QuoteSarah Palin is inarticulate and under-educated... who really has no credentials for any job.

Wow.

Wingnutese to English translation:

"Sarah Palin made me look like a fucking idiot for supporting her so much and so publically.  Goddamn I really hate her now, I look like a moron.  Fuck Palin, fuck her in the ass with a rusty screwdriver, I'll never live this down."

Well, Da6s, the GOP tolerates no failure.  Well, they do, they just wait 10 years and bring you back (see Gingrich, Newt).

Yeah, I'm just surprised they're already doing this. Despite being a fucking psycho, she had the most charisma of any potential candidate they've had since Reagan.

Bullshit.  Her "charisma" consisted of saying what the base wanted to hear.  She was incapable of anything else.  That's why McCain lost the election.

I don't think "charisma" is defined as "over half of the country wanting to cock-slap a bitch."

I'm just speaking of what I saw in the reaction of this red state. All the fundies thought she was the new messiah, the ideal conservative christian candidate.

They even forgave having the knocked up daughter, assuming it was just the typical baptist shotgun wedding scenario.

Many were turning on her before the election - in other words saw the writing on the wall. The fundies like her, but if there was good a turn out in the election she would be a liability

Perhaps charisma was a bad choice of words. What I was really trying to say was "could effectively mobilize the religious right into bombing some abortion clinics and gay clubs better than previous candidates."

I just don't know the word for that.

Yeah, but Reagan got the swing vote, because he was able to appeal to the center and even to a chunk of the left.

Palin is and was nothing more than a revival tent preacher.  She preaches to the converted, and does so in a way that alienates everyone else.

She's the "anti-Reagan".

Fair enough, but I was honestly afraid of her just for the sake most of the standard conservatives I associate on an every day basis with through work/school went from normal nutjobs to almost cult like behavior regarding her.

Example, my boss used to say to me, "I don't understand what you have against Palin, I think she's dreamy". That's fucking scary.

"More real" is a horrible litmus test for political office, by the way.  Sure, liars aren't great either, but lets just imagine that the "real" Sarah Palin is the VP.

Now, imagine the protests over the Iranian election have started, and McCain has incapacitated himself with an Ambien overdose.

Sarah Palin would almost without a doubt order the invasion and/or bombing of Iran, to support the attempts to overthrow the regime.  Causing chaos to spread through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.  Hezbollah retaliating with attacks on Tel Aviv.  Iranians attacking shipping in the Straits of Hormuz.  Iraq exploding into violence.  Etc etc

Being real don't matter squat when your politics make Nero look sensible.

What is with the Neocons wanting to put their political dicks in every Christian fundie going?  Its pathological, it really is.

It makes perfect sense to me.

Government, since the 60's has interfered with Church sanctioned bigotry, prejudice and ignorance. The Christian Wingnuts are ripe for 'anti-government' sentiment, because they see the government interfering with God's Law. If you, as a politician, tell them that you can SAVE them, they'll support you.

Conservative/NeoCon types want control of the government. They think government should stay the hell out of the way. Conservative ideology works for a subset of a given population. If you have the capital you can make money. If you have the influence you can get ahead. However, there aren't enough People to get a system like that elected, so you have to find other people that THINK you will help them. Enter the Christians.

At this point, I think it obvious that the GOP doesn't really care about gays/abortion etc. Having Bush and Co in power for eight years cemented that in my mind. There wasn't even a serious move to push out Roe v Wade or or have a Constitutional Amendment on Marriage. No, there was some lip service, a couple speeches and that was about it. They love Palin and Huckabee and all the rest, because they will get ballots in boxes. If our choice were between a godless liberal and a godless conservative, the Christians would probably stay home and await the Rapture.

I hate to say it but the left gets a big "I TOLD YOU SO" on this one.

My opinions on Sarah Palin prior to this shitfuck nonsense: "She seems like a smart lady with her heart in the right place. I will never vote for her because of her extreme, anti-feminist, Christian rhetoric but I think she's a smart, capable candidate who might be worth something if she ever cools down off that shit."

My opinion now: "You IDIOT. How is it "serving Alaska" if you take away their right to their chosen elected official?!? Have you no sense of responsibility to the people who voted you in?"

She showed her true colours as a batshit insane, stir-crazy mayor of Mooseville. Only "Mooseville" is a magickal place in her head where bridges to nowhere reach straight up into the heavens like rainbows and Jesus himself slides down from the sky and tells her that she has a Higher Purpose.

That's a good way of putting it.
The Republican party is not going to get any more support from the middle until they get it through their heads. This is not about "separation of church and state," it's about "we think your magical beliefs about a guy in the sky telling me I can't marry a girl or take drugs makes you a questionable character for public leadership."

that only works on high voter turn out...
when the fundies are mobilized they have proven they could vote in bulk.
They were never that shit over McCain, and didn't reach the over 80% evangelical vote that they did for bush

But voter turn out goes down.. its all matter of numbers. And one large group giving over 80% for one party maybe just enough

A new study showed that the number of Southern Baptists will be less than half what it is now in roughly 40 years. That's a huge chunk of their voting bloc right there. The Republican party will either implode with a whimper or find a way to appeal to Hispanics.

That study is shit.

It assumes that recruitment will stay steady, when anyone old enough to remember the 80s knows these things operate in cycles.

This is what I get for not RTFA.  It was the Southern Baptists themselves that did the study.

http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld/2009/06/25/southern-baptists-and-republicans-old-white-and-in-decline/

QuoteIts research arm LifeWay Research released the following projections this week at the convention's annual meeting in Kentucky:  it said its numbers would fall nearly 50 percent by 2050 "unless the aging and predominantly white denomination reverses a 50-year trend and does more to strengthen evangelism, reach immigrants, and develop a broader ethnic base."

"Using U.S. Census projected population figures, SBC membership could fall from a peak of 6 percent of the American population in the late 1980s to 2 percent in 2050," said LifeWay director Ed Stetzer.

"Using U.S. Census projected population figures, SBC membership could fall from a peak of 6 percent of the American population in the late 1980s to 2 percent in 2050," said LifeWay director Ed Stetzer.

The SBC in 1951 enjoyed robust annual growth of four percent and still had two percent in the early 1970s but in recent years it has been falling about 0.6 percent per year.

A new study showed that the number of Southern Baptists will be less than half what it is now in roughly 40 years. That's a huge chunk of their voting bloc right there. The Republican party will either implode with a whimper or find a way to appeal to Hispanics.

That's because 70% of southern baptists will be dead within the next 20 years, along with almost all the other baby boomers.

Oh, there's no shortage of Baptists in the generation following the boomers (ie, mine).

That's surprising, considering the looney bin of a southern baptist convention church I was "raised" in maintained maybe 3 of the younger members through the years. All the others got smart, or got arrested.

Illinois breeds the fuckers.  And they stay in the church, and are even more annoying than their parents.

This is true. I went back to my hometown in Illinois this weekend. The Southern Baptist church there was slowly enveloping an entire city block. Scary stuff.  :scared:

You wouldn't be talking about Calvary Baptist Church in Naperville, would you?

Nope. I grew up much much further south and east. The Baptists are slowly taking over the entire state. I'm pretty sure they already own everything south of 70.
