So my laptop has decided to not let me type, and when I restart it gets stuck in the restart--looping through it, and beeping. Or I get some primative "set up" screen that doesn't function.
I'm about () close to throwing it through our glass door. What do I do?
Open your door before you throw it.

Make sure the dawg isn't in the way.
Dok,
Has shot two (2) laptops.
Nothing much left to do but try and reinstall the OS, or send in the hard drive to somebody who can attempt to salvage the data from it.
Fuck.
Do you have a USB Keyboard around?
How many beeps are you getting? Are they long pauses?
What brand is your computer?
Seriously though, NP is right: it may be that your keyboard is just fucked up and may be very easy to replace depending on your model.
Did you spill anything on it?
It goes *toshiba start up* *black* "Beepbeepbeepbeep *flash of improper shut down* *start over* I've gotten it to actually start twice. The second time with typing freezing after about 5ish mins.
Hm...
4 beeps is a keyboard problem I think
(Is it a long beep or 4 short beeps? If its short beep then it could be serious shit :lulz:)
A keyboard failure shouldn't fuck with the rest of the computer though, should it? I can only guess, but that smells like power supply failure.
2nd opinion?
Well it depends on the BIOS of the model, do you know what BIOS your Toshiba has? Google isn't exactly helping
[beep msgs vary from different models]

FINE :(

If the keyboard is fucked up, it can cause commands like enter setup mode or reboot to be issued.
Also, http://www.toshiba.com/tai/
Might have some luck finding beep code there.
TTM,
can't be arsed.
It def wouldn't be power supply failure, otherwise the PSU would be Shocked and would not turn on (And usually if its not severe you can reset it by discharging the energy by taking out the battery and just pushing on button)
Otherwise .. Not having much luck with beep codes :lulz: Toshiba is laggy at office. I think it'd be easier if I knew the name of the BIOS they were using (Unless they have their own?)
But lets just skip ahead and assume - SPS try a USB keyboard and see if that works or not.
I found this page http://www.5starsupport.com/info/beep_codes.htm (http://www.5starsupport.com/info/beep_codes.htm)
Dono. Define short/long beeps?
I would say a short beep would be atleast half a second, a long beep generally 1+ second
When my desktop blew last year I was having a similar problem. Turns out it was the motherboard/bios, and the bitch had to be replaced, and when I got the new motherboard, it wouldn't start at all because my power supply couldn't pull it :argh!:. This was also in February 2009. Fuck that month.
However, I can't speak for a laptop. Try the USB keyboard first to at least get to the bios screen IF you can. If that doesn't work, well, I'm sure you were due for an upgrade anyway.
Don't have usb keyboard. And it's only about a year old. :( can't afford a new one. It's 5 short beeps
I reckon buy (Or try use a friends) USB keyboard and see if it works, and go from there
I don't know any friends who'd have one. How much are these things? Would it just be cheaper to send it somewhere?
usb keyboard? Your looking at something that can be like $5 or $30 (Don't bother spending more unless you have special needs or its wireless), I got mine for $10 at Markets.
Ok, SPS, stop trying to be like me. Stop copying my topics and stay away from my property! I see you out there! I'm getting the broom! Shoo!
IT'S FIXED
Apparently it was overheating?
That happens. Remember to put it on a table and not your lap.
and...turn it off once in a while. >_>
