Title: From the desk of Hawk
Post by: Adios on August 27, 2010, 06:09:00 PM
Doctors at a Sri Lankan hospital operated for three hours Friday to remove 18 nails and metal particles allegedly hammered into the arms, legs and forehead of a maid by her Saudi employer.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/08/27/sri.lanka.maid.assault/index.html?hpt=T2

This is an officially state recognized domestic worker program gone bad. Evidently there are wide spread reports of abuse.

NPR interviewed a few people regarding this and apparently this is not unheard of... though more popular are locking up the house employees, beating them, using hot irons on them, cigars/cigarettes to burn them or just good old fashioned rape (the guy they interviewed was particularly upset because the employers weren't wearing condoms when they did the raping...)

How inconsiderate of those rapists. They could have given their victims herpes, syphilis or even zygote.

Get Sarah Palin to speak! Only $75,000, uh, plus other considerations.

So just what does it take to get Sarah Palin to speak at your fundraising gala?

A "deluxe" hotel suite, a first class ticket or a private jet ("Lear 60 or larger"), pre-selected audience questions, and "bendable" straws – not to mention the $75,000 in cash.

That's according to Palin's speaking contract with Cal State Stanislaus – ordered to be released by a California judge this week after the state school refused to make the document public last June.

Glenn Beck

His Restoring Honor celebration in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., tomorrow has managed to draw protest from civil rights supporters, Christians and, of all people, members of the Tea Party. The Fox News host has been planning this event for months, yet Beck says divine intervention led to the booking of the gathering on August 28, the 47th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. That speech also took place in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

Civil rights advocates, including a Washington, D.C., City Council member and the Rev. Al Sharpton, are organizing counter-events to "Take the Dream Back," officials said. Meanwhile, a religious concert at the Kennedy Center organized by Beck, which will include former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, has drawn ire from Christian conservatives. Beck is a Mormon, part of a religion not considered by some evangelicals as true Christianity.

Finally, Tea Party advocates think that Beck is knocking the wind out of events they have scheduled for September. "I hope they have a wonderful time, but I just don't get why he's having this and why now," Andrew Ian Dodge, Maine coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, told NPR yesterday. He called the event "Beckapalooza."

Pirates are too smart!

A Somali man Friday became the second person convicted in the United States of acts related to high-seas piracy in more than a century, although he wasn't convicted of piracy itself.

Jama Idle Ibrahim pleaded guilty in a federal courtroom in Norfolk, Virginia, admitting he had intended to seize a U.S. merchant vessel on April 10 and hold it for ransom.

Ibrahim and five other would-be pirates learned too late that they had instead pulled alongside a U.S. Navy dock landing ship, the USS Ashland, and they were captured.

Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

Melbourne, Aug 26 (ANI): Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

I blame the fucking Mayans.

They claim satellites will be aged by 50 years, rendering GPS even more useless than ever, and the blast will have the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

"We know it is coming but we don't know how bad it is going to be," Fisher told Reneke.

"Systems will just not work. The flares change the magnetic field on the Earth and it's rapid, just like a lightning bolt. That's the solar effect," he added.

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- A volcano that had been inactive for more than 400 years erupted in Indonesia early Sunday, causing thousands of people to flee their homes, officials said.

Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province had been inactive since the 1600s, but spewed volcanic ash nearly a mile into the air Sunday, said Surono, head of the country's volcanology and geology agency.

Gonna be one helluva decade.

BERLIN —
Police say a man living in Germany was shot in the back of his head, but that it took him five years to realize it.

Police said Tuesday that the 35-year-old man was hit by a .22-caliber bullet in the western town of Herne as he was out in the street partying and drunk on New Year's Eve five years ago.

They say the man recalled receiving a blow to the head, but told them he didn't seek medical assistance at the time.

How it works: Virtusphere consists of a 10-foot hollow sphere, which is placed on a
special platform that allows the sphere to rotate freely in any direction according to
the user's steps. Wearing a wireless, head-mounted
display the user is able to walk and run being immersed into virtual environment.
The movement by the user is replicated within the virtual environment. The same
hardware set can be used for different applications by changing only the software
applications.

Smoke More, Drink Up! Russian Finance Minister Asks Russians to Help Solve Social Problems

Russia's finance minister Alexei Kudrin urged citizens Wednesday to smoke and drink more to help lift tax revenues for spending on social services.

"If you smoke a pack of cigarettes, that means you are giving more to help solve social problems such as boosting demographics, developing other social services and upholding birth rates," Kudrin said, quoted by the Interfax news agency.

"People should understand: Those who drink, those who smoke are doing more to help the state," he said.

The advice came as the Russian government announced plans to raise excise duty on alcohol and cigarettes.

Mutually beneficial. Your average Russian, who probably has an alcohol problem anyway, based on what some of my Russian immigrant friends have told me, now has governmental endorsement to indulge in their vice for the good of the state. The state gets a population too busy getting drunk to do anything they would disapprove of, other than your average shenanigans that give the police something to do and the doctors to treat. Plus, like they said, taxes.

A pair of illegal immigration ordinances in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, were ruled unconstitutional Thursday by a federal appeals court.

In 2006, Hazleton passed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act Ordinance, which would have fined landlords who rented to undocumented immigrants and would have penalized companies that employed them.

Under another law, tenants would have had to prove they were citizens or lawful residents, register with the city and pay for a rental permit in order to receive an occupancy permit.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/09/pennsylvania.immigration.case/index.html?hpt=T2

The city has declared they will take this all the way to the Supreme Court. Like they would even sit on this.
