Title: A blast from the past?
Post by: Rococo Modem Basilisk on October 28, 2008, 03:27:06 PM
I have been reading The Invisibles, and I noticed that a lot of the people posting to the letters column were obviously discordians. Furthermore, a lot of them left in their full addresses. Anyone want to jake some discordians who still use the US Postal System circa 1995? It's only been a little over 10 years, so it's more likely to work than some of the addresses listed in the Principia and other discordian works from that era (California Dept of Furniture and Bedding?)

Sure. What did you have in mind?

btw - keep your eyes peeled for a letter they printed from HAL PHILLIPS. He's a good buddy of mine who got me into the Invisibles. Also a Discordian.

I dunno. Maybe jake them, or recruit them into a gasm. We'd be hard pressed to spread a gasm more effectively than by joining two entirely separate groups of discordians -- the old guard, which was sending jakes by post before most people knew what a modem was, and the new guard, which hands around places like this.

We have the advantage of knowing about some memes that have hit them pretty hard. References to the Invisibles might be a good posture for some psychic kung-fu

Maybe just mail them a blank white pin?

also: a meme bomb, and maybe some reference to the Black Iron Prison

A blank white disc on a pin
A memebomb
A letter saying

"you've been reactivated, agent.  Please proceed to undermine consensual reality"

And perhaps a BIP webpage address at the bottom.

That's really strong. I wonder how many people have the same address as they did 10 years ago though.

For the record, I'm always up for mailing stuff to strangers.

This thread gives me an idea/thought:

Is there any communal P.O. box for the BIP, or the members in the BIP? As in an actual, physical place where stuff can be mailed?

The reason I ask is because in the letters that we send to people, it might be worth it to send a return address that they can mail stuff to. That way, if they have an idea or a project to Mindfuck us, they'll have an open line of snail mail with which to do it.

Imagine: forming a quasi-community-penpal relationship from one group of Discordians to another. It would be fun to send stuff one way, but I think it would be nice to be able to receive some actual snail mail feedback.

I like this idea.  And, anyone including a full address deserves what they get.

Also, a communal email.  Because actually mailing something is a giant pain in the ass in this day and age.

Nope. We're a decentralized, disorganized mass.

The only problem with a single communal email is that actual access could only be trusted to certain people.

Unless you want a repeat of the President Bush spammer debacle.

Yeah.

I guess this place is the most central, now that I think about it.

Good points. I guess the decentralized forum atmosphere will do for responses.

I'm not saying we couldn't put an email down the bottom either, but I would want the password only owned by certain people, and perhaps a thread where we could discuss or post replies

There's no reason whoever mails that stuff can't just make an email account/put down their address and report findings.

Ah, now that's a good idea.

@Enki: what are these folks' addresses? I'll try to draft something tonight and get it out by tomorrow, just as long as I have somewhere to send it.

@anyone else: Are there any pages on here that have links to some good/weird letterhead? It's quite possible that I'm blind, but I haven't been able to find anything in my searches. All that I have at home is a torn mock-Area51 LH that my dog ripped up, and a greeting card that shows a picture of a cat with a candy bucket on its head.

there should be some great LHs on the BIP wiki and in the propaganda depository.

i also have some postcards of fetuses i swiped from an anti-planned-parenthood stand at a recent festival. it would make for good avant garde mailings.

say where and they're mailed.

Manta Obscura: I'll make up a list once I get home and can look at the comics, but there are a lot of really obvious ones.

Also, anyone notice that one can register an email address to be posted to a blogger.com blog? Also, google groups listservs work. You can also add the blog email to a listserv (without even needing to have the blog accept membership), and blogger posts can also be sent to YET ANOTHER email (which can be the listserv if we feel like spamming google out infinitely).

Ah, but if only one person spams the 1995 discordians from the past, how will we annoy them enough to join forces against the order?
