Well shit :(
I really hate to say I told ya so but... HIV is a slippery asshole that can evolve faster than we can set traps for it. I honestly don't think that we will ever be able to have a vaccine for it.
The closest I think we'll ever get is post infection antivirals that are hand selected per patient and attack only the specific virus type found in that person.

Sure there is, it's called a fucking condom.

Sigh. I can't agree with this. I mean, yes, a condom is a preventative measure, but it's not able to achieve what a vaccine would achieve.

Condoms break.
You're a fool if you don't use one, but they aren't a complete answer.
Condoms don't, for instance, prevent AIDS in a child born to a mother with HIV.
I have lost a lot of friends to AIDS, and it's a kind of sensitive subject for me. Because people make mistakes, and most of the time they don't deserve to die of them. I mean, I am a compulsive tester and condom-user, but my friend Shawn died of AIDS in the early 90's because her supposedly monogamous boyfriend gave it to her and he fucking knew he had it. I lost four other friends to it before the turn of the millennium, and in almost every case it was because they were young and naive and made mistakes. A vaccine would protect people like them... people like everyone. It's not like they deserve to be dead because they were foolhardy.
ouch.
