QuoteShapiro, who gamely accepted the Razzie award for worst film of the decade last month, says the final product was far worse than anything he'd envisioned when he wrote the script, but he nevertheless begins by apologising to anyone who has seen Battlefield Earth, which starred John Travolta and was based on a story by Scientology creator and sci-fi writer L Ron Hubbard. He was never a Scientology member himself, and he suggests that part of his motivation for flirting with the organisation was a crush he had on a female member of the infamous Sea Org.

I'm kind of wondering why the CoS didn't have their own people writing the script & controlling the content. A non Scientologist screenwriter for a huge budget production lead by one of their 'A list' members? Seems kind of odd.

he wrote an article about it, he wrote the script and then John Travolta and the scientologists demanded a bunch of crappy changes and they fired him but he didnt take his name off the final script cause he wanted his monies

They may have actually taken on board the fact that most people think they are batshit crazy,  (in a creepy, culty way) and deliberately tried to distance themselves a little from the actual product. Lulling a sense of secure falsity onto everyone. Then slipping a cinematic roofie engram into their thinking bits.

And that's how they scientology people, with mind your head control, and subluminal suggestion. And trying to guess their motives is why I had to tinfoil hat with my head. (Fine now, thanks.)

still think the movie could be saved with a little editing here and there... maybe a scene or two.

Shamefully, I agree.

Battlefield Earth wasn't *that* bad as a novel,  and had they done things right, it could have been a decent movie.

I mean, as much as an evil fuck Elron was, he was a somewhat decent science fiction writer, and I'm not ashamed to admit, I really enjoyed reading battlefield earth and found it to be a real "page turner" and what really ruined the movie for me was knowing that a lot of the best shit was cut out of the movie for some reason and was almost a completely different story from the one I knew.
