...and now I can't seem to find the thread it was in. So now I have to start a new thread and I really didn't want to but I really wanted opinions.
*inhaaaaaaaaaale* that was a long sentence
So there's an opening for a training coach at work.
I'll keep my base pay but lose most of my incentive pay which is kind of like a commission and sometimes a considerable amount of money.
Pros-
-- getting off my damn machine and letting some of my back and shoulder problems heal
-- having more "management" experience on my resume
-- the possibility of a greater chance for relocation when they phase us out next year
-- getting to move around, teach people stuff and learn something new
-- GETTING OFF MY MACHINE
-- a sense of purpose
Cons-
-- less pay
Do I sacrifice money for happiness?
I'm sorry, but do you even HAVE to ask that?
We're DISCORDIANS. If you don't know what our answer to that will be, either I need to stop generalizing and presuming, or you're pretty dense.
That was in Apple Talk Bodega, and it was pretty much 100% "yes" from those who answered.

I say it's absolutely worth a pay cut. One can always adapt to a lower income.

You could reorganize your finances. Adopt some lifestyle changes...you'll already be making changes, the rest of them should just come along for the ride, right?

More or less sad than to keep at a job that stresses you out and causes you physical pain? That stuff adds up quicker and lasts longer than money.
IMO, mental and physical health almost always outweighs money.
yeah true.
i just don't want to have to cut out too much of the little things that make me happy.
like my horrible addiction to this stuff every other weekend or so--

I say do it to save your back alone. Like was said above, you can adapt to less money. You only get one back.
Studies show that more money does not mean more happiness.
This is science, do not argue. :)
OOhh we can have a sing-a-long!

Speaking as someone with less than a tenner to his name, voluntarily reducing your income seems a little silly. Although, if the benefits outweigh the cons (and I think they do, in this case) I reckon go for it.

Yes I was wondering what happened to Apple Talk Bodega.
Squid - def. yes. It'll do more as career / resume building in the long run, and taking the stress off ought to be a high priority.

Do I sacrifice money for happiness?
Now that you have provided more details, the answer is even more a resounding
yes. Especially if you can leverage it into the elusive "soft skills" criteria that more and more employers are looking for.
It may be less pay now, but it offers a shitload more opportunities down the road.
So long as you're making enough money to still meet all your budgets (and a little bit to spare), it sounds like a sensible option. The bonus may be nice....but ask yourself if its worth the extra stress, backpain and hours to get it. If not, go for the new position.

SQUID YES!!! HAPPINESS ALWAYS OVER MORE PAY!!!
Sacrifices and risks sometimes pay off in the end.
Yeah.
I just had myself one of my funny miniature freak outs this morning too.
"What if this affects lil squid's extra curricular activities? What if he brings me those straight A's and I can't get him the thing I promised?? Oh god! What if he needs socks and I can't afford socks?!? Who the hell will buy his socks?!? I'll have to make socks out of scrap fabric in the garage!! GRAAAAAWR!!"
Then I thought about how cool those Franken-socks would be and came back to reality.
I wrote up my proposal last night. So I think I'm gonna go for it. I can save the freaking out until I actually see one of these paychecks.
And hey, I'm pretty good at creative accounting so I think I'll be ok.

Easy, there, killer. There's too many "really real" discordians telling real discordians how to really be real discordians, really. Keep your enthusiasm in check, it may make you look bad.
On topic, I agree with the general opinion of the forum at large, but it seems to me that the money you would be losing can be a significant amount. Is this money you
depend on having? Will you be happier by more than the value* of the money you're losing.
*by this I don't neccessarily mean monitary value or the value of the money itself, but the value of the things it's needed to purchase, ie. food, rent, etc...
That's my problem.
I'm not sure exactly how much money I will lose.
It has the potential to be a significant amount. Which would suck.
But I won't know until I give it a shot.
I'm just nervous about it.

Yeah, because there's a hideous possibility in NOT taking this chance.
What if little Squiddy's mom is too racked up from back pain to attend his graduation? Or his wedding? What if she's in jail because she lost her shit and made her boss comsume everything in the janitor's closet?
No, take the new job. You can't buy a new back.

Listen, Jackalope, there's two ways to handle any given issue. One is to simply answer the question and be nice, and the other is to slip a nasty comment in. The latter is MY FUCKING JOB, and if you start horning in on my turf, I'll unscrew your head and shit down your neckpipe. So try being nice once in a while, and maybe lay off telling us all how DISCORDIANS behave. I think we can figure that out on our own.
Thanks,
Dok.

This just makes it seem (to me) that you have already made a decision, and you are just looking for some support from people you like/respect/at least aren't complete imbiciles. If that's the case, I'm sure you will find much support with the people here, if not the people around you AFK.
I gotchya back either way (as much as is in my capability of doing so, that is).
I was on the fence last night.

You'll get ulcers that way. Or worse.
I mean, *I* kept things bottled up for decades...and then one day it all came out, like an airliner with a bad septic valve. Just a horrible frozen lump of blue stuff, hurtling towards the unsuspecting people below. Not an entirely unattractive concept, I realize, but the problem is the behavior and the feelings stay, even when you've run out of innocent bystanders.
I, of course, use the term "innocent" loosely.
My inner tension could crush Tokyo like Godzilla.
I've made strangers leave the bar just by walking in and not saying anything.
I have a ten foot force field of frustration and anger.
It'll kill me one day when I'm old and tired. I'm sure of it.
I'm kinda ok with that.

and you can't buy a new back!
and and you said the new job will have VARIATION and OPPORTUNITIES and STUFF
and your current job sounds horrible, sorry to say it, but so get something else and you be great! and also what Dok said, don't worry about the socks. I will send you socks. We will all send you socks. But what about when your kid needs you and your back is all broken and horrible.
So I was formally introduced to our one trainee today.
She's almost through with her learning session and should be on the floor encoding soon.
There will be another class starting soon that consists mostly of people from r&d who want to be operators, so they pretty much know what they're doing. This is a good chance for me to kind of get my bearings since I'm already comfortable with them and most of the things I'll be teaching them will be little tips and tricks to increase their speed and whatnot.
Then comes two classes back to back with people who've either never stepped foot in a bank or have some experience.
So I'm easing into it one step at a time, have lots of literature and classes to take for certification and stuff. I think I'm going to enjoy this so much more than being an operator.
When I left for work today I didn't feel like shooting myself in the face just to get out of it.
All in all, even if I lose a little money, I think I'm gonna be a lot happier.
Nice :)

I should have bailed from my last job a long time ago, and then I went kinda nuts. I'd choose health over apparent monetary wealth any day of the week.
