ECH, minimise your programs. Press the 'Print Scrn' key on the keyboard. Then open an image editor, paint will do and paste it in. Save as a jpg and upload to a pic hosting site, then paste the given link here in the [ img ] tags as usual.

the WRATH is everything. As I'm sure you know.
You know, I almost considered running MSPaint under Wine after I switched to Linux.
All these fancy-pants Photoshop type things just don't do it for me.
Thankfully, I found GNU Paint a while ago, which is basically a slightly inferior clone.

Sure, but it all starts looking the same: 1 part figure to 10 parts ground.
BAM. MINIMALISM ACHIEVED.
It can always go further.
Why not just run modern high-demand applications without balancing them on top of ungainly OSes at all?
Why, one would rather enjoy a minimalized command line based OS that maximized performance at the cost of a GUI. Long live the Murloc.

Fallout 2 is one of my top 3 favorite games, along Planescape: Torment and Dungeon Keeper 2.
this is my desktops at work; I remote in to my machine from various PCs in the building. So I can easily tell which ones I'm logged in to, this is the wallpaper I set up on the machines I log in to, locally:
I loves me some longcat, ever since I saw the Incomplete Longcat Retrospectus (http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=3283035#c36390215) This *was* my desktop at work:
I don't have permissions to set it normally but I can set it from IE, or Irfanview or what have you. Meant I had to go looking for it... I thought it would be easier to find it online but it wasn't so I had to hunt it up in my actual machine. That's ok though, because hunting online I found this:
...which is now my current wallpaper @ work.
(why yes, work IS boring, now that you mention it)
I'll going to post my home desktop pc wallpaper when I get home, because it is an adorable picture of my kitten, and will make your head asplode with cuteness. And this sort of shit amuses me.

I
love that game. So fun...
SLAP THE IMPS! XD
Too bad it's too unstable to internets. Me and my friend tried it multiple times via IP using torrented and original copies of DK2 and it always crashed. Every game. Ah well, the single player and pet dungeon where you can make a prison that holds 500 skeletons is sure fun as hell. DK2 is worth it if just for the single player.
SLAP ANYONE YOU WANT! TO DEATH EVEN! (If I remember that correctly...)
I've never tried to internets it. I was always content with single player mode. I'm not usually one for multiplayer games, unless it's like WoW or racing games or SuperSmash Bros or something.
Yeah you could knockem out or put them on the torture rack and slap them to death to make corpses for vampires :D
I just liked to slap my imps because they regenerate on your own land tiles.
Plus they made awesome noises when you picked them up or slapped them.
OOOOO
ANGYANGYANGYANGYANG
WOOHOO!
Gotta love the torture racks. And succubi. I always liked them.
I had forgotten that they made those funny noises. I need to play again... Maybe I'll steal it when I go home for Thanksgiving.

AWWW! KYUTE KITTEH!
Is it yours, or just some random cute kitteh?
That cat looks absolutely mouth watering.
Yep, that's my kitten, enjoying my wife's yarn.
She kinda fell out of the sky recently. Herd some mewling after a party and she wandered onto our deck; couldn't've been more than 2 weeks old. We made a (admittedly minimal) attempt to see of anyone had lost a kitten, but nope...
She looks very like our other cat, who we adopted on the other side of the continent - they adore each other, and there is much cuteness, and playfighting, and curling up and cleaning each other. First time I've had a kitten, and it's kinda fun - but my toes are no longer safe.
KITTEN KITTEN KITTEN
I WANTS A KITTEN

I could has clutter much?
Actually this is relatively clean for my desktop ... but it is due for some sorting. Those Post-Its are as handy as they are ugly.
You have many interesting things on your desktop, saturnine. I'm curious about the "Satanic Death Budget 666".
Just so you know, Laurell K. Hamilton is really good erotic fantasy. Although, if you get into the Anita Blake series, the plot starts going down at about book 8. By book 15, it's like a porno: just enough plot to string the sex scenes together. The Meredith Gentry series hasn't really hit that, though there is more sex in it, in a way, and it's a lot shorter. It's only like 6 books or something so far. I'll get to read the latest one soon because my mom is sending it to me. Gotta love her.
I know that Post-It note that says "For Val:" isn't directed at me, but it made me go O.O and laugh.
What are the Post-Its? Is it a program or something? I'm thinking it would be useful for me to have...
Ha! :) Yeah, I kind of skimmed my desktop before I posted it, like, "is there anything too sensitive on here to post?"
Nope! :D
So, "Satanic Death Budget 666" is just my regular old budget. But budgeting is such a fucking difficult and mind-numbing activity for me (I was an English major; I'm actually math-phobic -- it makes me really anxious) that I decided the only way I was going to buckle down and do it was if I actually made it the MOST METAL BUDGET I COULD POSSIBLY IMAGINE.
Behold!

Moral of my budget: KILL YOUR CAR BEFORE IT KILLS YOU.
Thanks for 2nding the Hamilton rec. I can't wait to get all steamy reading some. (You should send me some in the mail -- I promise not to get the pages too dirty!) Right now I've got enough books on my plate to kill a small scrid. I'm currently reading:
The Gypsies by Jan Yoors
Dynamic Anatomy by Burne Hogarth
Tell Me, Pretty Maiden: The Victorian and Edwardian Nude by Ronald Pearsall
S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-To-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide by Heather Corinna
Sex for One by Betty Dodson PhD
Mudraland vol. 1
Herotica vol. 2
Paint it Black by Janet Fitch
Basically, my reading diet consists of sex, violence, and art. I'm still waiting for the gypsies to give me one of those three :D
My friend Val is bi and poly like me, and I would have asked her out ages ago if our common link wasn't my ex-girlfriend/roommate. So as it stands, we are wonderful friends, and I am trying to help her regain a sense of sexual confidence and stability after some difficult events. I'm putting together lots of resources on DVDs for her, because she doesn't have internets at home and could really use a sense of community!
Yes, the Post-Its are a program ... I gather that Macs come with something like it pre-loaded. I have mine set to load on startup, and you can make stickies in any color, size, font ... It's really useful if you're a writer like me and are constantly encountering/forgetting useful snippets. I can probably send you the install file if you want!

I would consider it, but I have none of the books. They were all my mom's. I actually only have one pleasure book, and only because a friend sent it to me for my birthday. Couldn't bring my bookcase full because there was no room in the dorm room. I was sad...

Just so you know, the Anita Blake series, much more so than the Meredith Gentry series, fulfills those first two 'requirements'. Possibly the third, if you consider writing an art.

A pity she doesn't have internet; you could bring her on here. And why is your common link preventing you from asking her out? Basically, my ex Ari is now one of my best friends in the world. She and I used to be in a monogamous relationship -- which was her preference, not mine, but it worked fine for the time we were together. But the jealousy of me and Val, the two most important people in Ari's life right now, sleeping together would shred her world apart. She said it would destroy her relationships with each of us. So it's pretty much a no-go. It kind of sucks to be constrained like that, but sex carries a very different set of meanings for her than it does for me, and I can respect that.

I did this 2 months ago and wish I had done it sooner. My insurance rates are unreasonably high though, and I do have some convenient grocery stores in decent walking/hiking distance and a not entirely piss-poor public transit system to fall back on. I do a lot more walking, but that's not a bad thing - yet.

false. there are a few viruses for linux, and guess what? they can't fuck up the system because the system is
secure -- it actually protects critical OS components from stupid users, rather than running everybody as global admin like Windows, while also giving users all the rights they need to manage their own environments. linux isn't as obscure an OS as you think, anyway. the vast majority of web servers on the internet run linux, and there are quite a few reasons somebody might want to infect them with viruses.

Uh, yeah, I'm aware that OS/2 is not a distribution. It was a decent OS back in its day, but it was never developed by its owners and has not yet been released as open source so people can develop it.

Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system
(just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.
This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any
feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other
things). I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40),and things seem to
work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, andI'd
like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome,
but I won't promise I'll implement them :-) Linus (torvalds@kruuna.helsinki.fi)
PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is
NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support
anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

Haha, yeah. Because Linux is MAGIC.
That "sudo" thing you do in Ubuntu doesn't exist on every distro. Also, it's not entirely secure.
And I'm pretty sure anyone who knows what they're doing wouldn't run Ubuntu on a server for security reasons.

Well, yeah. Do you want to tell me that I should use Firefox now or what?
You reek of an elitist nerd who discovered Linux a few months ago and thinks he should pontificate to all of us
deluded Windows users because that's the internet cool thing to do.
Both Windows and Linux have positive and negative traits, which is why I use both. And with that in mind, I'm going to go play Fallout 3. Good day, sir.
And strangely enough, on my Windows laptop, the only major issues have been hardware. Everyone knows with adequate protection and software not made by Microsoft, Windows is a perfectly usable OS. Somehow, the interminable tedium of running one malware scan per week doesn't really annoy me as much as learning how to work a whole new OS would.

Linux crashes all the fucking time
only if you do stupid shit to it like run experimental modules/applications or recompile something like an idiot. also, even if linux session does "crash," all you have to do is restart X and get back in, not reboot the whole system. 9/10 times if your system goes down and you have to reboot, it's only because you don't know how to back out of and undo whatever stupid thing you did to get it into that state.
A crash is a crash, regardless of how you fix it.

false. there are a few viruses for linux, and guess what? they can't fuck up the system because the system is secure -- it actually protects critical OS components from stupid users, rather than running everybody as global admin like Windows, while also giving users all the rights they need to manage their own environments. linux isn't as obscure an OS as you think, anyway. the vast majority of web servers on the internet run linux, and there are quite a few reasons somebody might want to infect them with viruses.
Haha, yeah. Because Linux is MAGIC.
That "sudo" thing you do in Ubuntu doesn't exist on every distro. Also, it's not entirely secure.
And I'm pretty sure anyone who knows what they're doing wouldn't run Ubuntu on a server for security reasons.
Oh, and Linux isn't an OS.

"internet cool kid?"
lol.
Well, yeah. Do you want to tell me that I should use Firefox now or what?
You reek of an elitist nerd who discovered Linux a few months ago and thinks he should pontificate to all of us deluded Windows users because that's the internet cool thing to do.
Both Windows and Linux have positive and negative traits, which is why I use both. And with that in mind, I'm going to go play Fallout 3. Good day, sir.
Yeah, I have a Wintendo installation for games too, but as a gaming platform, Windows is a) resource-heavy and b) ridiculous due to its delusions that it is also a functional desktop PC operating system.
In all seriousness, though, I'm just being a dickwad today because I get a 4-day break from my job as an IT engineer/consultant where I deal with Windows and its bottomless pit of glitches, bugs, security holes, bad foresight, and nonexistent diagnostic tools. Plus I need to get all this hatred out of my system before the end of the year so I can fill it up again in 2009.
Besides the platform-level inferiority of Windows, though, the philosophy is what really gets me about Microsoft and its products. The idea that I should have to pay
twice to use my computer is absurd imho. I already own the hardware, so I shouldn't have to pay some cockamamie "license fee" to enable that hardware to do what it is designed to do. Microsoft spends a great deal of time and effort on deliberately crippling their products just to milk more money out of people.
Plus, I like to be in control of what my hardware is doing. I don't really appreciate my information being sent out, even if it isn't "personally identifiable" information, without me knowing about it. If my computer is reporting something to somewhere, I want to know what, why, and to whom. Windows doesn't allow for that. Also, the idea that I should pay a premium price for an OS based on some assumed superiority to other OS's, and then have to turn around and pay an additional price for add-on software that wastes my hardware resources to
protect that supposedly superior OS from various threats, is completely assinine. If the OS is so superior, I shouldn't have to worry about paying somebody else to keep it in working order.
And if you want to get technical, Linux
is an operating system, just not one that comes with all the pieces you might expect from one. But I'm pretty sure you knew that "Linux" is both a specific word for an open-source kernel and a general term for operating systems that are built around the Linux kernel.
This is getting too complicated for me. I'm going back to my C64.

Good. I would have lol'd in my pants if you said you use Wine for gaming. I used to do that for older games when I couldn't be bothered booting into Windows though.

Router firewall, software firewall, antivirus, anti-rootkit, PeerGuardian. I'm crazy paranoid whenever I use Windows online.
I wouldn't use it for shopping or anything and I even turn off automatic updates because I don't trust Microsoft.

I have that on my new laptop, but i'm not sure whether to keep it, cause it's a fucking drain on system resources.
:argh!:
I believe that's Rocket Dock. It's a small drain, but personally I prefer having it - far easier to use than the start menu, and if you use Desktop Coral (http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/desktopcoral/index.html) you can keep it visible at all times without it overlapping any maximised apps - as shown on my computer here:

Right-o.
Cheers.
I've been looking into alternatives to the Dell Dock that came with my laptop, so far I only have RocketDock and Rain Meter.
I'm also looking for themes and stuff, atm.
Rainmeter is very handy - you can see it in my screenie - and relatively easy to modify. Try searching for the Enigma Rainmeter skins, they're pretty good. I've been making my own modules though since I can't find any decent text-only vertical skins - if you want, I can share them here so you can get an idea of how to use them.
Rainmeter, RocketDock, DesktopCoral, Satin2 Theme are basically all I've used - along with custom dock icons. Also, using the stacks docklet for RocketDock is very handy for grouping lesser-used shortcuts or giving a quick and easy way of viewing items in folders:
it's rocket dock.
mr squid puts all this stuff on my computers before giving them to me.
So you would recommend RocketDock over other rivals then, Harlequin? I've never actually used any of these programs before, but I can see why one would be handy.
Anyway, wallpaper

Yeah, RocketDock seems the best (I've tried one other alternative whose name I can't recall, and didn't like it) - very easy to configure, not too taxing on your system, and overall it just works, which is always nice. As I said above, use Desktop Coral with it too, so you have your dock always visible (comes in handy).

Funny story, it didn't have drivers for my ethernet, so I couldn't get on the internet to download the drivers, so I had to boot up a USB version of Ubuntu I had made just a few weeks ago, and download from that.
Also, It wouldn't install with a USB keyboard, so I had to use an old PS2 keyboard. Thankfully, I'm a packrat.

Recently got invited to the BumpTop closed beta. Very shiny indeed. Every icon on the desktop is physics enabled, meaning you can drag them around, fling icons into the recycling bin to delete, spread them all out, have all your icons on your desktop organised into piles. Very intuitive, very shiny.
I assume you can also put textures on the walls, or make them transparent? cause the way it's right now it doesn't really work with the galaxy image you have.
looks kinda claustrophobic, I'd at least make the top wall and one of the left or right walls transparent, to open up the space somewhat. Then, a tiling image of a big dark wooden floor, and on top of it, a semi-transparent pic of a nice rug, it really ties the room together, you know?
A bit of work gives me this:
Also check out these images, they really show off what you can do with this BumpTop thing. Everything operates like proper objects, allowing you to stack them and create piles and all sorts of cool little features. Not necessarily productivity enhancing, but undoubtedly cool.

Bump Top looks sweet, wish I could've made it into the beta.
That said, does it get annoying after a while?
Not really. Obviously most of the time I spend using the computer it's through standard windows, but it makes things much easier for quickly sorting things out. I'm starting to get used to just saving files to the desktop and then being able to group them into piles appropriately as and when I need to - it's surprisingly intuitive to use, and is really well designed, for instance you can just start typing on the desktop and it'll match files accordingly, that you can then sort into separate pile. It's very, very easy, despite a few minor graphical glitches.
I don't know how to post my desktop (rest assured, my retarded ass at least knows that it wouldn't be hard if I'd only try) but it's someone's art from here. I don't remember whose though.
Harly, that Bumptop thing looks epic.
If I sign up to the mailing list thingy, any idea how long it would/could be till I'd get an invite?
Also, I assume it would stop something like Rainmeter from working on your desktop?

like the not one, not two, but three possible ways you could run Audacity without using the start button
Actually that's two different versions and the installer for one of them. I'm a lazy fuck, I hardly even delete my install packages
I love creating shortcuts to people's recycle bin.
then select both, and create shortcuts to those.
2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 recycle bins!
And then delete the actual recycle bin.
you can't :(
True, but you can hide it in a rarely accessed folder, which is nearly the same.
you can move it into a folder? I didn't know that, will try it out, cool :)
another trick I liked was to rename the Recycle Bin "My Documents" and vice versa. I forgot what version of Windows it was that allowed this, current ones don't seem to do that anymore.
also I keep meaning to post this really awesome Spider Jerusalem desktop I GIMPed for my cute little Medion Akoya. but I only have it on the netbook, which is at home now.
Well, I'm pretty sure you can. There is some way to obscure it, I'm sure. But since I only have my own computer to test it on, I'm not sure I can be bothered to try.

that looks like the electric sheep screen saver thing
Good call! You can download the GUI software and explore the probability space visually, like the way Dawkins did evolving line-drawings. I had the idea to create posters out of them for a while, but that requires hacking together some code to output them in CMYK colour space (where black includes 60% magenta, etc), and I haven't gotten back to it.
Fractal flames are awesome.
you should be able to do the CMYK conversion without hacking the code yourself, but with Photoshop or something. Or do you mean outputting /directly/ as CMYK? that might be harder. interesting idea though.
Outputting directly as CMYK. A lot of those images contain faint tendrils in RGB colourspace (e.g. #000110), so you can't just transition smoothly from a rich black into that unless everything starts rich-black and the flame grows on top of that.. such that when converted into RGB colourspace the result stays the same. If that makes sense? I haven't really started on a printing/publishing learning curve yet so my terminology is probably more over the map than usual.
Haven't gone back to it in a few years - the later versions of flam3 might have it as standard now.

I can't find my print screen button/command because I've never really used it on my macbook. So I instead just uploaded the picture that I used for my desktop.
