"Darkier and edgier", "mature" and "complex" are not synonyms of "includes more sex".

Weeeell buddy, what if its black granny high level bondage pr0n, huh, HUH?
News at Ten would be vastly improved by the addition of some facial cumshots.
Just sayin..
I agree with the last two posts ITT.
No, it's just something of a theme I am seeing. For example, the hilarious bad slashfic of Doctor Who that was called Torchwood was marketed as a "darker and edgier" take on Doctor Who. The equally hilariously bad Stargate: Universe was not only described as "darker and edgier" but also "cerebral". Both were not especially complex, or morally ambiguous or shocking, but did include a lot of sexual references and scenes implying it.
I don't mind sex on teh TV, but lets at least be honest, and call it fanservice or something.
They did seem to be more economic with their use of lighting in Torchwood, perhaps that's what is meant by "darker".
Protip: Sex scenes should be well lit with liberal use of macro lense
. . . well Torchwood wouldn't have to be wildly "out there" to be darker than Dr Who which is still essentially a kids programme
MMIX: remembers discussing the first ep of Dr Who [you know - Wm Hartnell] over school lunch
so are you advocating for more actual sex in serial sci-fi, or less teasing in the teasers, or maybe more flashlights like on CSI????
I am proposing accurate descriptions. I like shows that pull off dark and edgy accurately, as there are so few.
If I wanted teh sexy, I can get it free off the internet.
Everyone who likes sex in Sci fi should watch lexx, its borderline porn, an attack on sci-fi in general and has a really good sense of humor.
yeah this whole "darker and edgier" shtick is really starting to grind. one show starts it and then they all have to follow. its like watching a formation aerobatic team all dive relentlesssly into the runway one after the other . . .

its going that way with films too. Escapism in fiction was down when the money was good. Its especially obvious in comic book films ever since the commercial success of Sin city.
Now that people aren't as well off I am hoping for and expecting a return to fantastical hope filled shows. "gritty" really becomes cliche after a while
People consider Sin City "gritty"?

The gamers I know online and in real life consider sin city gritty and film noir. :(

I'd say that depends on the sex, wouldn't you?

Fuck you, Torchwood is awesome :argh!:
I will agree its not exactly darker or edgier than Dr Who (except Children of Earth) or really related at all aside from being a spinoff.
