QuoteGurdjieff claimed that people do not perceive reality, as they are not conscious of themselves, but live in a state of hypnotic "waking sleep".
"Man lives his life in sleep, and in sleep he dies." Gurdjieff taught that each person perceived things from a completely subjective perspective. Gurdjieff stated that maleficent events such as wars and so on could not possibly take place if people were more awake. He asserted that people in their typical state function as unconscious automatons, but that a man can wake up and experience life more fully.
From what I'm reading, Discordianism = Gurdjieff + Absurdity.
RAW seemed to think Gurdjieff was on to a few things. I think he did a chart tying Gurdjieff's model to Leary's model in Prometheus Rising.
I know his name is really hard to pronounce when drunk.
Well, Gurdjieff seems to have a "three brains" model, emotional, physical, and intellectual... He then proposed ways to "wake them up".
So, we could take the 8-circuit model and tweak it to fit. But that can get Lo5 if you're not careful.

Bob already did get LOL05 :lulz:

Yeah, I remember that from PR, the charts comparing different models of consciousness.
I have "beelzebub's tales to his grandson" in my bookshelf but I have never gotten very far. It's pretty dense reading, allegorical like hell for 1300 pages. I liked the foreword though.
Haven't studied Gurdjieff yet...or Ouspensky.
It's on my 'to do' list.
I've read some. And listened to the music...Didn't really get that into the music.
Gurdjieff = AWESOME
I know bits and pieces of this Discordian Saint.
He'd advocate a constant affirmation of "I AM" over and over (apparently a Sufi thing?).
He'd have these incredibly elaborate dinner parties and start fucking with one of his disciples, then encourage everyone else to gang up on insulting the disciple. When the disciple was thoroughly in pain Gurdjieff would stop and point out that if the disciple was "sleeping" or not aware of his emotions.
The anecdotes are awesome.
LMNO, I have a three (i think three) part video series on Gurdjieff and his Fourth Way that I'll be happy to upload tonight if you'd like.
Yeah, hit me up.
i read "beelzebub's tales to his grandson" a long time ago i thought it was a good read at the time and would recommend it,
i would like to see the 4 way video series as well...
The enneagram is a trippy psychological model that he was a main part of.
They say Gurdjieff was an 8 on the enneagram.
Here's a very clear cut Q&A with P.D. Ouspenski http://anonym.to/http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UMYY0L7P
It's an easier read, more "just the basic facts" than 'Tales' is...
The vids are uploading and I'm gonna let that run while i sleep...post in the morn.

thanks i have watched #1 and am down loading the third one now
sweet! it's more biographical than it is about The Fourth Way but I got something out of it. :)
the first one is like a pbs travel show "following gurdjieff through Egypt",
it had a few good 4th way tidbits and lots of Egyptology, and was interesting enough to get me to start down loading the rest,
if the first one is representative of the others i will give it a thumbs up..
I'm about to watch the 3rd one. He goes into the Fourth Way a little bit more and sort highlights the relationship between Gurdjieff and Ouspenski and other disciples.
I haven't started 'em yet, will probably do so tomorrow.
