WOW that is incredibly cool.

When they say "portable," how portable are we talking? Looks like you'd need a semi or a really big U-Haul to carry that thing around.

It's all styrofoam and plaster.  You could lift it with your off-hand.

Oh, the armor?  Aaah, probably just moulded plastic.  Amazing the metallic effects you can get with drybrushing.

Yeah, but it's still got volume, unless it's also inflatable.

It all breaks down and stores on-site at Cooper's in a trailer. 2 days to set up and half a day to break down. It's all in the forum thread.

Also: barrel and duct tape armor isn't allowed in the East Kingdom anymore. We're fucking snots and proud of it!

Period correctness is probably for the best, although for shields I wouldn't want to fight with anything but aluminum.  Sorry, I'm just not that buff.

I endorse this statement.

One of the things that turned me off to SCA was the hypocrisy of what was and wasn't period. DAMN YOU CAID!!!!

You can still make aluminum look period. Plastic barrels you can't.

I've seen it done with plastic. Barrel plastic even. Heck I used to have a copy of TI showing how this guy did it.

In other words...AN ATTEMPT AT MEDIEVAL ARMOR. Not carpet or barrels.

...Now if only they would attempt at real swords...

That would require the SCA to tighten their safety measures. That would mean that not every Tom, Dick and Hagrid could show up on the weekend, slap on their armor and play at being knights for a few hours. That would mean more marshals on the field. More injuries. Higher insurance for the Society.

I like a lot of people who are SCAdians. However, the majority of heavy fighters, are IMHO just barely above the average football jock from highschool. They just want to put on armor and beat the shit out other guys, while taking heavy blows so they can prove how manly they are, which is ironically how most knights were at friendly deeds of arms.

Blunt swords are still swords. Granted the SCA is more modeled after deeds of arms rather than war fighting or judicial dueling, which means lots of percussive blows with swords against guys in armor. Whcih is fine, if everyone wheres armor of the same general period, but they don't. The SCA stretches from what 600 to 1600, there is a lot of armor diversity in those thousand years.

And what of maces, hammers, and pollaxes? Those and other 'mass' weapons are designed to deliver heavy concussive blows through armor and batter it until the other guy's armor locks up on them.

On a list level sure, but in a war scenario? Way too much of a liability.

Not sure about Caid, but we have "cut and thrust" out here now. Essentially a bunch of people who rolled over between heavy and fencing, actually READ treatises, and went, "Well, fuck. Let's do it."

Percussive live steel, or at least using schlager blades. I want a scimitar.

'live' would imply sharp, but ya In Caid and An Tir they have C&T. I'm not big on most things teh SCA does. I hate rapier, which is the prereq for C&T in Caid. I'm more of a Silver man than Fabris or any of those other Italian guys. Also, C&T doesn't have wars, and caters to a small range of time for the SCA. I really can't se someone who wants to a Vandal playing C&T or rapier.
I also hate schlager blades. If you want to play rapier, get a rapier blade. If you want to play C&T get a heavy rapier blade or a broad/back sword blade, or a scimitar :P Schlagers behave so much differently from those. It's like doing rapier with a double wide epee.

But, I am more a Liechtenauer, and Le Jeu de La Hache man.

Not that I am any kind of sword nerd. Nope not me. Not in the slightest.

We do a LOT of German in my rapier academy, and Italian. I was going over Marrozzo on Monday and getting aggrivated.

1. That house is awesome, we go visit them every year (since they're just down the lake a bit)... Vlad has multiple houses and of course the big Italian Villa Casa Bardicci has a balcony, a chapel, a tavern and loads of awesomeness ;-)

2. Cut and Thrust is good stuff. Here in the Middle Kingdom its becoming quite prolific and covering the two handed longsword and now experimental halberds. However, Schlager blades aren't permitted in C&T here, you have to be using specific "cut and thrust" blades as approved by the KRM. Basically heavy practice blades ala MK Armory, Darkwood, Del Tin etc.

Personally, I've found Morazzo's unarmed combat as discussed in "Abrazare", far more exciting than C&T. Though C&T with a longsword is pretty awesome too, I like making the Heavy Fighters jealous ;-)

Ok, I'm better now. That is cool. Glad to see C&T expanding. I wish the local SCA heavy practice wasn't during the week, during my pre calc class. Seriously, why have a fighter practice during the week? Every other barony I have been in the heavies practiced on the weekends.
