Black Rain (http://vimeo.com/3921306)
Black Rain is sourced from images collected by the twin satellite, solar mission, STEREO. Here we see the HI (Heliospheric Imager) visual data as it tracks interplanetary space for solar wind and CME's (coronal mass ejections) heading towards Earth. Data courtesy of courtesy of the Heliospheric Imager on the NASA STEREO mission.
Working with STEREO scientists, Semiconductor collected all the HI image data to date, revealing the journey of the satellites from their initial orientation, to their current tracing of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Solar wind, CME's, passing planets and comets orbiting the sun can be seen as background stars and the milky way pass by.
As in Semiconductors previous work 'Brilliant Noise' which looked into the sun, they work with raw scientific satellite data which has not yet been cleaned and processed for public consumption. By embracing the artefacts, calibration and phenomena of the capturing process we are reminded of the presence of the human observer who endeavors to extend our perceptions and knowledge through technological innovation.

Should have watched after smoking.
That was cool, kinda creepy sounding
Incredibly cool. I love stuff like this.
Shit, now I feel like I need some kind of...protection. From space's terrible secrets.
ETA: I am exceptionally creeped out.

It did make space seem kinda frightening (not that it isn't a little frightening already). It had a little bit of the old space movie feel. I expected theremin at any moment.

The vast frightening aspect of space has always been a reminder about the nature of the reality for me.
I get a sense of the horrible vastness of the universe when I look up on clear nights too, but the raw quality of that video really drives it home.
That stuff. The 'coronal mass ejections' I think they were called.
Those are fucked. They creeped me out more than the (slightly hokey I thought) camera tricks.
Outstanding stuff!

I see you didn't read the blurb that went with the video. Those weren't camera tricks:

The vid is frightening because it makes us feel like an alien in our own universe.
When I look up at the stars, I feel ENORMOUS. Better than feeling "horrible vastness".

No, I don't think you understood. By I don't need this shit, I meant that your words don't even arouse me (heh) to even care. It's funny. :lulz:
But I'm serious about the feeling big part. Science is good for providing connections like that.
Yeah, science as far as it's convenient for you to gratify your ego.

I hate to be the retard in the room, but I didn't really get anything at all out of that video. Maybe a sense of "huh... neat. I wonder how I'm supposed to be interpreting this?"

It's raw footage of various views of the inner solar system. It's supposed to feel eerie or something.

OK. I understood what it was; I was just thinking maybe there was more to it that I wasn't getting.

I think you're supposed to marvel at outer space, break out in song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk), and then get high off your own solar wind.
I also have this hard to describe experience of understanding without words that I also feel when I'm around autistic people and some noise music.
Damn. I just liked the fukin video.

It's probably some miswiring in my brain or something, but it feels profound.
Assuming Kai is done being a douchebag, would you mind elaborating on why you liked it?
So, were the sounds natural sounds generated by, uh, space noise or :?
I think they are radio waves converted into sound. Is that correct?
That's what I thought, but it doesn't say.
I'll just go ahead and assume.

Because it
is profound. It is incredible footage that shows something I never even knew existed.
I thought it was pretty cool, it just didn't kick off an emotional response and I figured I was missing something.

Dude, you're getting awfully close to sounding just like the way Lysergic used to sound. Don't do that.
Additionally, I agree with Net that it's pretty douchy to claim the way you feel when looking at the stars is somehow better than the way he feels when looking at the stars.
However, getting back on topic somewhat, I would be interested to hear how/why you feel enormous when looking at the stars? Seems very counterintuitive to me, with the stars being incredibly big and incredibly far away, and you, as a human, being incredibly tiny in comparison.
Or is it some kind of being contrary thing, like "hey universe, trying to make me feel tiny eh? well fuck that, I'm just going to feel enormous instead, hah!" ?
About the awesome video, I mostly got a feeling of pretty damn awesome from it. Not too specifically eerie, although it did really underline for me the fact that most of space is a pretty hostile environment, not good for life. The raw and unprocessed noisy video really made that point a lot clearer than I would ever get from the fake-colour processed shiny NASA gas cloud pictures that look like deep sea coral candy farts.

personally I was assuming it was just some kind of generative glitch ambient soundtrack. maybe partially based on radio waves, but if they didn't say they were, they probably aren't. if it were radio waves they'd have to be processed, unlike the video images, because raw radio waves would sound very different I think.
it sounds like the ambient glitches are composed or synced to the video images, either manually or by some generative video to audio process, but I don't think you're hearing just raw space probe data.
