Title: Let's Talk About The Subgenii
Post by: hooplala on November 05, 2008, 04:48:27 PM
Other than the option of paying Ivan Stang money... what is the difference between me an a SubGenius?

Is there a difference?

Yo, I don't think we should talk about this
Come on, why not?
People might misunderstand what we're tryin' to say, you know?
No, but that's a part of life)

Come on

Let's talk about Sub Genii
Let's talk about you and me
Let's talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Let's talk about sects
Let's talk about sects
Let's talk about sects
Let's talk about sects

Let's talk about sects for now to the people at home or in the crowd
It keeps coming up anyhow
Don't decoy, avoid, or make void the topic
Cuz that ain't gonna stop it
Now we talk about sects on the radio and video shows
Many will know anything goes
Let's tell it how it is, and how it could be
How it was, and of course, how it should be
Those who think it's dirty have a choice
Pick up the needle, press pause, or turn the radio off
Will that stop us, Pep? I doubt it
All right then, come on, Spin

Hot to trot, make any man's eyes pop
She use what she got to get whatever she don't got
Fellas drool like fools, but then again they're only human
The chick was a hit because her body was boomin'
Gold, pearls, rubies, crazy diamonds
Nothin' she ever wore was ever common
Her dates heads of state, men of taste
Lawyers, doctors, no one was too great for her to get with
Or even mess with, the Prez she says was next on her list
And believe me, you, it's as good as true
There ain't a man alive that she couldn't get next to
She had it all in the bag so she should have been glad
But she was mad and sad and feelin' bad
Thinkin' about the things that she never had
No love, just sects, followed next with a check and a note
That last night was dope

Let's talk about Sub Genii (sing it)
Let's talk about you and me (sing it, sing it)
Let's talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Let's talk about sects (come on)
Let's talk about sects (do it)
Let's talk about sects (uh-huh)
Let's talk about sects

Ladies, all the ladies, louder now, help me out
Come on, all the ladies - let's talk about sects, all right

(Yo, Pep, I don't think they're gonna play this on the radio
And why not? Everybody has sects
I mean, everybody should be makin' love
Come on, how many guys you know make love?)

to be honest, I've never made it through the Book of the Subgenius.

Too preachy, too smug, too condescending, too profiteering for my taste. After reading 30 pages of cramped text about how awesome SubGenii are -- with barely any explanation as to WHY -- I lost interest. I can see how it would appeal to outsiders with superiority complexes. But it lacked the simple, taoist qualities that initially attracted me to Discordia.

That was my response as well, and I gave it a couple tries . . . that's why I was hoping some of our SubGenii friends would 'splain the appeal to me.

I figured at least YattoDobbs would be able to fill a page with meaningless drivel on the subject . . .

I have the Book of the Subgenius, I've gotten through it and got a few laughs out of it, but nothing enlightening.  :kingmeh:

Try Revelation X.  It's better.  A lot better.

Being preachy, smug, and condescending myself, it's a good fit.  You cant stand on street corners and preach the word of Eris as well as you can the word of "Bob".  Not the I do when I'm not drunk, but still. Also, and this amounts to personal taste, I find SubGenius lit about 6 times funnier than Discordian lit.  (Although, If I hadn't read PD before BotSG, that may not be the case.)

Part of what I like about it is the whole self contradicting Mythos.  Discordia is a set of ideas, lain out rather plainly.  CotSG gets its ideas across in a rather more complicated (convoluted) way.  I'd almost call SubGenii fundamentalist Discordians (although not in the "True Discordians" way at all.)  Rather, it's Discordia for people who would be fundamentalists if they were stupid enough to fall for, say, Xtianity.  If I were Christian, I'm pretty sure I'd be the crazy guy with the 14 foot tall cross outside the theatre screaming condemnation at everybody.  Instead I tell people I'm 1/4 Yeti and smoke a pipe (granted, I smoked a pipe before I'd ever heard of the Church, quit, and recently took it back up again; I dont dont smoke it because I'm a SG.  That would be goofy.)

I really liked the bits about the luck plane, and everything on JHVH-1 gives me silver bullets for use on christians.

I feel that SubGenius stuff has more personal empowerment focus than Discordia, as goofy as that may sound.  I read somewhere (may have been one of the PD intros, cant remember) that SubGenii take the stuff Discordians use to clean their third eyes and smoke it.  I'd call that accurate.

SubGeniusism has more mouth-froth than Discordja.

Hopefully that rambling post helped a little.

This is exactly what I got out of reading the SubGenius book.  I really enjoyed the self-empowerment parts of the BotSG.  The bit about the aliens or whatever coming in 1998 is kind of where I lost it.  To me that part is similar to the parts in the PD where it gets lost in its own joke.  I guess, to me, it kind of lessened the impact of the impactful pieces.  Also, I'm stingy and don't want to send money so I like Discordianism in that it's pretty much a freebie after you buy the book.

I think you may have really hit on it right here.  The simple, Daoist qualities sorta bored me, just like the Dao De Ching kinda bored me.  I like my religions complicated, convoluted, and hard to understand.

The aliens bit?  1. It does get lost in its own jokes, and thats one of the things I like.  I get lost in my own jokes.  2.  We'll see who's joking once 1998 comes around, boyo.

"Fuck you if you cant take a joke".  Its a simple enough statement, but when I first saw it in writing, surrounded by the Stangs ravings, it was like a bomb going off behind my eyes.  It's become my mantra.  The Church has so much more black humor than Discordia, and I've always been a big fan of black humor.

I smell the hippy every time I read something Discordian (old school Discordian, at least, not so much BIP), and a hippy I am not.  SubGenii seem meaner than Discordians on average, and being a dick myself I can really get behind that.

I actually found that stuff an ironic (but far more bitter then discordian) parody of certain cults. There are some really good peices in it TBOTSG, but they mostly come from a very negative place, so it can really depend on a persons state of mind

Yeah, the negativity is core what repelled me.

Most of the time, I think the universe is actually a pretty cool place. It's exciting, dynamic, funny, and awesome. I believe that cabbages are generally well-meaning people until they inherit the curse of Greyface. I get the sense that Subgenii disagree - and they love to fuck over all those people.

Also, humans are flawed beings, and I'm a human so I'm no different. I'm certainly not a hippie by any measure, but I'm generally pretty "I'm okay you're okay". Most Subgenii I've met have been very "I'm okay, you're a piece of shit." I just think it's a waste of energy to be so pissed off and negative all the time. I can get just as much done but with a way lower bloodpressure.

not exactly, its like saying such and such makes you a discordian, however fluff discordians are generally harmless pests (because of the core presentation of discordianism) and the subgenius fluff is... well its generally far more sinister

the thing is, the way the book presents itself is that its ironic self importance (which is exactly the same and as laughable as regular self importance), I think it can be a very positive tool for people with low self confidence, but only inconjuntion with other material... or them using common sense to see where the meaning ends and the joke beggins

Quote from: Faust on November 05, 2008, 07:26:22 PM

the thing is, the way the book presents itself is that its ironic self importance (which is exactly the same and as laughable as regular self importance), I think it can be a very positive tool for people with low self confidence, but only inconjuntion with other material... or them using common sense to see where the meaning ends and the joke beggins

It helped me with that.  I would interject that part of the whole point, though, is that the meaning and the joke can't be easily seperated.

to be honest, I've never made it through the Book of the Subgenius.

Then you both, you and Dr Loki, missed the point.  So do hundreds of bobbies who THINK they got the joke, but laughed at all the wrong parts and are STILL miserable despite their "inclusion" in the "joke".  As "Bob" says, "You may think this is all a joke, but you'll NEVER get the punchline".

All the hate and negativity?  Well, there's two takes on that, and both are equally correct.  Some Subgenii hate humans, and want them all gone.  Some just need to remind themselves how messed up things ARE, so they'll see the pitfalls ahead (those usually just want to enslave the humans).

I find the Discordians and SubG's very similar in their philosophy. The Discordians use absurd memes and models that poke fun of the Newage, Hippie, neoPagan movement, in an effort to provide a philosophical set of ideas. The SubG's use absurd memes and models that poke fun of the Fundamentalist, Money Grubbing, Cult groups, in an effort to provide a philosophical set of ideas.

Discordians are told not to believe anything.
Sub Geniuses are told to COMPLETELY BELIEVE things so absurd that it's unlikely that anyone would truly believe it.
It's two different ways to model "Think For Yourself".

I think both systems attack the Ego. Discordian philosophy slowly erodes the foundations of the Ego like the waves of the ocean against the cliff, while the Sub Geniuses either pump the ego full of helium until it pops, or points and laughs at your ego until it crawls off to hide in shame. I don't think the SubG stuff is negative, its parody... if you take the parody seriously, it sure seems negative.

IMO, I find the BiP to have a more bleak outlook than anything I've read from the SG presses. But, tha's entirely IMO.

Another interesting difference between the SubG and the DIscordians is media. We can collect all the known Discordian works and we'd probably have a few hundred documents, a couple videos, a little audio here and there...

The library of Sub Genius material is HUGE. Audio, Video, Radio Shows, Documents, Pranks Claymation etc etc etc. Not to mention Devivals, X Day, etc etc. Gigs of material, and thats just the stuff that's made it to digital format.

They may have a similar philosophical basis to Discordians, but something tends to push lots of creative output. Maybe its due to having a single Figurehead (Stang) that was so active for so long, versus Discordians that had two founders, one of which went off to live a normal life, the other became a hermit and lost several, if not all, of his marbles. The closest thing Discordianism had to a 'leader' was probably RAW and he was far more interested in his own ideas and philosophies than in maintaining a active national scene as Stang has.

One of my SubG friends said that it was because the Sub Genius is intent on putting his fist in the face of the Norm to find Enlightenment, while the Discordian is busy sticking his fist up his own bum to find Enlightenment.

My personal categorization goes likethis:

The Erisian sees the Cabbage and hopes it will become Human.
The Discordian sees the Cabbage and figures it might become human, or might not... but either way it will be good for some laughs.
The Sub Genius sees that Cabbage and makes Cole Slaw.

And, in some sense... they all see the Cabbage and know that they're looking in a mirror.  :fnord:

I love RAW to death, but he was more often than not latching on to other people's ideas and re-packaging them.

Well, I had meant that in the sense that he was more interested in his own agenda of ideas and philosophies, not that he was popping out completely new and unique ideas.

Besides, I think mosbunal philosophy is "latching on to other people's ideas and re-packaging them" ;-)

You need to watch more South Park.
Basically the joke is "The Simpsons have been around longer than anything/anyone and anything you do, the Simpsons already did"

Yeah, I recognized the reference, but I did not see how it was related to the posts that had been made. It was just sort of a left-field comment to my work-addled brain. But I guess, on second viewing, there is a tangential relation between that statement and the idea of RAW repackaging ideas. Unless I'm missing some other, more esoteric reference here.

That's pretty close to my feelings on it, though I'm probably more of a hippy depending on how you define hippy - I shower regularly, and I gots no hair on my noggin (lots elsewhere tho).

I found BotSB a scream and was very into it for a while, but the PD has more 'staying power' as an overall philosophy for my money; I'm happy to call Discordianism my religion and will cheerfully explain it to folks, which I can't see doing as a Subgenii.  Money was a part of it too - for some reason the focus on money was a weird turn-off to me.  That and a definitive apocalypse day, which now makes BotSG terribly dated IMO.  Discordianism I find more easy-going, and I'm an easy-going kind of guy.  I'm also easy, but that goes along with being a guy.

I've always thought of SubGenii as being to Discordians as Christians are to Jews.  Take from that what you will - I do.

I had no idea there was a differentiation between Erisian and Discordian - I've been using them interchangably.  I believe I shall use that little 'Search' field up thar to further enlighten myself.

I think the Discordians SubGenii that are really really into the "I'm OK, YOu're a piece of Shit" are about like the Discordians that run about saying  LOL23PINEALFNORD... they get the first joke, and miss the underlying one. There's a famous SubG quote "Fuck em, if they can't take a joke." In the last book released, in a rant about SubG's, the new quote is "Fuck em, if they can't tell a joke".

Also, X Day is coming this year... its not dated at all. *looks at calendar...*Oh I mean, X Day is really coming NEXT year... its not dated at all. ;-)

Also, Erisian/Discordian is sometimes the same and sometimes different, depending on the whim of the speaker ;-)

It's not as extravagant as one may expect.

It's just five months named after the Marx Brothers, and seven days named after the Seven Deadly Sins.  Thats pretty much it.  A date would be expressed as such:

And BotSG has much better cynicism. In a contest between hippies and headcases I'll back the headcases every time - Subgenii win

I read the book from cover to cover, almost in one sitting, for whatever reason, it really sucked me in.  For any Devin Townsend fans out there, I highly recommend reading the book while listening to the Biomech CD by Ocean Machine/Devin Townsend.

I think it was Doktor Loki earlier in this thread who said it has more mouth froth than Discordia, and that is very true.  It does appeal to the "mad as hell" streak in me, that Discordia just doesn't ever really tap into.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the whole "Earth is Hell" meme.  I know the thing was written like 30 years ago, but when you read that section, it can just as easily apply to the nonsense that is going on today.  In fact, just thinking about this now is inspiring me to go back and read it again.  If it weren't for the money-bit, and the Alien X-day bit, I probably would've gone more in the SG direction than the PD.

He decided the existing english curriculum sucked, and slipped in Lovecraft to spice things up.  He had a hell of a time explaining the horror of "Pickman's Model" to a class of (supposedly "honors program") freshmen.
I once asked him for a recomendation to college.  It consited of a scrap of cheap notebook paper with the following.

"Dear whatever,
