i googled a picture and made a pattern from one that looked easy (looked), then added my own touches n shit.
it was a pain in the ass.

i was sure i'd never make another pair, now i'm re-thinking it cause i'm kind of a glutton for punishment

Squid- is the guy that would "commit suicide" by beating myself on the head with the claw end of a hammer while screaming "this really hurts!! why isn't it working!!"

(extra points of you get the joke there)

So I made a wee matryoshka for my russian friend in the delft colors (that I know she loathes), but it's so tiny and cute she won't care.

FLASH MAKE LIFE COLORS ICKY

It has tiny strawberries and everything. It's only 3/4'' tall. Yes I painted the tiny seeds on those berries. Yes I have a headache from squinting. Bitch better like it. Hope it matches her DIOR.
(inside joke, rich mother, buys her expensive handbags, bitches about her putting the thing on the floor, yadda yadda, it's funny...to us)

Here's the latest thing I've been working on.
Mediums-- acrylic, gloss and pumice paste, colored paper, polymer clay

The glossy clear coat is still wet where it looks cloudy. It will dry clear.

Cranked this out today.
Mr Squid soldered in an LED with a battery holder thing and a switch on the back.

This shot is with the flash so you can see the colors and texture

This is with lower light so you can see his lamp
(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f45/Squidoid667/angler2.jpg)

It's 10X10
(that's 25.4 centimeters for eurospags)

Feh, it looks better in person.

I think I'm going to have to have a small Discordian gallery in my house after I move with collections from all of our artsy spags, because that is sheer brilliance and totally gallery worthy in my opinion.

AAAAHHHH!

Squid, I need to find something I have that is awesome so I can trade you for a piece of your fish-related arts. I have a friend who would fall head over heels to get something like the tentacles or the anglerfish.
Title: Re: Squid's unlimited arts n craft n blah blah
Post by: Sir Squid Diddimus on January 11, 2010, 12:38:34 AM
Man, you guys really like it?
Cause I'm looking at it thinking of what I can do to make it look better but I know if I touch it I'm just gonna fuck it up worse.

I thought I had a long canvas cause I was gonna do a jelly fish but I didn't and then I got sad.

I'm learning to work with different mediums for texture and depth, so these are all kind of experiments. I'm hoping to get better.

Thanks for all the compliments :)   it's encouraging.

I liked the tentacles better, it's hard to top those, except to make them BIGGER of course, but seriously those tentacles where sooooo cool.

The fish is also pretty damn sweet, but you may be right if you say the photos don't entirely do it justice.

If you're gonna keep working on it, only thing I can think of is to apply some subtle shading to the body and teeth, but maybe that's the bit I can't see on the photos. you could maybe fire up photoshop and draw shadings on the photo to see how it would look before you risk the original painting? Just some ideas.

I've been experimenting with different mediums and I've never worked with wood before so I thought I'd give it a shot and see what came of it.

This one was inspired by a couple friends of mine. The posture of the ladybot reminds me of the girl cause she's very girlie and feminine and the rabbit depicts her husband cause he was born year of the rabbit and has some weird connection to it.
It's acrylic and paper schematics on wood coated in polyurethane:

And this one is just a painting of a wind up toy Mr Squid has on a small piece of wood. No top finish:

I kind of want #2 & #4. Trade you beads for 'em? Or, OOOOOOOHHHHH

A long time ago I bought a bunch of sterling silver earwires because I thought that I would make jewelry. It turns out, I am not so good at making jewelry. I still have a dozen left. They're kind of tarnished though. Trade you those & a few pairs of extra spacer beads I have hanging around?
Title: Re: Squid's unlimited arts n craft n blah blah

Dude. Your beads cost WAAAAAAAAY more than these things.
Half of my parts are literally a dime a dozen. Like 12 for 10 cents.
That's not a fair trade at all.

I think I'm gonna do one of the craft fair things the ladies do here with this stuff. I'll put together some nice ones and just send them to you guys or something.

Sure, but I'd have to kill the fuse myself since the ones I buy are good ones usually, AFAIK they don't sell blown ones. Or at least I haven't seen any.
Also the lead wires have to be good cause I use those to make the loops out of.
Not a bad idea though.
I just like how they look like little glass tubes/cans. I wish there was a way to get lime green ooze into them.

I made these earlier and I actually LIKE THEM

They took a little while with the hand stitching, french knots suck, but I think it was worth the effort. Ima wear em to work tomorrow.

Those are fucking adorable!

You really should, if you have time, consider making a whole bunch and selling them on Etsy. I think they'd be really popular.

The spares I have are just itty bitty pairs, nothing at all fancy. You might be able to do something cool with them, otherwise they sit in this plastic bucket forever. Plus, what am I going to do with these earwires?

LOVE your pink and yellow calaveras, Squiddy!  And I love love LOVE my fuse jewelry you gave me a while back.  Blows peeps' minds when I wear it--"Are those---FUSES?!?"  :D  I just smile and say, "Hell yes, and isn't it cool?"  Mah fuses is popular!

Lol, after much himming and hawing about being productive I thought I should probably do the Etsy thing.
All my friends said to, so I guess I kinda have to.
Besides I could use some extra shlubbin around money, even if it's just a little.

Nigel- you've convinced me. If they're just gonna sit in a bucket, that makes me think of how sad they must be, sitting there. In a bucket. Alone. Dang it, that's sad.
I'll use em!

I'll make you something pretty and send it to you, then you can send what you think might be a fair exchange of your "bucket leavins" and wire do dads.
Might take me a bit though.

Jenne- glad you like that stuff  :D

I would totally pay you for a couple pairs of your felt earrings...I wish I had something to exchange, but card-making is about the only thing I've tried my hand at decently in the past few years, though I can sew, and I do small decorator projects here and there.  *thinks*  Oh, and I have made jewelry to some some effect as well...let me know!

Whats it made of?

I took a 4X4 canvas, sculpted the tentacles on it with polymer clay, covered it in tiny pieces of torn construction paper, covered that in paint mixed with gloss paste and coated the whole thing in shiny. Theres also paint and pumice paste around where the tentacles come out of the "water"

I'd buy the Anglerfish painting in an instant. The tentacle sculpture too.

Oh shi! That pendant is both awesome and unsettling.

I have my wisdom teeth lying around here somewhere, they're adorable little teardrop shapes and one of them had to get sawed in half (while it was in my face, true story!). I keep telling myself I should make a necklace and earring set with em, but I've had the lazies.

Also, I just read through the rest of this thread for the first time and I'm overwhelmed by it all. Too much pretty in one place.
