Title: Assignments
Post by: Dimocritus on April 08, 2010, 06:52:16 AM
I find that while I am in classes I am more inclined to participate in "extracurricular" activities. PosterGASMs and personal writing, for example. Now, one would think that I would be more inclined to be more active in these areas during a time where I would have a smaller workload. However, during the off months and vacations, I find myself unable to light a fire under my own ass to motivate myself to participate in such activities. With that being said, I would like to use this topic as a place for you guys to give me assignments for the off-months (or for anyone else looking for something to do with their free time). Things that are both fun and thought provoking would be cool. If any one has a project that they would like to see done, but don't have the time for, or any general suggestions,I'd love to hear 'em!

I have the same problem.

During the summer, I will be:

1. Searching for a better job
2. Working more on creative endeavors such as writing (specifically, my webcomic and an idea for a new Discordian Holy Book)
3. Doing Mad Science

Mad Science breaks down thusly:

-If computers are your thing, something like this (http://www.popsci.com/gear-gadgets/article/2004-06/make-your-own-arcade) could be an awesome project. Point-to-point WiFi cantennas would be an interesting project too (apparently you can get a 1 km+ range with them)
-Ferrofluid, as my GF took advanced Chem in high school. It's a magnetic fluid, and is fairly easily made and very cool.
-Motherfucking This (http://www.instructables.com/id/Giant-Fresnel-Lens-Deathray-An-Experiment-in-Opti/)

Hope you find some ideas in there. I know the feeling: last summer things just wound down and I ended up getting next to nothing done.

Instructables is generally teh win for stuff like this.
Linky (http://www.instructables.com/tag/?q=wifi+cantenna&limit:type:id=on&type:id=on&type:user=on&type:comment=on&type:group=on&type:forumTopic=on&type:forumTopic=on&sort=none)

There's also WokFi, which is the use of parabolic or near-parabolic cookware to focus the omnidirectional signal of a USB dongle into a highly directional one. Just make sure the radiator (the dongle) is at the dish's focus point, and you're good.

Get a copy of Audacity, learn how to use it, and collaborate on songs with me.

No idea.  Send me something.  I'll do something to it, and send it back.

It may turn into something for The Spider Project, it may be Two Spags Dicking Around.

"Two Spags Dicking Around" sounds like a catchy project name. I'm very interested in this idea.

Also, any one that leaves an assignment can set a deadline. I'm a procrastinator.
