Title: Discordian Dictionary - Dicsordinary
Post by: NotPublished on January 29, 2010, 02:21:07 AM
Well, I am in the process of writing up a plan for what I will call the "Dicsordinary" for now. I was going to make it two weeks ago, but life is full of nasty little suprises which leave you little time to scratch your own ass :(

Essentially, I am going to imitate urbandictionary and dictionary.com, and well ... considering people disagree with each other over the terms of words all the time, why not add another reason to disagree with the same word?

The way it goes
 - Users can create Word entries
 - For each entry any user is allowed to add their own definition based on verb, noun, (Or any of those other ones I forget ha) and people can vote for the word whether for it to go 'higher' or 'lower' which will denote its position in the 1. 2.

Since I am sucky at explanations I will try an example

So for example

User A makes the word Spotnick

User B writes a noun definition for Spotnick being "A waste of time"
and user C will write another noun definition for Spotnick being "My mum thinks I'm cool"

So it will display like this

Spotnick
  noun
    1. A waste of time
    2. My mum thinks I'm cool

And you will be able to submit a vote on the order of the words, so it can raise or lower.

ANYHOW is this a Yay or Nay idea?

I believe you have reinvented urbandictionary.com

Did it occur it was intentionally Dicsordinary? I did write it out twice :(

it's not a bad idea, it's just that

1- sometimes it's more fun to figure out the slang on your own
2- how many slang words do we have? I can't imagine there are more than 20 made-up words or abbreviations native to this place. Not sure that a bigass database is needed.

HOWEVER:

Definitely run with that idea of creating software which assists somehow in the natural selection of ideas and activities!
If you're hunting around for something cool to code, I can probably dig something up

My poor discarded featus never had a chance to breath :(:( Your all monsters! (I wasn't that keen on the idea myself )

Hmm ...... How about a random insult generator? Or a random back-story generator to help with Trolling? :D

I like you, NotPublished, so I will submit the word "Spotnick."

Also, random insult generator would be awesome as well as useful.

The creative process often has casualties. Its a dangerous job.

One project waiting for a coder is the Robotic High Weirdness By Mail Project,

thread: http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=20922.0

the tl;dr version of the idea though is:

The bot's job is to send weirdness by mail to random strangers.

Once every 24 hours or so, the bot would check a paypal account to see if there's 50cents in it. If there is, it will randomly pick an address from a list, then mail that person a randomized postcard using postful (http://www.postful.com/).

People from the web can donate money to this fund, or submit addresses which may or may not randomly get mail.

the idea is that the target will get a sort of surreal, unique post card with no explanation, no answer to the great question "WTF?"

another thing I'm looking for is a ning coder. If you can figure your way out around OpenSocial (http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/), I would be dying for your help to design stuff for the Dreaming LARP website (http://dreamings.ning.com).

Hah!  The ministry of automated abnormality!

ETA:  Yeah, I tried the PD dictionary a while ago, and it was pretty close to complete.  I deleted it though, because it kind of ruined the fun.

I'll look into both projects! I Have a few ideas to test with PayPAL so I'll experiment with that :) I love the Auto-Bot project it sounds hilarious!

Yeah.  It's more fun to say IWDYAFY and not be understood by the target.

Oh epic! the PayPAL SDK has a function called GetBalance(), I'm going to test that :)

edit : and it totally works!!

GetBalance - 331.54 AUD (This is only a sandbox account)

You can also make Auto-Payments using the API :):)

On a related  note, this page is the ONLY result Google has for "IWDYAFY".   :lulz:
