Title: Five deadly sci-fi gadgets you can make at home
Post by: Cain on July 08, 2009, 01:11:18 AM
I <3 Cracked.com

http://www.cracked.com/article_17127_5-deadly-sci-fi-gadgets-you-can-build-at-home.html

It's 2009. Where are our jetpacks? And laser guns? It seems like the cool stuff of sci-fi movies is now the stuff of the billion-dollar military programs, and equally unavailable to us common folk. What the hell?

Well, if you're tired of waiting for this stuff to turn up on store shelves, it turns out a whole lot of these working sci-fi staples can be built on your living room floor. All it takes is some off-the-shelf parts, a little creativity and a complete disregard for your own safety.

Cute list  :)

No pulse jets, quarter shrinkers, or home brew arc welding rigs though

I wonder what would happen if you used a blu ray diode.

For the amount of money you spent on a blue ray player you'd be better off just buying a high powered laser pointer, unless of course you can just get the diode through a spare parts company.

it looks 100x more fucking awesome.

although, you 'probly wanna save that for making a lightsabre.

turns out if you use a cdr drive, the beam is invisible. oh yeah. invisible death ray.

Laser beams are inherently invisible, just like you can't see the actual beam of a flashlight unless you're shining it through fog or smoke.

Light in general isn't so much invisible, more like it's going by too fast to be seen.  Like your fog / smoke example, we only see what gets reflected off objects and into our eyes.

Damn, I should probably explain my ideas better, because this seems to happen with great frequency.

This thread is making my day. Not only was the article enlightening, but these puns are brilliant as well.
