yes, afaik the preferred method of dealing with damage such as this is to clean the wound with water, then apply Iodine and bandages. Iodine so it doesn't accidentally infect or inflames, which is a risk because of the larger surface area.

And then it usually takes two years for the scars to stop being visible, with me, for some reason.

my way was get fuzz stuck in it, heal over the fuzz, get infected, have my knees turn green, and randomly start bleeding for weeks when i bent my knees. IT WAS AWESUM

I folded up a paper towel and secured it over the wound with masking tape so I could continue playing Dark Age of Camelot, which incidentally was the reason for the bleeding because I was playing with my new knife at the same time and not giving it quite the attention it deserved. Fifteen was a good age for EoC.
