So I need volunteers to practice reading tarot for. Also, tips on doing this would be nice, too.
I'd recommend reading Camden Benares' "Common Sense Tarot". He was a friend of RAW and Greg and Kerry and also wrote "Zen without Zen Masters" which is half a great book about zen, and half a weird book about 'Kerista'-like polyamory theory and sexual revolution propaganda (Kerista was Brother Jedd's sect that invested computerized databases as a technology...yeah invented it... to keep the 'who-sleeping-in-who's-cabin' list on an easy and constant rotation (sex was optional, rotating sleeping arraignment was not optional)).
Lizzie is the woman to ask. She actually does Tarot for her job.
You should probably learn some cold reading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_reading) techniques. Also a little history couldn't hurt, for instance did you know that the "priestess" trump card is based on medieval Cathar (languedoc French peasant) Christianity, which was similar to gnosticism and admitted female priests? It is still called "the Papess" in Italian tarot decks, I believe. Little bits of info like that will probably help.
May I ask what you are learning about it for (business/pleasure)? It will probably help inform the advice if we know your objective. Also, do you genuinely believe in divination?
It's for both business and pleasure, and I kind of believe in it.
I just figured the easiest way to learn is do it. It's usually how I learn things.
That's good, particularly if it's for business purposes it is better that it is not motivated by sheer cynicism. Conversely, I think the "kind of" is important too. When you're talking about predicting to future, whether it's tarot or meteorology, I think a little humility is always a good thing.

I agree, I think this is the only way to go. Practice, practice, practice.
If you're interested in fortune telling, there are a lot of interesting routes besides tarot. The I Ching is an interesting one. Also, Cicero wrote an interesting book (http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Cicero/de_Divinatione/home.html) about classical divinatory practices. I wonder if people still read sheep's livers or the flights of birds?
My advice:
Choose a starting place. I suggest starting with Trumps.
Take one trump card each day, look at it, keep it with you, try to pick out as many details as you can, see what makes you identify with it. Writing this stuff down doesn't hurt either.
One card a day.
Read as many different books as you can, a good idea when learning any subject. Take what makes sense to you, try to understand what doesn't, reject the bullshit.
No rush.
Follow your intuition. Obviously the cards have certain meanings. But say I pull a card that is traditionally symbolic of marriage. This could be an actual marriage, or it could be a marriage of ideas, or it could even potentially be a REALLY close friendship. If you look at a card, and have a thought pop into your head about it. Follow that. :D
Also, sometimes a card has a reversed meaning. Even if it isn't reversed. So if you pull something, but are really feeling something else, go with it.
BTW you can do readings on me whenever you want. :D :D :D
Pull a card, describe what the card means in the vaguest possible terms, let the mark decide what it means.

OOH OOH I VOLUNTEER
start with an easy question.
ask the cards for me about .. ehm, this afternoon?
ok, now pick some cards and Law of Fives the fuck out of it! GO :D
I'm getting the Niine of SEE HOW WELL HE HANDLES SCISSORS AFTER YOU SUPERGLUE HIS FINGERS TO THE WALL.
I think that means, you should gently try to talk him out of it.
Bella and SPS do this for $, so asking them techniques seems a good way to go. And Lys has been doing it for profit, too. I think there's a thread somewhere out of Apple Talk with some recent tarot discussion, as well.
My own experience: just get to know your deck. Get to know the feeling of it, play with it often. The suits are pretty important in terms of their general meaning, but the specificity of what each card means according to the cheat-booklet that comes with it, well, not so much (this is what SPS meant by intuition).
Good luck, Freeky, and you can do a reading on me for finanical/job stuff if you want and pm me the results!

Freeky if you send me a PM I could tell you about where I do readings for teh monay. It's fairly easy to set up, and it's a great way to make some extra cash. Bella makes her full living off of it I believe.
My question for you. How are things looking for my wife's project?
Feel free to post the cards you pulled in thread and your reading of them.
Okay Tarot ladies...
I'm going to buy a deck, most likely the Rider-Waite, because I want to do an interpretation of my own deck (It was requested of me YEARS ago and I was like...goddamn that's a lot of cards...)
Other than the Rider-Waite, what is another popular deck to base artwork on?
Babylon: I drew six cards, and got the following pairs: The Sun/Nine of pentacles, Ace of Pentacles rev/Two of pentacles, Page of cups rev/Eight of Cups.
I'm thinking that your wife recently finished a project, on which she did a good job and had some glee and pride in having done so. Possibly.
Now she's getting prepared to start stuff on her next project and putting in a lot of time doing research, maybe. It could be that soon she'll be doing a lot of daydreaming, trying to figure out better ways to do her project.

I'm also a professional reader and not a lady (I'm a whore, plus I'm a male)
Aliester Crowley's book of Thoth is probably the second most widely used deck after Rider Waite.

Not quite, this is how you learn though (IE by making mistakes)
My wife is a screenwriter, she has finished the writing part but is doing the selling part now. Things are going slowly and she is currently out in California trying to make them move along.
We definitely reached a concluding point in the project recently, as they finally signed a paper that obligates them to give her money, and she is out there trying to get ahold of that money right now. (I do notice a lot of pentacles, which relate to money, so that both makes sense with the theme of my question and augers well for things working)
Did you assign specific meanings to each position?
Also if I take that as a shortly future thing (as in she'll have concluded her project shortly and be doing planning/daydreaming for the next one soon) It is exactly what I'd been hoping for, which is very much the sort of thing that gets you repeat customers, if your predictions end up being accurate.
Thoth is pretty.
There's a Radiant Rider-Waite on Amazon for $14 right now. It's just basically got more depth and shading than the original. Most of the other decks are based on the Rider-Waite, except for the full-blown New Age hippie ones that just go off in a totally different direction.
There's basically three threads in Tarot Decks
The Waite deck is the most widely used, especcially if you include the vast number of derivatives
Book of Thoth is second, and also has quite a few derivatives
Then there is the Tarot De Marseilles, which is older than those two, and less widely used. Personally I am not crazy about it becuase while Waite and Crowley have illustrations on each card the Marseilles deck just has the number of pips on each of the minor arcana cards. It doesn't look all that different from a poker deck. There are derivatives from it as well though and it is the oldest of the three decks and thus the most "traditional"
Each of these three has their own way of being organized and read, this includes their derivatives, so, for instance, Mistress Freeky's Celtic Dragon deck is based on the Waite deck and can be read in roughly the same way.
Also, as Nigel said there are some random new age decks that try to be something completely new. The only one that I have found interesting so far is the round deck (I can't remember the name right now) that includes different ways of reading the cards based on different angles than just upright and reversed, since a round card can be at any angle.
I second the Thoth as popular. Though I read someone on EB&G saying it wasn't for "playing around." Pish posh.
Anyway, I recently passed on this deck (http://www.astroamerica.com/t-moon.html) to my cousin as it was great to learn on. I have the Scapini tarot for myself, it was my first deck ever, and difficult to learn on but great to use for me atm, though I am seeking another that grabs me.

Some people don't think any tarot deck is for playing around. Crowley himself, who designed the Thoth deck, did an awful lot of playing around with other people's sacred traditions, so it seems only appropriate to play around with his deck. I personally prefer the Waite or Marseilles deck for playing card games with since the pips are the same from one card to another, making it easier to tell at a glance which suit a card is in. Crowley has different shapes to the swords, wands, cups and disks from one card to another.

This all makes perfect sense!
Also, it amazes me sometimes, with the level of TFY,S and all-out cynicism we all display here how many of us actually are quite knowledgable and whatnot with tarot. *shrug* Guess I really should cease to be amazed if I actually HAD that requisite level of TFY, S etc.
...but on the other hand, maybe it's good, too.
Ooh, I like the Radiant Rider-Waite. I think I'll pick that one up. :)

For that purpose "Universal Waite" might be better than Rider-Waite.
The prints from Rider-Waite are maybe the originals, but they lack a lot of detail. Red splotches that are supposed to be specific kinds of fruit (which is explained in Mr Waite's Tarot book) and things like that: http://learntarot.com/cards.htm
Universal Waite are exactly the same cards but completely redrawn with a lot more detail and accurate shadings and such, so you can actually tell from most things what's going on.
On the other hand, if you want to make your own deck, it's maybe more useful to do it from the Waite Tarot book, than from the cards itself. I think it is called "A Pictorial Guide to Tarot" or something. That one has two or three pages explaining most of the symbolic imagery on every card, so you don't have to end up just copying the imagery, but can substitute in other things that symbolize the same concept to you personally. If you get my drift.
I didn't know the Radiant Waite version, it seems it's kind of the same idea as Universal Waite.
Except that ..
waite for it ..
the colours are more radiant
SORRY I COULDNT RESIST
anyway, I found aeclectic.net often gives good reviews of different Tarot decks, so you can compare:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/universal-waite/
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/radiant-rider-waite/
and, together with the explanations on learntarot.com, the individual cards, suits, numbers and majors explanations on aeclectic.net form the largest parts of my knowledge of tarot cards interpretation. what I mean is, I can recommend both.

SPS: I drew the 7 of cups, six of swords, and 7 of pentacles, and the the 4 of swords, knight of wands, and 4 of wands
the first three, to me, looked like the answer to your question, and the next three seem like its more advicey, so I'll leave off on that until you say yay/nay...
Maybe you're a bit confused by something, a choice possibly you have to make. Next card, to me, gives off this "I'ma conquer!" vibe, so maybe you're confident elsewhere, or you're thinking of making a conquest out of somebody. The seven of pentacles to me is saying "Chill out," so maybe everyone around you, or you yourself, is laidback about things.
Hey Stoat. I tried reading the outcome for you, but I don't think I'm much good at reading financial stuff. It made NO sense at all to me, from beginning to end. There was a bunch of pentacle cards, so maybe it'll work out. The only thing I think is that you'll end up making a compromise somewhere along the line.

two friend conflicts today actually. First one with the ex. We were going to go out to lunch, but he's seeing someone new now and he chose her over me as she's insecure that he's hanging out with girls(esp me since I'm THE EX). The second just happened/is happening with OF because (and partially the conquer thing since I am ocd about plans) I asked him about dinner since my dad was asking me, and he took it to mean that I was attacking him like I did last week. The chill out is probably that we both need to chill the FUCK out.

Well I already know I got my place...but sure. More good news is always welcome.
Ok, Trip. For your question I did a celtic cross. I got the follwoing cards:
1 Nin of wands rev
2 10 of Cups
3 4 of Pents
4 Judgement rev
5 Heirophant
6 Wheel of Fortune rev
7 3 of Cups rev
8 Emperor rev
9 Knight of pents
10 6 of Cups rev
From the 9 of wands, I am guessing that either you're sick right now, or you're not really prepared for this project, but from the 10 of cups I gather your personal relationships are doing good, and possibly someone might be encouraging you in your work. The four of pents suggests you were asking because you just got something that reminded you of this project. It also points to you having had money in mind when asking, maybe?
Judgement upside down could mean that you've failed to put forth as much creative effort as you can in the recent past, and its on the way out of your life. Maybe. The heirophant tends to suggest that you will want to conform to some set of mannerisms and morals in the near future, although I don't really see why it would fit in in this spread. The Wheel of Fortune placed as it is is a warning that some quite bad luck may eventually come your way. Keep your hopes up, Trip...
You may be worried that this may end up being more work than its worth, as the reveresed 3 of cups represents just that, and also hints at illness. Watch out for that, and take care of yourself. The Emperor card suggests that someone who is close to you thinks that you are too emotionally immature and weak of character to pull this off.
The Knight of Pents suggests that you may get some help from some youngish dude, maybe who has black hair and eyes, or is methodical and trustworthy but for the most part unimaginative.
The final card, 6 of Cups reversed, has several meanings that could fit the outcome. The most liekly seems to be that the whole enterprise will leave you somewhat disappointed in that it won't be as successful as you hoped, but that doesn't mean it won't work out.
Hey, Freeky, I asked a while back if you wanted you could do one for my financial situation/work situation. Feel free to try it out if you have time.
Oh yeah. I remember now. I did try, but that was the deck that didn't like financial questions. Check your PMs in like, thirty seconds though.
