Title: NationStates Anyone?
Post by: Suu on March 24, 2010, 02:43:31 AM
I haven't played in a long time but I just found the site again and revived my Nation. It's actually where I got the name Sovereign Principality of Kaousuu from YEARS ago.

It's been a while since I was last there. Should probably check and see how Katastropha has done in my absence.

SEMPER UBI SUB UBI (Always where under where?) is wrong.

SEMPER GERAS SUBUCULAM (Always wear undergarments) is more correct, AFAICT.

Also, I TRIED TO PLAY AN ONLINE GAME BUT ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY LATIN GRAMMAR TROLL.

SUBLIGARIA is the documented term for underwear, AFAIK.  Examples from letters home from members of the legion, asking for more socks and underwear.  Also possible this was not "proper" Latin, since it was a soldier writing home, and not a scholarly document.
I don't know where we got SUBUCULAM from.   If it's "modern" Latin, it may be an approximation.  (the Forum Nostrum crowd are pretty infamous for those :) )

PBF can't help but be an insufferable pedant, I've noticed.  He probably has Assburgers or something, but he should be made fun of regardless.

Also, Enrico needs to sign up to this ASAP.  I will sign up, but I'm not going to tell anyone here who I am, because I want to test certain IR principles in the game first.

You might have to find him of Facebook.  I caught a rumor that he's not coming around here anymore.

I forgot how much fun this could be (and thought provoking).

My issue today was to figure out what to do with homeless people, and the laws up in the World Assembly to vote on had to do with the repealing of a Disaster Preparedness Act and condeming another nation for slavery.

I remember playing this a long time ago.  I can't remember if I played it honestly, or if I tried to fuck it up royally.

I think I'll sign up again, if I can access it at work.

[edit: I can't.  I'll see if they have a mobile site.]

There's no WRONG way to play. You can be an asshole or a good leader and then watch the results.

You should emulate Saparmurat Niyazov.

Ok, it works pretty well on my iPhone.

I am now the Nomadic Peoples of Last Exit Before Toll.

I think I will play this as how I would like my nation to be.

I'll probably end up sinking the damn thing.

Not to threadjack, but only an autistic would find it amusing to put a block of brainfuck code in his sig.

Enki,
only an autistic who would find it funny to see a block of brainfuck code in someone's sig.

Well I just realized if I want to emulate my favourite historical leader ever, I may actually need to do some research.  Lots, actually, going by the amount of nations and regional factions.

Oh well, no-one ever said hegemony was going to be easy...

No asperger's, yes insufferable pedant sometimes. I'll try to reign it in. Feel free to make fun of me for it.

The Armed Republic of Occams Guillotine has been created and joined Spagtopia.

Have they updated the questions and options yet, or is this still the exact same NationStates I played in 2005?

Nationstates is pretty simplistic. If you want to micromanage, try cybernations instead.

Apparently there's a mechanism for seasoned players to submit their own questions.
Title: Re: NationStates Anyone?

I didn't say I wanted micromanage.  I was talking about relations with other players.

You should really stop assuming you know what other people are talking about.

Now I'm trying to guess who your favorite political figure is.

I won't say it out loud, though.  Because I'm probably wrong.

I'm just bringing it up because of the way nationstates is played. It's difficult even to keep a consistent alignment given the options available, let alone a given figure. (Also, the only way to interact with other players seems to be RPing on their forums)

I just remembered why I stopped playing.

There is no nuance.  There was a bike rally today, and I was asked if I wanted to A) ban cars, B) crack down on cyclists, or C) give the auto industry more money.

New nation.  :)

The Sultanate of Boroglavia is a fledgling, devout nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, cynical population of 5 million are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The enormous, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Religion & Spirituality, and Commerce. The average income tax rate is 33%, but much higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Arms Manufacturing.

Crime is moderate. Boroglavia's national animal is the tumbleweed, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the bullet.

The Grand Duchy of My infected genitals is a fledgling, devout nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate, hard-working, cynical population of 5 million are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.

The tiny, corrupt, moralistic government concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Religion & Spirituality and Commerce are secondary priorities. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 1%. A small private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Soda Sales.

Crime is a problem. My infected genitals's national animal is the vampire, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the cigarette.

"Whoa, whoa," says noted accountant Jennifer Gutenberg. "Are these people serious? The last thing I want to see when I'm out for a coffee is some lumbering, over-weight nudist coming down the sidewalk toward me. If people want to get naked, they can do it in the privacy of their own homes. Think of the children!"

"The fact is, the tumbleweed population is out of control," says Beef-Based Agriculture spokesperson Miranda O'Bannon. "We have to do something about them anyway, so why not market them as tasty snacks?"
