Well it's been a while but I decided to make a skirt. I made this vogue one with a yoke because I wanted to see if I could. It looked kinda complicated but I think I pulled it off well. The only thing is I did not alter the pattern and it's WAY too small for me to wear. But I'm sure I can find someone to give it too when it's all done.
I just have to hem it and put on the buttons. I'm thinking of top stitching the seams of the yoke in red though. Any way it was fun!
It's VERY cute!
Thanks!
Very well done! Did you design it or did you use a pattern?
I hate to say it, but while I like the pattern, the color/fabric looks loathesome.
It's a pattern and I used scrap/crap fabric because I really just wanted to see if I could make it. It looked quite complicated and I wanted a challenge. The yoke lining turned out a bit too big though. Oh and I should have slip stitched the yoke to the skirt, but the fabric is tough and it hurt my fingers hand sewing so I was all, "fuck this your going under the machine."
I think it turned out reasonably well still. I have to add the buttons today too.
Ouch @ hand sewing. It did come out nicely.
Will the buttons be red? I think they would look nice in red to match the yoke seams.
Lovely work! Huzzah! Yokes are not easy, you are right!
edited to fix and error--that's what I get for posting at 650 am my time!
Yokes do suck.
In fact, Vogue patterns suck. They're not for the faint of heart!
Nice work!
Thank you guys for the encouraging comments!
I'm at my friends house now brought my machine and we'll be sewing some over here. It should be productive.
yeah Vogue patterns are the suck, but they just look so damn cool! Plus I got a bunch of them at the thrift store... unused :| I no longer wonder why.
Well sewing yesterday at my friends house turned out to be not so productive. She just broke up with her boyfriend so we mostly talked about that...
I did do some top stitching on that skirt but I think I want to add more in green and blue to match the horrendous plaid. :lulz:
But I did start a tunic today/yesterday. This is just the muslin, the one you make first out of scrap fabric so you know how to alter it if need be. I have a whole bolt of this fabric, it's kinda cool in a ZOMG MY EYES!!, sort of way though.
I still have to hem it and sew the sleeves together but I think I'm happy about the collar.

Thanks. I'm making the final one now, I have already started it. If you want this one I'll send it to you, for a small free.

No way! Really? 'Cause hellyeah!
I have a really distressing floor-length linen skirt that would go horrendously with.
NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT ME.
Sounds great, pm me and I ship it out. I just got home from work and really really need to sleep but when I get up I'll post pics of the finished shirt.
Here it is. Remember though this is kinda like a rough draft.
I am seriously stoked about this. Wait until I post pics of the whole outfit! Holy shit.
:D I'll send it Thursday (tomorrow) or Friday cause I'm off those days!
I really need to mention that cause it was a 'rough draft' it's full of small imperfections. They are minor but still I thought I should warn ya. Also that fabric is not what one would call high quality. It's pretty neat anyway.
So here is the final product using this pattern. I finished it today.
And here is another pic with 100% more zit! :x
(http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q363/RaphaellaVonMercer/My%20Art/DSCF1898.jpg)
I bought this fabric at the thrift store, it's pretty fucking cool and I think the camera fails to capture how awesome it really is.
Oh and I thought I should post a pic of my fabulous, simply glamorous, sewing studio. I know EVERYONE will be incredibly jealous of my posh workspace.
Yes, those are Tee Vee fold out tables, eat those hearts out, and no I simply won't consider selling them at any price!
I want your machine.
You don't WANT to see a picture of my studio, it perpetually looks like a bomb hit it.
The machine was my Grandmothers. It's pretty nice when it wants to be, but it's also pretty old by Husqvarna standards. It is in bad need of a tune up and I'm pretty sure if I brought it to JoAnns they would just look at me like I'm crazy.
Sorry to hear about the bomb, but at leas you have room for a studio. Mine is set up right by our front door!
i get a tiny table in the garage thats surrounded by neck breaking obstacles.
:|
100% why i dont sew anymore
Since Richter moved in, I've had to share mine with Mr. Suu's painting materials and extra crap that is evading the basement or a bonfire somehow.
You stole my machine you bitch! :argh!:
I am down with imperfections. It will match the skirt in imperfectness!
The "real" finished shirt looks incredible! W00t! Also, your sewing machine... :fap:
After my husband moved out I put my sewing table in my room where his dresser used to be. 100% improvement!
Just as soon as I finish this pot of coffee I'll be off to the mail stuff place. (Most likely not the post office, they hate us there :| )
I wish I had a separate room to set up in, I would even share it with Tim's massive steel sculptures. He is too attached to our landlordess and our neighbor/ground keeper to even think about moving into a bigger place. We live in a tiny cottage, or mother-in-law thingy.
Thanks for all the machine love guys! It was my grandmother's all time favorite along with her huskylock. She was a career seamstress and I hope to one day be nearly as good as she was.
If I ever get a Husqvarna Viking, I will write in huge letters across it, "ODIN!"
Other than that, my Brother is called "Time Bomb" since the timing is shot to shit and it's in bad need of a tune up I can't afford, and my Singer is called "Tight Wad" since the thread tension tends to get fucked up and I get to pull these huge balls of thread out of the dogs on occasion. Collectively or informally, I refer to them as my "Whirlygigs."
I really really really really really need to spend like $600+ on a machine that will do like 50 stitches and make me julienne fries, I just can't swing it. :(
Please note my Singer is only a year old, and I damn near killed it this year. My Brother has already been fixed once, and I've used it pretty much regularly since 2002, so it's about fried considering it's a cheap machine that just does straights and zigzags. So it really is time to get a new machine. The Brother is GREAT for winding bobbins, because the Singer doesn't STOP when it gets full and will continue to wind thread until you see it exploding. New Singers are pieces of shit. If I can find the right belt, I swear, I am taking my great-grandmothers foot pedal and wrought iron table from my mom and getting that working again.
I has a Husqvarna Viking... it's as old as I am, and you use cogs to change the stitches. I think it has something like 60 different stitches, including hearts and flowers!

Heh I have one of those too! It's black and cast iron. I got the cogs and everything. It was given to my mother by her grandmother :)
Suu I have seen the same Viking as the one I have in the pic on E bay the final bids going at like $200-$300. Also if there are any tech schools near or around your area you should find out where they sell all their old stuff. Orlando Tech unloads at least 30 machines a year here, good ones too. You cold also look into getting a used Juki. My friend bought a Juki hemming machine from Universal Studios for only $300. I hope you find a good one soon.
Yeah, I'll probably end up getting one off of eBay and praying it works. Though we have a very reputable repair dude here in Warwick, RI that works on industrial machines. I could get him to take a look at it before I unleash hell.
I am on a roll it seems! I went to the thrift store and I found a pattern as well as some old polyester fabric. I made this tent style dress, it's pattern is from the 70's. I'm pretty happy about this one.

Ack. Yokes. Yokes are death, especially faced ones. Did you have to hand finish the seam by pressing under the facing and giving it the ol' whipstitch?
Naw, but I did tack it down in a few places. This fabric was pretty easy to work with, other than it being think I had very little trouble with getting it to stay where I wanted it to.
Yokes! I guess I'm a sucker for those fuckers cause now I'm working on a jacket with one as well. :x
The first dress I ever sewed had a yoke, a round one at that...and I had no idea wtf I was doing. :x

Ease stitching makes no sense to me. Make the fucking lining fit the shell or WAYSA?
If it continues to give you problems, trim the lining and say "fuck it".
That's what I'm gonna have to do. I already took the lining off the collar facing and attached that separately, I'll just wing it from there. I may have to walk away from this thing and work on something else for a while so that I don't just tear it to shreds. I can work with ease, but not when the thing to be eased is almost twice the size of the shell. That seriously fucked me up.

I honestly will never understand why, especially when there are pleats in the lining when it's not a hang-loose. WTF? Have you actually tried doing cartridge pleats or hand gathers instead of ease stitching? It's cheating, but it helps.
Is this lining supposed to give body to the garment?
Heh I did cheat the first time with hand gathers and when it turned it right side out it was all poofey, almost as if someone (me) had gathered the collar and lining.
I think the pattern is just fucked. My sewing teacher used to say that all store bought patterns were fucked up, but I just did not believe her. I'm starting to though.
I'm going to sew the collar facing on separately from the jacket lining, then press and under stitch. The under stitching should make it lay right. The only part of the lining that gives the garment shape is the collar facing. So when that's laying right I'll attach the lining any way I can that wont be all fucking poofey! The only part of the jacket that is to be poofey are the sleeves.
cartridge pleats, I had to look them up. I did not get to finish tailoring school. I had to drop out and persue my dream in food service. I'll be going back soon I hope.
 GOOD GOD! Looking into more of this cartridge pleat thing I found this woman who made Snape's costume!! Holy Fuck that looks like a pain in the ass! Her costume seems to have turned out quite well though. I wish I could do that!

Ok, I'm pretty new to sewing, so I've been looking for something relatively easy to get me started. then I came upon this ... project:
http://diyfashion.about.com/od/diyaccessories/ss/SleeveGloves.htm (http://diyfashion.about.com/od/diyaccessories/ss/SleeveGloves.htm)
tl;dr: 1.Cut sleeves off a sweatshirt.
2. Wear
But what to do with those seemingly useless leftover scraps (an entire sleeveless sweater)? FABULOUS EARRINGS:

And scree, the first project our teacher had us work on was an apron. Here is a pattern I found online, but you can pretty much wing it if you want. http://www.jcarolinecreative.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=JC&Screen=APRONINST
Nice earrings btw.
Scree, is that you in that pic?
I have so much scrap fabric I'm thinking of weaving them together to make scarves.

Bwahaha, no. Its from the about.com article.
Speaking of scarves, I'm thinking of trying this idea: http://craftingforcheapskates.blogspot.com/2008/09/hooded-scarf.html All I need to do is wait for the heat to die down so I can go raid the local charity shop.
Cheers for the apron pattern Sanguine, I think I'll have a crack at it as soon as I finish my sock monkey. :)
Holy shit, scree--very cool! I'm always looking for ideas like that!

Thanks Jenne!
And Scree that hooded scarf looks pretty sweet. I'll have to get a bunch of long sleeved shirts from the thrift store next time I go and try out that pattern.
In other news I have put that jacket aside for now until my skill level progresses a bit. I continue to try and make it work, but for now I've started making a simple dress for my mother. I'll post pics soon.
I have here some pics of the muslin for the dress. It's really simple and it's WAY more flattering on than it is laid out on the dummy.
It's not really my style but I know my mom will like it. The final one will be purple.
Interesting neckline, looks very 60s/70s romance revival.
I like the way you put it Suu. I was thinking... "looks kinda like curtains for your boobs." :| really it looks better on.
Is that elastic or gathers?
It's wide elastic, but it could be done with gathers. Those cartridge pleats would look really nice with this I think. I'll have to try that sometime.
Here is the boob curtain dress in action.
I belted it cause it's just a tad too big, but on my mom it should be fine.
I have finished the muslin for a pencil skirt! I'm happy about this one. I messed up the zipper a bit but I hope I'll do better on the actual skirt. I have tons of huge costume zippers from Disney and so I cut one down for this project. On the actual skirt I'll go out and buy an invisible zipper. The green fabric is what I'm thinking of using. I only have about 2 yards of it, so I need to make something small.
HOLLLLY SHIT whenever I see that fabric my brain pops.
I hate zippers. :(
(http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q363/RaphaellaVonMercer/My%20Art/DSCF1966.jpg)
This is my first fashion sketch, I did this with my friend standing by and telling me what/how to draw it. Since then I have forgotten all the basic stuff she told me. I really should brush up.
Niiice. And I HATE zippers--see suu's fread on seamstress speak! Meh to the whole zipper front!
Buttonholes are buttholes, as well.
So I finished the pencil skirt in green. I also made a tunic shirt in purple to go with it. I'll have to wear this outfit and take pics sometime.

It's even got the little back vent and everything. I am extremely happy with this skirt. It looks just like something I would buy at the thrift store, which is what I was going for. Vintage fabric in a classic pattern.
For my next trick I'll make a dress with a short jacket. It's another Vogue pattern and it looks as if it has some easing. :evilmad: I'll give it a go and hopefully learn something so I can finish that other jacket I started.
All this awesome sewing is really making me want to drag my grandmother's old sewing machine out of the hall closet and start making shit. But damn, everything I want to make is way beyond my skill level, which is to say that I haven't made anything more complicated than a quilt, and that was five years ago.
Penguin, that skirt is FABULOUS. I love the fabric. :)
Incredibly cute!

Sewing just seems harder than it is. You have to just start doing it and pretty soon you'll be able to make what ever you want. I'm still learning and improving and making horrible mistakes all the fucking time as well. I have been working on some very basic things so that I can get better. That jacket I tried was above my skill level though, but I'll get it one day. :argh!:
Mostly I want to be able to make my own patterns and stuff, but for that I need to know the how and why things are shaped the way they are and what goes where and all that. So I figure if I work with basic patterns for a while I'll eventually learn these things and go on to make my own.
Really you SHOULD go and get out that old sewing machine! Just remember to make a rough draft first! Nothing sucks more than jacking up some really nice fabric because you made a mistake cutting or something. It takes more time, but it's worth it... trust me.
Here is what broke mah needle. The muslin for the Vogue Dress.

It looks a little weird here because it's too small for the dummy. It's zipper is in the back so it's not zipped up at all here. It looks great on and it fits well so I'm on to making the final garment!! Well, I still have to make a muslin jacket for this dress. But THEN!
This is the fabric I will be working with. The patterned one is for the jacket and the silky one for the dress. Yeah! Thrift store fabric!!

I bought a few more patterns today, those fuckers are like an addiction but I don't know if I'll start another project soon or not. I think the dress and jacket are perhaps too blue. Maybe I should match the white jacket with the blue dress... :?
So much pretty! I'm both impressed and envious of your skillz. :fap:
Oooh, purple blouse plus sexy green shirt and pointyasfuck skerple shoes? FAPALISHUS!

I found them at the thrift store and thought they were just the right amount of ridiculous.
I bought a few more patterns today, those fuckers are like an addiction but I don't know if I'll start another project soon or not. I think the dress and jacket are perhaps too blue. Maybe I should match the white jacket with the blue dress... :?
