I recently learned that in some jurisdictions, jury duty calls are selected by voting frequency.
Yet another excellent reason not to vote.
Jury duty is interesting.
did not know that. probably a good way to get civic minded people into juries though.
And lots of teabaggers. :lulz:
I have yet to sit on a jury, and I've been voting consistently for 19 years.
They call me a lot, but I have yet to serve.
Kind of disappointing really... I hear in long cases you get free lunch.
That's true here, too, TI.

"some jurisdictions".
Sounds like you need to move to a better one!

Totally makes up for all those days of lost work!
Actually I get tapped for jury duty with some frequency, but I'm a single mother for whom it would be ruinous to miss that much work, so I never have to go.
I would totally get into it too...
During the first testimony... "Sorry Judge, ahhh when are we having lunch?"
"Before we go on we should really take lunch."
"You Know what would go good with this testimony... lunch"
"BUT WE ALREADY HAD LUNCH!!!"
:argh!:
I was laughed out of a courtroom when I could have been a juror for a case of alleged public indecency, "having sexual intercourse in public."
It was one of those situations where you just can't maintain your composure any more and laughter leaks out in an abrupt contagion.
Even when I was being completely serious people laughed after that. Except for the wicked hot defendant who looked like she wanted to shoot me in the face.
That was way more fun than the case they ended up selecting me for.

I've moved...oh...5-6 times since I first started voting. I think it might just be a combination of 1) moving around TOO much (they can't catch up to me) and 2) having small children at home. CA lets you be excused for that.

If you're getting tapped & excused, you're still getting tapped. Also, again, "some".

I think it's happened ONCE for San Diego County and ONCE for LA County...been in SDC for 11 years. I'm not aware if they have a list of moms who cry "little kid" or not, though.
And I wouldn't consider getting tapped for jury duty twice in 19 years an excuse to not vote, or a reason to not vote. But then I have a different opinion on voting, anyway. /well known statement is old and well known...
I'm actually SICK enough to WANT to sit on a jury, it's just never worked out.

I don't mind jury duty. Everyone deserves a fair trial, and if you aren't willing to sit on a jury and actually consider the facts, who will? Oh, yeah. Some teabagger.
However, you are self-employed, and jury pay just doesn't make the nut. Most judges will release you based on that, as far as I've seen.
Oh, it's not the ONLY reason to not vote, or even the MAIN reason to not vote. It's just a side bonus... means I wouldn't have to deal with the paperwork, right?
No, the main, and in my case only, reason not to vote is so I can post on Facebook that I didn't vote, thereby pissing off 700+ fervent voting evangelists.
Paperwork in voting?
Just out of curiosity how does the voting work in US. I mean when you go to the voting office do you just give them ID then go to a little booth with a ballet and pencil, check the party you want then put it in the little box and leave, or is it more elaborate then that?

No.
Paperwork in petitioning to be relieved of jury duty, should you get tapped for it. You get three "free passes", and after that you have to petition.
I suspect I will never have to do jury duty because
a) I'm on a government watchlist, or was
b) while at secondary school, I took part in mock trials, where our team made it to the national level, and so the Sheriff knows my name and that I know a little too much about the court system for any judge to be comfortable
c) the government, both past and present, have a long-standing hatred of trial by peer, and want magistrates to do everything.
All of which is fine by me, except for the being spied on and hatred of trial by your peers part.

I'd vote, and then tell them I didn't.
But I have an incredible range of fruitcakes to choose from, and the notion that I might be the deciding vote on ensuring the screwiest person gets into office makes me really, really want to vote.

That's usually my M.O., too... or someone I know is running, so I vote for them. My friend is my state rep now.
I am more likely to vote on ballot measures than people. Half the time, they're all a bunch of stupid, useless fucks, and I don't care.
The putative lawyers on the lawyer forum are still arguing about how juries are selected in various jurisdictions. :lulz: According to the most credible poster so far, in most states they pull the jury duty roster from both the voting and driver's license databases.
Interesting on so many levels! They obviously don't rely on DMV records in Oregon, as I didn't get a license until I was 28 but was tapped for jury duty a number of times before then.
