Title: The Future™ is here.
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on November 02, 2009, 07:41:28 PM
The Future™ is here.  We have things they didn't even DREAM of, in my grandfather's generation, and my parents' generation didn't do much better.  In older science fiction (Classic Star Trek), the communicators were cell phones with less capabilities (You didn't see Kirk texting, did you?)...hell, they even had a switchboard operator (Lt Uhuru).

We now have televisions for cars, as well as navigation computers.  We have robocops that don't look as cool as the old shows, but are far more effective (good luck beating that ticket, Bunky).  The internet was dangerous, but we fixed it with Twitter, and now it's brain-smashing fun for the whole family.

We have all this wonderful stuff, and it occurs to me that we don't need you anymore.  No, you're outmoded, and you require too many resources that could be put to better use.  You are the buggy whip maker, the elevator operator, the Lt Uhuru of the modern age.  We don't even design cities with you in mind, these days.  Look around, cities are designed for vehicles, not people.  Soon, even that will be largely unnecessary.

Yes, the sad fact is, your services are no longer required.  We make everything overseas, now, because you cost too much, what with your demands for "a living wage" and "safe work environments".  We don't even use American ships to cart it back over here, in fact I challenge you to find any American-flagged cargo ships, period.  We can get all the goodies back over here dirt cheap, and that means profit.

I can't help thinking we've missed something in there somewhere, but whatever it is, we will find the solution.  It just won't involve you, because your demands are unreasonable.

Or Kill Me.

Needs more hate. I totally didn't buy the "Or Kill Me."

Honestly, I think you phoned it in.

Are you out-sourcing your rants?

my criticism is shipped fresh from Malaysia

The buggy whip maker was screwed, sure, but he just didn't WANT to adapt.  He couldn't stand seeing his wares peddled to the "pony play" crowd.

He had all the wrong values, Richter.  He didn't understand "now" and "new" and he probably didn't have many followers on Twitter.  I mean, have you seen that guy's Facebook?  Yeah, neither have I.

The moral here is: adapt, deal with perverts, or die.  There are no other options.

There's no need. Soon even the rants will be written by computer.

Or Unplug Me.

Okay, I have no reason to doubt that, I suppose.

(no idea why they always mess that up, but just as the French pluralize "information" as "informations", these are tell-tale signs)

He's Swiss, so that makes sense.

Ooh, that means he could mispluralize "informations" as well! :D

Of course we're still needed Roger, well at least for the moment. Without people around who is going to buy the latest gadgets, or watch the latest summer blockbuster. Computers are way too smart to do that.

My friend asked me the other day, if there was any technology that really changed our lives. And I told him, of course there is. Cell phones mean we now don't have to think ahead of time, we just change our plans whenever the fuck we want and tell the relevant people about them. Cells also allow us to interrupt whoever we want, to tell them some inane detail that probably could have waited.

The internet has changed our lives too, I can now find information on any topic, no matter how unimportant it is. I can also find people as fucked up as I am and talk to them all over the world. Plus, how else would I be able to find out what a fourteen year old kid thinks about copyright laws?

But really, has technology really changed us that much. Sure we have become more like jerks, and technology has made it easier to be a jerk. But maybe we were already happening that way. We invented the internet so it would be easier to piss other people off and fill our depraved fantasies. We invented cell phones so we had more ways of interrupting people, and ignoring people face to face.

Sure technology has some amazing applications and potential, but people are idiots.

Ah, that's what I was missing.  Oh, well, the Free Market™ will provide the solution.

I had an old man tell me once what was involved in making a buggy whip, it took days the way he did it.
I guess it's like art: unnecessary, and if you want to be compensated for the time you put into it, you'd better have a Pretty Big Name.
Why bother, people will find crappy prints to hang over the couch at WalMart and cheap S&M stuff online.
