Title: Hey, LMNO. I'm ready to listen to reason.
Post by: Dimocritus on March 16, 2010, 05:39:10 PM
So,

My guitarist has bee historically very stubborn and closed minded when it came to doing anything out of the norm. Well, when it came to anything, really. BUT. He is in the process of going through a divorce. A good divorce. Now, he's all over the place, going crazy doing all sorts of things he's never done before, and it's awesome.

With that being said, you've stated in another thread that we could use an update or a change in our approach. Now that my guitarist is in a state of mind which allows us to explore new ideas, I'm very curious to hear you elaborate on said updates.

So, give it to me straight ( :horrormirth:)

Also, we're thinking about covering Shocking Blue's "Send me a Post Card." A little more speed in the tempo, but basically unchanged.

Cover Yoko Ono tunes in speedmetal.

Well, I can only offer a process, I can't really provide the solution.

What I would do is get the band to reveal their guilty secret song pleasures.  The stuff from when they were kids that they could never give up (John Denver, for example), or the new stuff on the radio that they hid when their peer group comes over (Bat for Lashes maybe, or St Vincent).  Chances are that they will be pretty varied, and often kind of eclectic.

Then, cover those songs in rehearsal.  One or two covers from each person in the band.  Don't do it note-for-note, add your own feel to it, but at the same time don't throw them all into the hardcore speedup machine.

Yeah, most of it will sound pretty odd, and some of them will suck.  But in there are the seeds for a new sound.  Combine the elements that move you, and you'll end up with something new and interesting.

For example, if you break down the main influences behind Frost Heaves, you'll get Stone Roses/Fugazi/Cure/Stooges/Killers/Supergrass/Nick Cave/Arctic Monkeys/Gang of Four/MGMT/Smiths/Supergrass/Replacements/Hawkwind.

Not in that order, but you get the idea.

Cool beans. Makes sense. Though, even with my guitarists new found love for exploraton, this would be a tough one, but no doubt beneficial if I can get every one on the same page. I'll see what I can do. Thanks.

Oh, I think it goes without saying that this can be really funny, too.

Do it for a laugh, but pay attention to anything that may sound cool.

In my last band, we decided to cover "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc as a joke, and it turned out to be fucking amazing.

This just answered my next question, which was going to be: how can I motivate these guys to try this? But, they'll do most anything for the lulz. False Pretenses FTW!

Try Voodoo Glow Skulls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcTabQ5HPPs).

Poke around a bit, that song might not be the best representation.

I love these suggestions.

Plus, like rape, you mentioned 'Supergrass' twice.

:argh!:

I'm not in a band anymore, haven't been for a long time and probably won't be again. However, if I was, I would totally want to try this out.
