I think the comment from Acelib kind of covers my thoughts:
"Do you guys see how the reporter here is kind of stenographing and being buddy-buddy with the intervewiee ? No matter what you think about the particular subject, the way this report is done is just shameful. There is no real questioning of basic assumptions of the person interviewed. Instead the reporter seems to be fully on the side of the powers that be, he just *relates* what they are saying without any fundamental questioning. No wonder the US is in such bad shape with reporting like that."
I see alllll kinds of fucked-up happening as a result of this.
jeeeez i gotta call my congressman! I'M GONNA DO IT RIGHT NOW!!!

On one hand, fewer combat deaths.
Fine.
On the other hand, the perfect torture device, complete and total pain and no marks to betray the torturers.
This is the Orwellian superweapon.
They're going to use it against US. civilians, to "manage crowds". You know that, right? No more annoying protesters!

They're going to use smaller versions in little darkened rooms where they ask you questions, too.
There has got to be a defense against this...

Also, avoid the unmarked van and the sunglassed men who would like to have words with you.
"as long as it is used properly"
That is the lynchpin right there.
Technology is never used properly. People will always abuse it or lose it.

While people are abusing and losing it, there are many others putting it to good use.

the other day I was talking to this guy, and he was like, "People never think, should I invent this? Does the world need this? I wish humans would stop and ask that before developing new technology."
What a spag!
I mean seriously, if should was part of the invention process, we'd be taking boats across the atlantic. Fuck that noise. Give me my microwave and give me my cancer. Give me medicine and give me weapons.
this ray gun scares the carp out of me, to be sure. But I'd rather live in a world where shit like this existed because right now we're marginally closer than we were yesterday to FLYING SKATEBOARD/GUITARS.
Well, a Flying Flying V would be pretty neat.

1,200 unlawful combatants held in black sites and on ship prisons all over the world may disagree that this is in fact a useful strategy.

True. But the list goes on:
Don't be a Chinese civilian.
Don't be a North Korean civilian.
Don't be an Iranian civilian.
Don't be an Iraqi civilian.
Don't be a Saudi Arabian civilian.
Don't be a Mexican civilian.
etc., etc., etc.
But where might one
want to be a civilian?
I intend to move to a more desirable place, with less crime, more liberties, less military burden, more half-way-sensible primates, etc.
In comparison to the US, I think Holland would be a more desirable place to live, but I won't really know until I get there and see for myself.
EU's done bugger all to stop US security forces from kidnapping people off their streets. And Amsterdam has one of the largest airports in the world. I wouldn't place bets on the CIA not having a few planes on standby there.

Being as my life goal is to research artificial intelligence, I'd be a dick to argue against that.
So I'm not arguing against the invention itself. Did you know that the original developer of the technology had the beam reversed in effect to treat chronic pain? The Pentagon pulled the rug out from under him years back when this was called Pulsed Electromagnetic Projectiles, or PEPs. The article on it has since been taken off the net, I understand.
So I'm really not against technology that probably "Shouldn't" be developed. I'm against the militarization of such things.

Seconded. No matter how much people may hope, doctrine will never,
ever drive technology. At best, doctrine determines where the funding goes.
Not to sound Randian, but I also think it's stupid for Luddites to expect technologically inclined people to "just stop" because "the world doesn't need what you have to offer." Honestly, fuck that shit.

recommend much tinfoil head gear as starting point . if it doesnt work at least it keeps in cooking juices for better flavor (season to taste)
It's as if someone was thinking, "Bulldogs and fire hoses are okay, but then King just took pictures of us using them on little kids and made us look like monsters. What if we had an invisible way to hurt protesters?"
We have witnessed the future, and we will all weep together in the The Chestnut Tree Cafe.

Just EXACTLY like someone was thinking that, in fact.
