It seems like some of the animated avatars are locking up my browser for several seconds at a time. Is it just Google Chrome? Is it my Mac Mini? I'll probably just turn avatars off but I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem, because I don't remember it happening until recently.
A lot of them jsut don't animate for me. No problem on the home comp. with Chrome, but I rarely use Chrome for forums due to how it handles cookies.
Knowing what I do now, Nigel, animated avatars may be a bit of a hazard for you, were I you, I'd just turn them off.
It doesnt seem to be a problem on Firefox, but my connection is, uh, monstrously good, so that may be the reason why.
Before I got this new laptop a couple of months ago, I'd have to turn off or scroll quickly by the animated avatars and siglines. It sucked. It slowed my computer down bigtime. Now with a newer computer, it's not so bad at all. I can't remember if the browser slowed down or got locked up recently, which doesn't mean it didn't happen, but if it does, it's not often at all, whereas it happened all the time before.
I have a new Sony Saio, though, not a Mac.
I thought LMNO's was making my browser slow down, but then I realised it was just an illusion because the animation is in slow motion.
Nigel, those avatars have just been drinking Powerthirst, and your comp is like "Sloooow dooown" and they're like "Fuck yuo!" and kick your comp in the face with their ENERGY MEGS.
yeah - starting today, only the top 30% of LMNO's animated avatar loads for me
(using Opera btw)
I'm also stealing it from another website, so that might be a reason, too.
I'll change it, if anyone wishes.
Frog Fellatio
The gifs really slow down my browser at work, but that's probably because I'm forced to use Internet Explorer 6. :argh!:
The work computers don't seem to like ECH's signature either. I have no idea why.
Never had a problem with Chrome. Then again my computer can fucking anything.
I can come up with one possibility:
My mac has trouble resizing gifs dynamically in webpages, if you are viewing the forum zoomed it can cause them to stop.
Otherwise I'm stumped.
They don't slow my comp down but sometimes the avatars just don't show up.
I use chrome and it mostly happens on my netbook. Sometimes the other one.
Negatory.
I am a part-time Opera spag, though.
I still don't know what the deal is, but at least some of you made me chuckle. :)
Sometimes pages won't really load and they just sit there, all white and blank. SO STRANGE.

Very very odd.
Does it come up "page not found"?
Do you get some of the page, for example the forum template but without any of the threads?
Does it stop loading or does it just keep loading forever?
probably unrelated, but I did notice that the new version of Opera (installed this morning) fixes layout problems on a number of websites
I use Firefox on a Toshiba laptop and have never had a problem regardless of what internet connection I'm stealing at the time.

I get the forum template but the thread itself doesn't load, or takes a long long time to load. It only happens with this forum, not with any others (well, I have a raft of problems with TCC, but I'm pretty sure that's just their shitty software).
What browser are you running? Maybe somehow theres an exception with the caching rules or something
*edit* Oh chrome I knew that! Just give a diff browser a whirl just for a quick test; Chrome hasn't really ever worked properly for me
I will try a switch!
Chrome, Vista, Dell Studio. I think very occasionally avatars don't show up, but I never know if that's because my laptop fucked up or if the person just didn't set an avatar so I just kinda ignore it.

That sounds to me lie the SQL queries are going really slow, understandable considering this forum has the most threads,
I would suggest checking how many threads you gave set to display in your settings, if it's a lot more then 50 that could cause problems. Otherwise, there is a prune coming which will increase Th speed of calls here

Sweet, I will check that. Thanks!
