Title: Green Eggs and STFU ( A working title)
Post by: Dr. Paes on June 26, 2008, 03:48:30 PM
Just wrote this, and it's nearly three in the morning so I'm not happy with a lot of it.
Especially the end, and the middle.
Prolly the beginning too.
Suggestions or comments?

My liberties
My liberties
I won't give up
my liberties.

Would you ditch them for tv?

I would not ditch them
for tee vee.
Your brainwashing
is not for me.

How about to win this war?

The prez is rotten, to the core.
I won't support your monkey war.
Nor will I ditch them for tv.
I won't give up my liberties.

Would you forget them if I said
that terrorists could shoot you dead?

I'll not forget them though you say
that terrorists would act this way.
I've already told you, just before.
You'll not persuade me with this war.
What happened to home of the free?
Your war of terror is not for me.

If God commanded would you obey?
If Jesus asked, what would you say?

Not for your God,
or for his son.
Nor for Iraquis
holding guns.
I will not lose them for this war.
Now do not ask me anymore!
I plan to keep my liberties.
Now go away and leave me be.

Would you ignore them for your car?
Without this oil it won't go far.

I would not, could not,
for my car.

You don't need them, you will see.
We're offering SECURITY.
We won't stop asking till you agree.

Your suits and guns don't frighten me.
Your oil and cars, I do not need
These rights are mine, I will stay free.
You simply will not frighten me.
Not with your God or with his son.
Or with your agents armed with guns.
Not with this war on EVERYONE.
Nor with the lies, on your teevee.
I will not lose my liberties.

Money! Money!
Money! Money!
Would you, could you,
if you were paid?

I know about the deals you've made,
the shady characters you've paid.
You are not known for being loyal.
Forget your cash, forget your oil.
Forget your faith, forget your war.
I will not listen anymore.
Forget the lies you tell each day.
Now leave me be, and go away!
Nothing you offer interests me.
I'd rather keep my liberty.

You won't give up your liberties?
You will insist on staying free?

Now you get it, now you see.
Nothing you say will convince me.

You won't submit, or so you say.
We're bigger than you, we'll have our way.
The choice is yours at the end of the day.
You can die, or you can obey.

... You can have my liberties.
Take them, take them, just leave me be!
I'll calmy sit at my TV.
and dream of life, when I was free.

At the very least done in the style of the original books. I don't got the time or the talent unfortunately but :mittens: to you all the same.

this is great!!

reminds me of that Johnny Bravo episode. what's the original about, btw?

and yes ANIMATE IT

the ending might use some work, but then, it might also be just fine. it depends, it should end with giving up your liberties or being dead, but how should he react? give in and be a slave, or stand up fierce and be a martyr? the choice doesn't really matter, does it?

because this drawing style.. that's dr Seuss? i've seen it so often and i always thought it was from a french kind of thing, saw it in (non-animated) french/belgian cartoons ... weird.

i shall have to research this.

:fuckmittens:

Might need a little futzing about with the words, but good stuff.  If not animated, it at least needs to be illustrated.

Make it into an extended political cartoon?

awesome concept, great execution. I'd say with some fine tuning this piece is a prime candidate for major propogation.

:mittens:  I wholeheartedly applaud using the ol' Doc Seuss for this!  I wrote a paper on semiotics using Seuss once and it was a blast!

Eh, fuck, I can't find it...might have it on a disk...hm...I saw the hardcopy sitting around at some point in my files, but as far as the electronic, it may have gone the way of all flesh.  If I can find it, I'll send it on, surely...I did it on There's a Wocket In My Pocket!  The paper was called "There's a Wocket In My Universe!"...

ETA:  Ok, even worse, dammit, I think I threw it away...went out to the garage, could NOT find it...only hope is this damned chest of drawers--I'll look tonight.  Just spent about a half hour looking after my phone call... :argh!:  NO DICE!  Plllhhtttppttt!

okay so i watched it. very cool.

not the green eggs & ham thing in particular btw, but the Dr Seuss stuff. it seems like i'm going to have to watch more cartoons of his.

it's so weird, it's a drawing style i've always admired, and just came across randomly once in a while, i always thought it was some obscure thing, turns out it just wasnt very well known culturally here. i remember from well random short bits of dr Seuss cartoons i saw on TV, it was very weird and absurdistic, in a kind of "crazy universe" kind of way, i tried lifting some of these concepts to my own cartoons a couple of times, but it felt too much like copying, so i never got far with it (by now i know there's nothing wrong with copying in order to learn a new style--but back when i was younger, i was all about being original by myself).

Seuss prose is iconic in American culture nowadays.  Not many of the past couple of generations were raised without it.  So, being able to reproduce it in a meaningful way is pretty impressive and will garner a lot of cheers and respect, I believe.  Well, from most I know, anyway.

I'd like to point out Brits are not ignorant of Dr Seuss.  I just think he doesn't exactly translate well outside of English, hence the continent probably have not been graced with his incredible writing.

He's been translated into Hebrew, and rather well translated iirc. He is well known in Israel (though not nearly as iconic as he is in the English-speaking world.) But I can somehow imagine how he would be difficult to translate into the languages of Europe.
