4 million dollars to make depressed people use a gun instead? Wat.
A really determined suicider is going to climb a fence.
Or ram it with their mobility scooters.
Professor Freeky,
Yeah, she went there.
I dunno, fishing the body out of the lake would be a pain the arse, as would cordoning off the bridge to talk people down.
The sheer cost of it made me originally go "Fuck that," but honestly, it might be a good idea if just to prevent some kid walking outside and finding a human milkshake on his way to the bus stop in the morning.
While it is atrocious that suicides and whiny bitches are costing the government so much money, there isn't a better cost effective way of stopping the emotional trauma in the "splash zone," at least that I can think of.
Yeah, I ended that sentence in a proposition. Kill me.

Interestingly, it's been shown that even putting up an easily climable fence lowers the amount of suicides pretty dramatically.

They have to put more effort into it, they have to be even more sure that they want to kill themselves.
We should also make everyone wear bubblewrap burkas whenever they leave the house.
Not for the safety reasons... mostly cause it would be fun to pop people by running into them.

Oh yeah, I didn't say it wouldn't make a lot of people stop and realize it's not worth it. But there will still be people, I think maybe, who will do it.
or in the process of climbing said fence
an audience gathers
this is also a bridge that has phones that connect you to a suicide hotline if i recall
someone answering a phone > some fence

Just from bridge jumpers, or all instances of suicide in the area? (ie are they just committing suicide in other ways?)
We have the suicide hotline numbers
also, you guys have crews to fish people out? Huh.
Over here, you don't jump off the bridge, the bridge jumps for you.

That was really intense. I am fascinated by bridge collapse, which we will see a lot more of in upcoming years.

The US has built a lot of things it can't maintain, especially in this day and age. For a second it makes me feel like I'm living in some sort of gritty post-apocalyptia, scrounging the urban wastes and fields of twisted metal just to survive, but then I remember I'm eating gelato in front of the heater, with a laptop.
So it's Cyberpunk, eh?
It's delicious.
At least we shouldn't be seeing any more in Minnesota for a while, the state set aside money and is using/has used it to update the infrastructure.

What Nast said.
We'll have a lot of bridge and dam collapses upcoming, this next couple of decades. I love how the bridge and dam crisis just sort of got swept under the rug.
Basically, about 50-70 years ago, the US went through a golden era of building really big things, mostly made out of concrete, that it did not budget to maintain or replace. Unfortunately, concrete decays. Surprise!
(The fact that this is a surprise to no one should come as a surprise to no one. Classic "We'll let our kids deal with it" thinking.)
Dear Past Generations,
Do you remember always saying how the youth of today are lazy, good for nothing, degenerates? Well, you were pretty much right, and the generation after that is even worse.
Therefore I would ask you, please do not leave anything for the next generation to deal with, because they are likely to fuck it up or not deal with it at all.
Sincerely,
History

Nice!
This needs to be sent to every organisation everywhere ever.
Or at least put it in the news.
Or the memebomb database.

damn, it doesn't fit.
It needs to be shortened to fit in there.
