Title: Vietnam
Post by: bones on February 15, 2010, 02:39:38 AM
I have been here for the past couple of weeks. This place is fucking awesome. Yesterday I went to the Chu Chi (?) tunnels and saw a bit about how the American War was fought (of course that's what they call it here). Also I got to shoot an AK47. Hell yes!

Also, some time last century they meshed all the known religions together to create 'Cao Dai' which apparently incorporates them all. I just saw a massive golden temple and prayed with them. The main symbol for Cao Dai is an eye, and quite often it is inside a triangle.

Just a few half-constructed updates while I'm still a little nauseaous from food poisoning. I will follow this up with some pics soon, maybe after Thursday when I come back to Australia.

Oh, yeah, and screw St Valentine! It was Tet yesterday, Chinese new year.  Happy year of the Tiger PDSpags!

Also, I'm interested about Cao Dai, could you give us some more of your impressions?

I've been to the Cu Chi tunnels as well, good fun that ^_^

THIS.  And yes, it was Spring Festival/Chinese New Year, we celebrated that instead of VD-Day.  Got the fresh fish fry at our local Asian market and fried up chicken pot stickers.

Where did I say that?  No, the French didn't FORCE us to do anything, so our actions are our own responsibility.  I was giving the sequence of events, not a rationalization...so you can jam the smiley up your puckered arse, Bones.

Unless you're suggesting that the Vietnam conflict DIDN'T come because we broke our word to the Vietnamese when DeGaul cried after WWII?  Is that what you're saying?

But do you have an Australian passport or American passport? And...who the frack has a family reunion in Vietnam?! Sorry. I'm glad you're having a good time, but I can't imagine why anyone would want to go there. Of course, I also have the brainwashed and skewed point of view as an American who deep down somewhere past all of the common sense and reason is the tiny patriotic gland that is still butt hurt for losing the "police action".
Title: Re: Vietnam
Post by: bones on February 15, 2010, 04:57:56 PM
Suu, I happen to have both, but I entered on my Aussie passport. My brother also has both but he came on his US passport, as an American. They will let you come visit because you'll spend heaps of your money here and they'll give you food poisoning. It's all good. Half of the prices of things here are listed in USD, not VND. Everyone accepts both. In fact, the government just devalued the Dong (from 18,000 Dong to US$1), and apparently the reason for this is to get all the US currency present here back into circulation and out of peoples savings.
As for the reason we came here, long story, but in a nutshell it's kind of a halfway point for us all to meet from around the world.
As for your tiny patriotic gland, KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT NOW! Our parents happened to fuck in the USA, that's all. We never never NEVER EVER should have come here in war. We fucking destroyed this place, massacred the people and destroyed countless of our own peoples lives. And still got nowhere. The war museum here is one of the worst in the world (despite it's obvious bias) for showing the dispickable atrocities of war and making you sick just to see it.

I didn't get it too bad. Only lasted one day at it's worst, and after three days I'm pretty much all better. I was vomiting and crapping at the same time for a few hours though..
And yes, the food is totally awesome. We spent one night on a junk boat up north. Place called Halong Bay. On our own private boat for about 20 hours, with about 6 crew to our family of 8 + a baby and a local tour guide. We were fed 4 meals in that time, averaging 9 courses each. No shit.
There will be pics. Soon.

I dunno, DeGaulle had some good ideas re: armoured warfare, even though he pinched them from Liddell Hart.  At the very least, his suggestions sent the French High Command into spasms of rage.  Later on in life, he wasn't too wonderful, I would agree, but then, French officers never age well, just look at Napoleon.  Mountbatten would've been hung for Dieppe, under older British admiralty laws, and I can't say it would've been entirely unreasonable to do so.

I'm sure this list is missing someone, though...

There's a crazy old Vietnamese man at the community garden, who was somehow involved in the war and now can't return because he says that they'll kill him if he ever goes back. He also claims to have 7 life stories that he tells people, 6 of which false, so then again he isn't a reliable source.

Having understood little about Cao Dai at the time, it seemed to me to be quite a cool idea that they mixed together their fueding religions (Buddhism, Taoism, even Christianity) to make The One True Religiontm
Kinda Discordian?

Quote from: WikipediaAccording to Cao Dai, before God existed, there was the Tao, the nameless, formless, unchanging, eternal source referenced in the Tao Te Ching. Then, a Big Bang occurred, out of which God was born (emanationism). The universe could not yet be formed and to do so, God created yin and yang. He took control of yang and shed a part of himself, creating the Goddess to preside over yin. In the presence of yin and yang, the universe was materialized. The Goddess is, literally, the mother of the myriad of things in the Universe. Thus, Caodaiists worship not only God, the father, but also the Goddess, literally referred to as the Mother Buddha. Note that God's importance and role is higher than that of the Mother Buddha. Also, the Mother Buddha, as are all buddhas, is a part of Yang, and therefore, is male. Yin is the female side, and the Mother Buddha only oversees Yin, but is not a part of Yin.

There are 36 levels of heaven and 72 planets harboring intelligent life, with number one being the closest to heaven and 72 nearest to Hell. Earth is number 68. It is said that even the lowest citizen on planet 67 would not trade place with a king on 68 and so forth.

They only have three saints (according to the strictest interpretations) and Victor Hugo is one of them.

My grandfather either.  He sorta hates Vietnam AND Japan...two places he was stationed at during the war.

My Grandma, however, gleefully tells me all about how nice it was in Japan when she and my Grandpa were stationed there.  Apparently they had a Japanese maid, and she and my Grandpa would say horrible things to each other to tease each other and end up chasing each other around the house.

Traffic was getting pretty heavy a lot leading up to tet. Vietnam has 84 million people and 10 million scooters. There seem to be pretty much no road rules, but no one really goes above about 40kmph, except on highways. Saw a few people come off their bikes, everyone stops, picks them up and helps out.

I would spend every minute wondering if any of my friends or family were still there. I would wonder where they died. I would wonder where the pieces they came back without were. Some memories just don't die Rog. You of all people know I am not a right wingnut. But in this I would never set foot in that country. Ever. Those 'cool' tunnels harbored soldiers that killed Americans. They hid supplies and weapons in them. They were booby trapped.
Do you know how they checked those tunnels out in the 'police action'? The smallest guy was held by his feet and lowered in head first with a .45 pistol. Fun times. Maybe I better just leave this thread.

I am glad you enjoyed your trip.

All of this is true, Hawk, but whose fault is it?  Not the Vietnamese.

It was this guy:

It was HIS fault all those people died.  Oh, and all the people who believed his bullshit.  If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at him, and at a complacent America that believed his lies, just as they believed the lies about WMDs in 2003.

Thanks Hawk,

I am sorry to bring up painful memories, no threadjack.
Soldiers killing soldiers though. You can't hold it against them, we invaded their country. No American civilians were killed, right?
The rudimentary booby traps they built were horrible, but effective, and they didn't have much choice. I, for one, was taking notes in case any poor bastard is ever duped into invading my home one day, and into believing I am his enemy.

I know it is understandably a topic of much grief to many Americans, that war is a horrible little stain on our history. Honestly, I wanted to see what reactions this thread would get from everyone here, because real, honest, bare human emotions are beautiful, Hawk. I certainly don't deserve an apology from you. I should instead thank you for expressing yourself in my thread, or maybe I should be the one apologising for bringing it up. I can't even imagine what it's like to lose friends or relatives in a war, so it's pretty unfair and horrible for me to force the topic on those that have.

I haven't had much time for lurking PD lately, so I feel it's a bit rude of me to keep bumping this thread.
I'm glad if people enjoy it though, and I'll probably post some more pics sometime, too.
