Title: Introducing: The Spider Project
Post by: LMNO on February 01, 2010, 04:40:07 PM
So, I put this up here because more people read this subforum than "Bring and Brag".

I feel it has come time to reveal something I have been working on for a while now.

I give you The Spider Project (http://www.reverbnation.com/thespiderproject).

Simply put, I have been putting the "Hey LMNO" thread to music.  Yes, I got permission from the various authors to use their work.

Currently, I have 5 pieces up at the site, with more to come.  I felt that now would be the time to present it, as it's gotten enough under its belt to offer some momentum.  Also, I contacted a few people behind the scenes a few months ago, and I wanted to light a fire under their feet (you know who you are, no blame).

Anyway, there are several eventual goals to all this... hopefully, I can work it into a multimedia affair, and actually release it in some fashion.

There may be some final tweaks to the songs currently uploaded, which is why they are currently "stream only".  When I polish them up, they will be available for download.

Updates as I finish them.

PS – if a mod feels a desperate need to move this to "Bring and Brag", that's cool with me.  I just wanted the largest amount of people to know about it initially.

I really prefer to download tracks instead of stream. i usually even do it with Youtube videos, if they're somewhat good [got a Python script for that]. Something about the possibility of randomly pausing and buffering and that I need to keep a resource intensive website open for it. Um, anyway, I know I will enjoy these tracks [cause so far I enjoyed all your stuff], can I wait until they become available for download or is that planned for an undetermined point in time and should I better just get over myself and check the streams?

Oh, I realized I didn't post the lyrics to the song I wrote about the thread:

I hear the spiders in the wall
I hear them coming down the hall
They push me down into my chair
I try to pretend they aren't there

They're turning on the damn TV
They're pushing their pills into me
They want to give me what I lack
They're telling me I should relax

Oh, Spiders

The spiders get inside my brain
Said they could take away the pain
No need to worry or complain
And every day will be the same

Spiders are crawling on my skin
And they know just where I've been
Telling me that it's a sin
And then they sink their teeth right in

They're in the Bottle
They're on the TV
They're on the Radio
They're living inside of me

They wrap me up and hold me tight
Another drink to make it through the night
There's just no reason left to fight
The spiders take another bite

The spiders packed my dreams away
Now it's just another day
Don't want to go, but I can't stay
Gotta get to work or I'll be late

Oh, Spiders

My skin is hot my tongue is dry
And I think that I know why
It's that my future's been wiped clean
And I've got nothing left to dream

The spiders pour another drink
They're trying to tell me what to think
Feels like I've always been asleep
My days just endlessly repeat

I used to have a name
I used to have an opinion
But now I play their game
And pour another gin

They want to show me what is real
The spiders help me not to feel
They told me that I need to learn
That it is none of my concern

Spiders are coming through my screen
They're feeding on all of my dreams
I scrub away, I can't get clean
Another cog in the Machine™

Oh, Spiders

The spiders underneath my bed
They're burrowing inside my head
Spinning their webs, catching my thoughts
Judging me by what I bought

And then I stumble through my day
The threads of silk getting in my way
There's no escape, they know my fears
Been tracking me for many years

So I sit staring into space
Their webs enveloping my face
They gently cover up my eyes
It's easy to believe their lies

All I have to do is to submit
It feels better than I should admit
I've learned how to recite my lines
Those spiders are good friends of mine.

Oh, spiders

They're on my paycheck
They're in my pills
They're on the billboards
They drink their fill

I think this is genius.

Only two comments:

1.  In my second track, the music drowns out the text a bit.  The music itself is perfect, IMO, but its a little overwhelming in volume when compared to the spoken part.

2.  A little too much reverb/backing up, same track (don't worry too much about this one).

Other than that, it's amazing, start to finish.

Yeah, I agree that the vox need to come up a bit.

Oh, by the way, you mentioned "dememnted country song," and I got inspired.

Written in the style/manner of "Be Careful of Stones that You Throw" by Hank Sr.

The last one to know
Is the first one to go
And it's a hell of a mountain to climb
So believe when I say
That I ain't gonna stay
And get caught in the web one more time

After a week with no sleep
Neither whiskey nor countin' sheep
I complained to the doc 'bout my ills
He said nothing's wrong
It was stress all along
And he gave me a handful of pills

Then from under his coat
More legs started to grow
And then out his mouth grew some fangs
He said, "You'll soon be content
And only worry 'bout the rent"
And he told me "there's no need for thanks"

Chorus:
Oh, the Spiders are carefully waiting
For the day that your life falls apart
You may think that there's nothing worth saving
And for them, that's the best place to start

So now I go through my day
Work my job, get my pay
It seems like I'm walking through a dream
The Spider wrapped me up tight
But I gave in without a fight
Though sometimes I can't help but scream.

The last one to know
Is the first one to go
And it's a hell of a mountain to climb
So believe when I say
That I ain't gonna stay
And get caught in the web one more time

Yeah, that might be making it on there.

Listenign to it, I liked it.  The background music worked nicely with it, and the tone and pacing was different than my inner monologue, startlingly so.
Then mental image of the hipster, the heavy rimmed glasses, cabbie hat, and gauged out vegan horn earings set in.  I was weird for a little while, and may have stipped naked to don a plain tunic and preach out the window.

I like the first one with roger the best.  It reminds me of a Slint song, which is a very good thing.  Its got a little more of almost a movie score feel to it too, though, so it doesn't end up sounding derivative or anything.  Did roger phone in his part, or did you just add some reverb, because the vox sounds pretty rad.  Good stuff, mang!

When I was very very young I remember watching Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2" video on MTV.  This was back when they use to do 'closet classics' and play videos by led zepplin and Floyd and other old rock acts.  Anyway, I remember vividly to this day how utterly freaked out I got at the part with all the scary no-face zombie kids get dropped into the meat grinder.

Roger, the way you describe the no-face spider people made me think of THAT face, you know, the whole 2 eyes and a tube for a mouth.  Fucking freaky.  I kept having the same freaked out feeling I would get as a child watching that video when I would think of your spiderweb-people.

Oh, and I dont think I mentioned it in the hey lmno thread, but the two pieces that LMNO used are definitely a cut above your usual stuff.  They don't have that acerbic quality that some of your rants have.  Like i said before, good shit.

The beauty of the late TGRR's letter idea was that it was open ended; instead of a conclusion, it ended with "to be continued", so anyone willing to pick it up and run with it has full license to do so.

Due to logistical snafus, I have temporarily skipped rant 5, and gone straight to rant 6 - Richter's "All you need".

All you who mentioned you might help, feel free to jump in any time.

What's due from me?  I think I'm okay to do something tomorrow or Friday.

I recall you outsourced the "And the strands are all colorful" piece to Richeter.

Or, I may have been hallucinating.

If that's still the plan, your next one after that is the "It's hard to say what things used to be like" piece.

I really, really need to get back to my computer and do more work.  That damn vacation threw off my schedule.

That's still the plan, but I am very bored and may steal it back.  I am, it seems, bedridden...so anything, ANYTHING besides reading and sleeping would be nice.

NOW what the fuck happened to you?

Got sick.  My paranoid episodes and increasing insomnia (3 mg of lorazapam just to get to sleep, lol) finally got completely out of hand, and I fired my doc and got a new one.  Seems I have what appears to be some horrible brain infection, centered on my reticular formation thingie.  This has cause swelling that mimics a weirder form of epilepsy, and may have done actual permanent damage (though, it seems, nothing that will cause me profound problems).  Incidentally, this seems to be totally unrelated to the meningitis I had back in 2006.

One major disappointment, though, was looking at the playback of the scans they did.  My brain just looks like a lumpy cauliflower, whereas I had kind of envisioned it as a filthy birdcage, or perhaps a bucket full of toxic goo...and there wasn't a singe brain fluke to be seen.  Perhaps I simply need MORE of the wrong kind of fun.

I'll know for sure what shape I'm in (I hope) on Friday, but the antibiotics and/or the antivirals they pumped me full of seem to be having an effect...I feel pretty damn good, without having to gobble a handfull of horse tranquilizers.

Judging from recent history, I cannot be killed.  I'm fucking invincible.  Unfortunately, this does not extend to "not feeling pain".

So don't worry.  I'm not going to pull a Robert Jordan on you.

Fucking hell. I'm glad that

A. Someone finally figured out what the hell was going on,

B. Caught it before it killed you, and

C. It's treatable.

Also, (not really something to laugh at, but if not at myself, who?) now I bet you're the only person on the board who knows exactly what I mean when I say that blinky-flashy images make me angry. Biologically.

I'm willing to plug in any gaps that are suited to my skills if you have need of it, LMNO. Just tell me what you need and I'll do it.

Skills:

I am informed by several women (and a few guys) that my speaking voice (but certainly not my singing voice) is SEX.

I have in the past written a couple pieces that you deemed suitable to turn into lyrics.

I have a dreadfully WRATHful MSPaint brush.

Payne, if you could recite the following and send it to me, I'd be grateful:

Quote from: JimI remember there was a time when things were different.  There was more laughter.  Honest, joyous laughter.  More tears, too: But the funny thing is, even the crying felt good.  The world I remember was brighter, lighter.  My days were full of new things, and running through sprinklers with no pants on.  I can't tell when things became muddled and murky; maybe it accreted like rust on a ship.  But I remember.

I remember when the glowing box was the sun reflected off the ocean, when this busted sofa was a desk.  There was a time before the feeding tube, when strong hands chopped and sliced, when the buzz at the table was conversation, not bombastic tirades of ignorance.  I remember waking up with the sunrise, full of life and energy, wondering what the day had in store... a time when I wasn't dragged from anxious sleep by an electronic whine, when my brain didn't need to be kickstarted by chemicals, caffeine and nicotine.  I remember that before my life became a semi-endurable routine, it was a blank page, an unopened book.

Or was I dreaming that?

If you would like pointers on the delivery, PM me.

Ok, the first musical collaboration has been made!

Roaring Biscut was so kind as to use Mistress Freeky's words, and write his own music for it, as well.

Can be found at http://www.reverbnation.com/thespiderproject

Many thanks, you two!

Thanks to not being at work, another track is complete.

This one is Triple Zero's "Stuck in Sticky Strands" piece.  Short, but good (I think).

http://www.reverbnation.com/thespiderproject

Also, due to popular request, all tracks available for download, even though they aren't mastered.

YOU'RE WELCOME.

Finally got a strong enough signal to listen to this, and holy shit is it awesome.

I never like the sound of my own voice, but the music over "my" track makes up for it. And all the other tracks are really good also.

It's made me want to write some material, either for this or just for the hell of it. Which can only be a good thing, right?

Rawk on, LMNO.
