whenever they degenerate into political commentary.

Or we can just leave them in Apple Talk and Or Kill Me instead of making sub-forum for every single subject that could concievably ever turn up on the forums.

Cain,
doesn't want 20,000 subforums each with 10 posts in them

Well, he did name a similar collection 'los caprichos' (which, if I recall correctly, even means 'the jokes') but if he truly saw the horrormirth, or was just wading knee-deep through pure, unfiltered cynicism, I don't know.

There are some which are pretty 'funny'...on one you see some grown-ups cowering in mortal fear from a grim-reaper type of gestalt, but if you look closer, you see that it's just children hiding under a blanket.

edit: btw, thanks for bringing this up again, I almost forgot how mind-curlingly great Goya is.  :D

To me, cynicism is more on the nihilist side, while horrormirth is a bit more lighthearted; you can laughscreech at the hilarious madness of the world, but you can still try to make it a tiny bit better.

But, you know, YMMV.  :)

I think the original definition was "laughing that is indistinguihsable from screaming".

You know, seeing the horrific slapstick that is the world, and finally understanding the gruesome punchline.

I'm surprised I didn't think of this before but the companion expression for Horrormirth should be "Horray".

For example:

Quote from: Alamaris on May 18, 2008, 08:08:49 PM
Losing a game of Risk 2210 to the noob.  (To be exact, having to retreat to the only free space on the board not nuked by his fleet -- the moon.  I believe all told he had 48 countries, first time playing.)

American Idol.

Pretty much any religion.  Falling under this umbrella is remembering the years where you were a fundamentalist and doing everything your Christian friend told you to do.

Books full of rules on how to break the rules.

Most pagan forums.  For the most part, here, I'm referring to the ones where "everyone's beliefs are accepted", no matter how inane or pathetic they are -- the ones who proclaim free speech and then boot anyone who doesn't agree with them.  For example, anyone who mentions Discordianism.

"New Age" books: they're so bad its funny.  I recall a book which tried to turn Aleister Crowley's works into a fluffy bunny manual for teen witches.   :x

Horray!
