Okay, so I recently discovered Discordianism and I am genuinely intrigued by all that it entails. However, I'm having a hard time figuring out what is required reading and what is simply suggested reading. I'm just about finished with the Illuminatus! Trilogy, but I came under the impression that these books are not regarded as significant sources of Discordian "doctrine." Also, reading on a computer really pisses me off and fucks up my back, so how much of the required reading comes printed on old fashioned paper? Thanks in advance. Unless you are a prick.

you are a prick.
Thanks, you seem to be pre-qualified. I'm not sure that even if there was such a thing as a required reading list, that it could ever be agreed upon. You may be given suggestions, and you're free to follow or ignore them as you wish. You're also free to consider yourself a Discordian at any point. Whether or not other people who consider themselves Discordian would agree, is another matter. Of course, you're free to consider yourself a Discordian who doesn't give a shit what anyone else thinks you should think about yourself. And there isn't really a correct answer.
I would say the only required reading is the Principia Discordia and Illuminatus! There are lots of other things you could read, but those two pretty much cover the essentials, and everything else is merely supplementary by comparison.
And naturally, both of those are available in dead-tree format, though you may have to work hard at finding them.
It's all suggested reading.
There is no doctrine.
And all documents can be printed out.
That said...
Principia Discordia (so you can get the old jokes out of the way)
Prometheus Rising and Quantum Psychology
The Black Iron Prison (http://www.blackironprison.com/index.php?title=Black_Iron_Prison_pamphlets)
Godel Escher Bach
Naked Lunch
Listen, Little Man!
The Book of Lies
The Mass Psychology of Facism
For starters...
I like this place...
Is the Principia Discordia really that hard to find in the deceased plant-matter incarnation? Like, for instance, I couldn't find one at a Waldenbooks or anything? Also, is there a place where I can print really long documents for free without going to a library?
You'd probably get the worst incarnation of it, the Steve Jackson version. (shudder).
You should be able to get the PD off Amazon, but the current publisher is in the UK, so it might take a little longer for it to arrive.
Illuminatus, AFAIK, is out of print entirely, so that would be the harder one, IMO. But of course you've said you've almost finished it, so I'm going to guess that isn't exactly a problem.

See, this is the stuff I need to know. What is the preferred version and what is the real difference? Need input...
Hey, does Synaptyx still offer that spiffy hardcover version?
Also, the "preferred" version is usually the "free" version...

I hope so. I bought one at the start of 2008, and its a pretty snazzy edition.
Plus it has a quote from me on the back....
Heh. Do you have a link to give to our new friend?
http://poee.co.uk/site/poee-shop-mainmenu-57/poee-at-amazon-mainmenu-52.html
That should do the trick.
did that hardback publisher issue ever get resolved?
also :lulz: at BIP wiki only have 1 active link and 3 dead ones
Yeah, that does kind of suck. Where the hell did they all go?
illuminatus is oop?
they had a copy at barnesandnobles when i went there yesterday...
almost picked it up to replace the second one i've lost....
Also, the Steve Jackson copy is manageable, Just avoid all the crap that he wrote and most of the stuff his fan-bois contributed. There actually were a couple pieces that weren't that bad.
Not required reading:
-The Invisibles (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=12508.0), a comic series by Grant Morrison. It stars a bunch of Discordians. The Wachowski brothers were inspired by Morrison, who wrote the series as a big hypersigil. The Matrix is based pretty closely on the themes in the Invisibles.
If you only read the Principia, you'll still be able to communicate with other Discordians. The Principia leads dedicated seekers down a number of interesting paths...
-Neurolinguistic programming
-Maybelogic
-the occult (and skepticism about it)
-intellectual property law
-conspiracy theory
-consciousness
-etc etc etc
again, none of it is required, but the more about Discordia you read, the more these themes keep coming up

they went down when vex's ftp went down, sometime in february
I was wondering if anyone else would fix the links.
luckily, nobody even noticed
Yeah, I wasn't really keeping track of what was linked to where and what went down when and such.
Hey, thanks a lot guys. When I found out that all this was "real" I immediately attempted to look something up and was bombarded with so much weird shit that I couldn't process it all with my meager thinking apparatus. And for the record, I agree: free is preferred. But, when it comes to me and books, I need a physical copy. Especially old ones;I like to smell 'em.
Considering what we do to some of those books, that's pretty gross.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, the only thing on my list not in print is the Black Iron Prison because, well, we wrote it. But you can get it as a snazzy PDF file to print, fold and staple together prior to reading.
So much material... Freaking loosing it...
Welcome to Discordia. Please keep all limbs inside the car at all times.

I can also recommend the supplemental texts that Kerry Thornley (Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst wrote) for a peak into the mind of one of the founders:
Zenarchy papers [http://www.mindcontrolforums.com/hambone/zenarchy.html]
The Dreadlock Recollections [http://www.ovo127.com/zines/ovo017.html]

Damn, reading it in dead tree format, with highlighting, scribbled notes etc is hard enough... trying it via PDF may make my brain implode.

This is the one to avoid at all costs:

I think you'll find it's not by Seuss.
well shitfucks.
it's just his publisher.
I have the Steve Jackson one too I think its great. Is there a better one?
But I know its not "Discordia: Hail the Goddess of Chaos and Confusion" they really messed it up. They added stuff and made it cost more.
Also check http://urbandictionary.com and http://uncyclopedia.org you can learn a lot about Discordia there!
Here's the prices on Amazon for the PD without pictures
3 new from $7.60 3 used from $25.60

Don't forget The Book of the Subgenius its by The Good Reverend Roger and its fantastic!

Oooh, nice. What all is in that one?
And why does no one ever mention the Summa Discordia? I like it almost as much as the PD.
1. Fooled by Randomness by Nicholas Taleb (or Black Swan by same author. Talks about the same things, I liked the first better)
2. Transmetropolitan is a comic. IMO it's better at discordianism than Inviisbles cause the latter is also more about random occult transdimensional weirdness, and Transmet is simply pretty much the most fucking cool cyberpunk gonzo journalism story EVAR. I have no idea how difficult it is to get in dead tree format, but you can get the entire series off torrent (isohunt.com) easily.
3. maybe a bit odd to suggest in a list of books, but register at POEE.co.uk where you can read (nearly) all of Roger's essays, rants and stories. They're nicely ordered in their own subforum. They make for real good (and funny) reading, and taught me a lot about discordian (/subgenius) stuff that may be based on "the literature", but is in fact the result of one man (Raingod) thinking for himself, one way of living discordianism.

Discordia Totalis
Description: A compilation of 5 great works of Discordia, the Principia Discordia, The Metaclysmia Discordia,
The Summa Discordia, The Book Of Eris, Zenarchy & The Zenarchist Cookbook, as an addendum I have also added the Apocrypha Discordia. All the works are (K) Kopyleft, All Rights Reversed... and found publically online. Eris wouldn't have it any other way.

i liked it cause the pdf was free and the hardcover appears to be at cost.
plus hurts like the dickens if you hit someone with it. too many meh
only dislike of the book is the number of blank pages which at this stage are almost counter productive as it weakens the binding a bit if you have alot
i wanna cut pages out but a friend has it under their protection
he even posted here once which i think how i found this place

those are for you to draw on silly
for lulu printing the spine is actually pretty strong but im sure it would last alot longer with say half of em
as i can draw on 20 pages just as easily as i can 40.

Took me a while to get approved (?!) and find them, but thanks for the pointer!
That was probably my fault.
Cain,
absentee slumlord's enforcer for TWO Discordian sites.
Oddly enough, it was me who approved fictionpuss at POEE.
I felt compelled to Do The Right Thing, as I'll be meating Syn in 20 days, and he might eat me or set his wife on me or something.
Yeah, I meant it was my fault he wasn't approved before.
Yeah, I got that.
Just thought it was funny that it was me who approved him. It was so tempting to reject him, just for the hell of it.
But I'm a nice guy, honest.
I personally like the unabridged audio version of Illuminatus.
LMNO, Quantum Psychology? So it's still worth reading after Prometheus Rising?
RAW designed Quantum Psychology to be a group workbook, and so expands on a lot of the experiments that you can try to test your boundaries in the Circuits. Many of the exercises work best in a group setting, tho. Much of the language has been re-thought out, and the presentation has changed a bit. I still recommend reading both to people who ask, I see them as companion books.
Thank you, Tel...i suppose I'll give it a try, then :) .

i didnt listen the entire audio book, but I got pretty far in it, and I thought it was pretty good. helped to have read the book twice, though.
and personally, i found QP to be at least as interesting as PR. the good thing about it is that RAW only uses Quantum as an
analogy for his "maybe" psychology ideas, and never really tries to make the case that any weird phenomenon is "because of quantum" (except for his descriptions of actual quantum phenomena of course), but are more like "really twisted in a similar way that quantum is twisted" and perhaps "isnt it odd that we seem to discover these things in the same century" kind of.

Very cool. I'm halfway through the first chapter and am not quite sure why it's taken me so long since I was raving like hell about how cool PR was. I might like to even begin a thread outlining some of my experiences with the exercises. I'll see how it goes, I suppose.
Wow. This thread is still going?
So, you mean to tell me that there is actually a review process for approval here? I thought that was like a joke of some sort.
Yes.
If the review process says you are a spambot, you don't get approved. We're so elitist and exclusive like that.
