wouldn't all the water fall to saturnus because of gravity or something?
or maybe if it's a big ball of helium, the water causes gravity and the helium and the rings and everything would just fall towards the water and sort of fall apart, destroying that pretty planet.
and then, there's the thing about keeping the water at a temperature where it's liquid, or saturn would just crash into pieces on the ice, because it's cold in outer space.
so you'd need a really humongous blob of water, circling around a sun, and then sort of push saturn into it, and hope it doesn't break.
no offense, but that sounds like the most
retarded idea
ever.

Io is a Galilean moon of Jupiter! You broke the fread!
Maybe I should've just said it's density is less than that of water's.
It's the same with most of the gas giants anyway I think. They're essentially compounds of some of the lightest elemental gases including helium, methane, and hydrogen. The core is fucking liquid rock simply because of the pressure FROM the gas. It's insane really.
They certainly less dense then the rocky planets but in the Solar System Saturn is the only one who's density is below that of water. Jupiter gets close but is just a bit over.
Jupiter's density is 1300 kg/m3 compared to water which is 1000. http://zebu.uoregon.edu/~soper/Jovian/jupiterdensity.html (http://zebu.uoregon.edu/~soper/Jovian/jupiterdensity.html)
So it's sheer size apparently compresses things near the center thus giving it a density a bit higher than that of water. So I'm thinking if it were more Saturn's size it probably would end up being less.
And the density of Uranus and Neptune are screwed because of freezing I assume, even though they are smaller in size than Saturn.
yeah. With Saturn it's just the right size and in just the right location.
Typical. It's the fucking coolest planet in the system.
Agreed. It was the whole reason I wanted a telescope when I was a little kid. That's one of the benefits of living in the frozen Tundra of Maine. In the winter months the skies are extra clear and there's no light polution so it's great for telescoping.
I was actually able to observe that comet that crashed into Jupiter. I wasn't able to see the actual crash, but everytime a fragment impacted the explosion caused a flashing effect on the orbiting moons. It was pretty cool.
I had a telescope, not the greatest, but worth playing with. I didn't see TOO much more than a good surface of the moon and Venus living in St. Petersburg, but we would take it up to Alabama with us and have a field day. Saturn can be tricky to find, but I was able to get a good shot of it a couple of times. I think I saw either Uranus or Neptune ONCE, it was a greenish crescent. I got really excited then lost focus on the damn thing. I'm thinking it was Uranus, because Neptune is fucking illusive thanks to it's wacked out orbit.

IMO we wasted 'uranus' cos if we'd use that for our planet and 'earth' for sol7 then, when encountering alien races we could have said - "I come from your anus"* and lulzed like fuck.
*of course this entire gag hinges on the aliens being the kind of species that have anuses (anni?)
or senses of humour
My lulz are entirely independent of alien species sense of humour or lack thereof.

I'll laugh at their lack of anni and make them feel inferior. I'll sing the praises of having a bunghole until theyre getting busy with powertools.

Cassini pwns your face!
Rays of light from the sun have taken many different paths to compose this glorious image of Saturn and its rings.
This view looks toward the unilluminated (north) side of the rings and, at the top of the image, the night side of Saturn. Sunlight has been reflected off the illuminated side of the rings to light the planet's southern hemisphere, seen here as a bright band of yellow-orange. The northern hemisphere, in the top left corner of the image, is dimly lit by light diffusely scattered through the rings. The planet's shadow cuts across the rings, but light reflected off the southern hemisphere backlights parts of the C ring, making them visible in silhouette. A similar lighting arrangement can be seen in Saturn by Ringshine.
Bright points of light in the image are stars occulted by the rings.
This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 41 degrees above the ringplane. Images taken using red, green and blue spectral filters were combined to create this natural color view. The images were acquired with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on March 20, 2009 at a distance of approximately 892,000 kilometers (554,000 miles) from Saturn. Image scale is 50 kilometers (31 miles) per pixel.

It's glare, mostly. The planet's a damn big ball of reflective gas and ice. Think of how the Pale Blue Dot has Earth suspended in lens flare.
Okay, yeah I can see that. It's still quite striking.
Heard something interesting on the science channel today. Apparently, Saturn's ring system is going to start disappearing, but around that same time, one of Neptunes moons (Triton, I think), will be ripped appart and form a significant ring system for Neptune.
Now that would be the best of all the gas giants. Turbulence like Jupiter (creating spots), Neptune's pretty methane color, and a Saturn like ring system.
Granted, this is in about a billion years, but it's nice to picture.
It's true. Every planet in the solar system is cooler than us.
