Last night I killed myself putting beads on the Internet.
Have you tried putting a store up on Etsy? That's where I'm going to base my storefront for Jack of All Threads instead of running my own cart on my website. They don't charge as much as eBay in fees either and the listings are good for 4 months.
Also, once we get over this Christmas insanity I have more commissioned stuff for you that I will pay or trade for again. Since lampworking is period, I'm thinking of a strand of pretties for my Turkish garb.
I like networking with other artists like this. When we get over this fucking recession maybe people will go back to realizing that handmade stuff is the way to go and make us lots of monies!
And adding to Nigel's whoring, this is a piece of her's that I own so those that haven't seen her work can go ooo and ahhh and spend your hard earned cash on this woman's work!

Yayyyy thanks Suu!
I can't remember for sure if that's the same one, but I think you might have the leaf that was published in the 2006 Bead Review, which is a "best of the year" trade publication.
Beads are awesome.
Broke college student, otherwise I would buy.
bidding on the ones that look like gilded malachite.
I have tiny wrists that will make a lovely chunky bracelet.
Yayyyy thank you! :D
heeeh one of these days ill figure out how to get money online and then ill buy some for my friend.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!
Oh wow. Only just looked at your stuff. Very pretty. I was definitely tempted. Perhaps if I had money, I would buy stuffs. I need to get a job...
A not-very-detailed picture of a Nigel bead, to give an idea of size. :)

Will add a close-up when I can find my camera.
Wow, that's huge! I definitely didn't think they were that big...

that's not something the folks around here are used to hearing.
also, Nigel, if I keep doing well at the casino I may hit you up for a nice pendant for ECHGF when we pass through PDX on thursday or friday.
That would fucking ROCK.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. :D
those beads are awesome. I especially love the purple ones on the bottom of the front page of your website
DUDE thank you!
A great side effect of having whored my beads out here (THANK YOU Navkat by the way!) is that now this forum has, for tax purposes, become an "advertising venue" and my monetary contributions are tax-deductible, which means I can afford to donate more. 8)
Also, I can say with authority that Nigel beads are teh awesome... Also, Nigel, look for soon to be PM for special beady requests ;-)
Awww thanks! :)
Nigel -
Can the licorice ones be done in other background colors besides pink?
I love your work, but you have heard that before :lulz:

Shit yeah, I can do just about any color combo you can imagine. :) And thanks!
I just got the beads today, and I have to say that these were far, far better than I expected and far, far better than they look in the picture. They look like a Japanese pond of malachite with gold lilly-pads on top.
I was wondering if I could commission you to do a specific set for me...enough for a bracelet for a little girl?
She loves ladybugs and I was wondering if you could do something that looked kind of ladybug-y...in time for Christmas, possibly?

Thanks again, Nigel & Pinecone. And thanks for the little extra bead you sent!
-jenn
if you do a ladybug bead/beads post the pic, i would have some interest in getting for a gift as well
Thanks Jenn!
I can do ladybugs... whether I can do them by Christmas is just a matter of discipline, of which i have little at the moment, but I will try and if I do manage to do it I will tell you.
SO I GOT A LOVELY SURPRISE IN THE MAIL AND THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

Wow. Those are beautiful!
Thanks LMNO!
I came.
Those Shaman's Garden ones made me sit in a puddle of drool. The colors are FANTASTIC!
I don't have words for how beautiful and AMAZING these are, Nigel. :)
Ye Gods! I really like the level of depth and details you put into the "Shaman's Garden" ones. It's right up there with Josh Simpson's "planets", but has a warmer, more organic feel to it!
Thanks guys!
Josh Simpson is one of my heroes. :)

Seconded.
My wedding anniversary is coming up here soon, and now I think I might know what to get Mrs. Obscura. Save one for me while I scrounge up fund-age, okay Nigel?
OH MY HOLY FUCKSTICKS
Nigel, the Shaman's Garden ones, and the crown ones... Freaking beautiful like WHOA! Seriously, I need to go change my panties.
If I get this fucking transfer at work I will have more money, and I will buy some beads from you to celebrate, methinks. Waaaaant.

Thanks you guys!
I will keep making more, and more, and better ones, so never you fear.
i love the dragonlarva and the garden ones
yeah I like the dragonlarvae best, it's got spirals :D (but they all look great ofcourse)
quite honestly the shaman's garden ones look like a place i'd like to go and just sit.
i could easily stare at them for quite a long time.
(that says a lot with my attention span)
The Shaman's Garden ones are in tribute to my younger brother, who died shortly before his 23rd birthday.

:( I had to think of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p6wd7xqHwU cause the band's called Younger Brother, the song is about someone who passed away (a ribbon on a branch is a pagan tradition for that, i heard) and shaman's garden, well, it's Simon Posford (Shpongle) singing, so.. also it's an incredibly beautiful song, I hope you enjoy it.
It is really pretty... thank you! :)
nice art studio
october 2009 - things that go bump in the night - materials deadline september 26; opens october 2
might be able to make some meme that fits...
Good luck with your showing, Nigel.
I wouldn't mind seeing pics ITT.
Oh hey, I forgot to take pics!
I'm sure someone took some. It was a fantastic opening, with a big turnout and fireworks! A lot of my friends came and everyone had an awesome time. :)
OH and while I was there one of my friends who is an amazing photographer said he wants to take my portrait, and also the gallery owner says he's going to start doing installations next year, and suggested that we move my bedroom in its entirety, with the knives and self-portraits and dildoes and Nixon paintings, into his gallery for a month.
I really don't know if I can do that, but it would be awesome.
I'm still floored by the piece/set I bought from you. Everyone who sees them is impressed with their quality and I've sent two people to your site already.
I already have you in mind for someone's Christmas gift this coming year.
Thank you!

no don't do that! people might mistake you for that blasted tracy emmin woman. recreate your room from cardboard and masking tape = way cooler :)
Good luck at the showing, Nigel! I'm sure you blew everyone away on opening night!

She did that weaving thing, where she had a bed and slept at the museum and was part of the exhibit. The idea behind making my bedroom the installation is that he thinks the combination of items in my bedroom is "art", and I wouldn't actually be part of the exhibit, I'd just be going there to sleep. Because that's my bed, and I don't have another bed.
I have a line on another Nixon painting... a 3x5' close up of his face.
I currently have my eyes on this:

I must say: I've done a little shopping for Lampwork since you educated me on the process and I haven't found anything as intricate or of obvious good-quality as your work.
Nigel you probably know this stuff inside and out, but for anyone interested PBS has been running shows on lamp work and glass blowing lately, i have found the bits i have seen informative and interesting..
Why is it called "lampwork"?
i don't know anything about it.
I think it has to do with using a torch (lamp) to make them. The terms goes way back to the middle ages.
Nigel you make beautiful glass work. If Mrs. Hawk wore jewelery I would definitely buy some.
Thanks!
And Suu is spot-on about the name... girl knows her history, D/N/T. :)
Actually that reminds me, I want to know if you have any spare, basic, mismatched, even not-so-pretty beads laying around I could barter/pay you for. I'm making a Viking Hangarock (apron dress), so to go with it, I need the typical Norse Festoon.
For an idea:

Oh pretty! I just sent all of my extras to the Hope Project, but I should have more soon.

Awesome! They'll go to a good cause.
So I've decided I need to do something funnier with my life, and given my current skillset the most obvious funnier thing I could possibly do is make doll eyes.
The kind that get used in precious OOAK hand-sculpted dolls. You don't know the dolls I'm talking about? Well, let me show you.

Thanks Freeky!
Honestly, just going and LOOKING at my auctions helps me, especially if you add them to your watch list. So even if you're broke, you just did me a favor. :)
I went and looked, but I has no Ebay account.
I might make one later one tonight, though.
have you made any with those new colors that you mentioned getting recently?
I keep getting outbid. :argh!:
Iason your avatar is THE SHIT
Nigel, I'm watching all your beads even though I don't like the colors. Yes, I'm a picky bitch, but if just "watching" helps, well then I'm doing slightly more than nothing ;)
I do like the peach/yellow ones though
