Title: Discourse 4: The symbol of the sword and the nature of war
Post by: Trollax on March 17, 2003, 08:02:55 AM
This is your sword; it represents your self-respect, your honour. How you choose to use it is up to you. Will you wield it to uphold your principles or contradict them? Will you wield it yourself or will you let the hands of others guide you movements, making them clumsy and ineffective? Will you show pride or embarrassment in your sword? Will you take care of it as you would take care of yourself, or will you cast it aside (and therefore yourself) as trivial?

But it is just a sword, and a wooden one at that.

Yes it is just a wooden sword, but just as it symbolises the sword, so to does the sword symbolise your honour.
Long ago people thought that the symbol of the sword was honour itself, that to fight without it was to fight without honour, without purpose. Their only mistake was to confuse the symbol with reality; the questions, symbols, and problems we face mean nothing, do you understand? Nothing. It is how we answer, use, and deal with each of them that matters. Do we face them with bravery and responsibility or do approach them with half a heart and blame?

The sword of today is the soldier's rifle, and the soldier may care for it, maintain it, and know its every intricacy, but his skill alone does not make him a warrior. Without his weapon he is but another belligerent thug, another "warrior" who confuses the symbol with reality, luck with prowess, and conceit with prestige. Pick up your sword soldier and I ask you who wields it? Your Commander or you? Your country or your soul? Who is the master of your destiny in the heat of battle?
It is the ultimate quandary we face, our duty to ourselves versus our duty to the state. How can we chose? How can we not? When the wishes of the state are no-longer concomitant with those of the people how can those decisions be said to be fair and just? How can you say in your heart of hearts that you wield your own weapon?

Pick up your sword soldier and I will show you a warrior, not because I am right or righteous but because the only hands on my sword are my own, the only purpose I serve is my honour, I take pride in my practice and maintenance. Kill me or not; I have won already, because any warrior knows that combat is not the field for honour, the actions of an honourable man are to walk away. Can you do that?

I'd still take him over Daruko.  At least he's not the Heavy Vibes type of troll.

I dunno, at least Darkuo put effort into it. Savage seems to just bump random threads and argue with Roger. 000 could write a php bot to do that ;-)

(No offense to Roger!!)
