Title: Pterodactyls? In MY artwork?!
Post by: Darth Cupcake on June 27, 2008, 03:19:11 PM
IT'S MOAR LIKELY THAN YUO THINK

This is a work in progress. It will get completed when I get back from vacation in New Hampshire, but here's some progress pictures. I would like some feedback on suggestions for further shading colors, background, etc.

Making the stencil...

Transferring the stencil to the canvas...

Filling in the background...

Outlines!

And this is where I have it so far. Yellow pterodactyl on a red background. I'm going to shade the ptero more, but I can't decide if I want to do it with some orange and brown or some green and brown, so suggestions, please? Any further suggestions? I'm not really a very talented artist, so it probably won't get a whole lot better than this, but we'll see. ;)

i vote orange and brown of course.

even if you pick green, shading is important, it looks a bit flat now.

if you don't want to pick a new colour, another way to do shading is to make some of the black lines thicker. so basically make the bottom-right lines of anything that's convex thicker, and the upper-left lines of anything that's concave thicker as well.

as far as i can judge most things in your paintings are convex, except the wings which are concave.

also making the inside of the mouth a different colour is a nice idea, but it shouldnt be a bright colour like white. i dunno which other colour, if you want to stay in the few-colours style, red would be a possibility, but it would make the mouth seem look-through. in that case it's probably better to fill it in with black.
if you're going to do shading with a different colour, you can use that of course.

Yeah, it definitely needs the shading, and it needs something for inside the mouth, I just hadn't decided what yet. I'm unfortunately really bad at shading, so we'll see what happens when I try.

i think shading would wreck it's comic book-ish appeal

i like it the way it is.
