The pickup was out of go-juice today, so I stopped by the station to fuel up. Upon completing the fuel up, I dutifully entered the fuel info into my little phone app because that's just the sort of nerd I am.
And then I found it.
I was overcharged 4 cents! I triple checked my numbers, but there was no mistake... there was 4 more cents on the pump than what it should have been. I debated going inside and yelling, or sending an angry email to the gas company, or something, but in the end, I settled for a lame rant on PD and a bunch of cussing.
However, in retrospect, it leaves me curious about why 4 cents has upset me so. Grrr.

Be real polite. Show up with the recipt and ask for $.04 in credit.

I even got a creepy look from the guy pumping the gas like he knew what was up too.

I don't think it's odd you were upset...your fundamental faith in a thing was found to be well, groundless, as it is not as accurate as it should be. One machine trumped another, and you obviously rely on the pump to give you the straight results of your sale and not dupe you into believing you are paying accurately and thereby fairly.
Outrage is normal here, even for such a small amount of 4 cents, which over time will accummulate into a larger number that eventually can't be ignored.
This is where principle and practicality but heads, for me.
It's a douchebaggy thing to do, and by gettign away with it over hundreds of customers they're padding their profits. They should be called on it. How many people would be likely to pick up $.04 off the ground, though, much less is the money worth the time and energy? It's one of those hidden taxes in life.
We could also surmise that the pump has an interesting, and perhaps preemptive, rounding algorithm. If you're quick, you may be able to squeeze an extra .01 gallon of gas out before it tics over on the price again.
which station was this at? id like to avoid it.
I'd report it. It's skimming, and some places do it regularly. It can add up to a lot.

I'm convinced that every gas station in OR is running this scam, and that that's the REAL reason we're not allowed to pump our own gas here. I almost always go over to Vancouver to fill up, even though gas is about 10 cents more per gallon across the river.

I always go to either of the Chevrons or the 76 on MLK. I always check the pump total against the receipt, too. Never been jacked.

i was at the 7-11 on state and 2100 and the stupid pump kept clicking over and over. I could only get about three cents of gasoline at a time. very annoying.

those fuckers who I'm forced to allow to pump my gas for me DO NOT KNOW WHAT "FILL IT UP" MEANS. It actually means "please fill my entire gas tank", not "please put 4/5 of a tank in and then stop pumping so you can go flirt with the cute girl at pump 4."
What really pisses me off is that most of those guys make more money per hour than I do.
